Chapter 2: Ezranās Dilemma Part 6!
Part 5 !
And ofc, stay tuned for part 7!
Some things I wanted to point out after looking at the pc character sheets. Some of them have a few features they havenāt used yet and that Iām curious about.
I noticed HJ has Ugly level 1 which isnāt that important but I just thought was funny. Like heās not even ugly, Ik itās just a feature but damn, whyād they do him like that. š More importantly, I noticed he had prey exclusion, which, I might be wrong, but we havenāt seen him have any difficulty with only being able to prey on a certain type of person. Weāve only seen him seek out his preferred type.
Speaking of Prey exclusion, Madelaine does not have this feature for some reason, despite the fact that sheās clearly inflicted by it. We know she can only prey on people of status. I figure itās probably just because we donāt have access to their entire character sheets because I donāt see āPreferred Preyā listed on either HJ or Madelaineās lists. I also noticed she has level 1 āCheck the Trunk,ā a feature we havenāt seen her use yet. This skill means she had an easy access to armory so if itās convenient, she could just whip a tool out for something. Less surprisingly, Darkness Man also has this but at Level 2.
Last thing I noticed is that she has a flaw called āStigmata,ā which means at hunger level 4 sheāll begin to bleed out of her hands, feet and forehead. This will probably become important soon considering the fact that Madelaine hasnāt fed since like episode fucking 1. Sheās consistently been rolling really well on hunger so sheās only been on hunger level 2 for the past several episodes. I know Siobhan was curious about whether or not she could feed off the Whittakers or Douglasses but I donāt think weāve seen her try yet. Either way, I wonder how thatās gonna play out.
Couple things I noticed abt LaVonte is that heās Stake Bait. RIP! Stake bait means that they have final death if theyāre staked in the heart. I think itās caused by some sort of curse or blood defect. I wonder how he got it š¤. Heās the only one in the lineup who has this flaw. (I read that itās kind of a dumb flaw cuz it just instakills your PC but I want to assume itās related to his backstory and that itās included for an actual reason.)
There are a few features he has that Iām actually unclear on what their purposes are. He has level 2 minor boon but Iām not sure what that means, even when looking it up. It seems like he can call in a favor if he needs it? Which heās utilized a bit. He also has eat food! Helps with blending in with humanity although I donāt think heās ever actually done it on screen. He also has prey exclusion which again, we havenāt seen that come up but maybe I missed something.
Honestly, I think Zac has utilized a lot of Zaethās advantages with one blaring exception: Fame. Meaning at some point, Zaeth was famous among mortals, so people might recognize him. He actually also has āzeroedā which is probably a foil to fame. Zeroed is an advantage where all record of his existence has been wiped so heās off the grid. I imagine his sire wouldāve done that for his safety so it makes sense. I think those two things present some interesting backstory. Maybe he was famous in his mortal life and when he was turned, he couldnāt be that person anymore so his sire had to get him off the grid. (He also has illiterate level 2, lmaooo checks out.)
Both Vesper and Darkness Man have been employing the largest amount of their skills and have been affected by their disadvantages the most. Really milking every single part of their character sheets. Also HJ has one more dot in dominance than LaVonteā¦. do with that what you will.
Edit: I was informed that HJ and LaVonte have prey exclusion cuz theyāre consentualists! They need to ask permission to drink someoneās blood so ignore that part of this post lmaooo (thank u comments!)

City Council of Darkness, Episode 7: A Co-op and a Caretaker
Just two platonic business partners.
D20 Masterpost || Ep 6 || Ep 7
Iāve been thinking about episode 7 of City Council of Darkness and about Lavonte reacting the way he did to Maya assuming he and HJ were a couple.
Lavonte and HJ represent exact tropes of homosexuality and vampirism of the 1980s; by the 80s, vampires had shifted from countryside landed gentry hiding away in musty castles to urbanised capitalists - the setting changes, but they still benefit from the toil of others as the bourgeoisie against the proletariat (Morrissette, 2013). At the same time, people moving to cities during the industrial revolution to work formed proletariat communities of their own, including homosexuals that left their homes in search of a better life; the city was different than their small-knit towns where everyone knew everyone, and gave them freedom. By the 80s HIV/AIDs crisis, horror had synthesised vampires and homosexuality to be intertwined urban concepts; for members of these groups (homosexuals/vampires), there is an element of hunting or pursuing a partner (cruising/finding a victim), exchanging fluids (cum/blood), and those fluids put you at risk of sickness or death (AIDs/vampirism) (Clark, 2022). There is, further, the idea of āturning someoneā - this is framed as a bad thing by out-members, but contains nuance within the community. They are both seductive. They are both abnormal. You should warn your children about (homosexuals/vampires), do not let your daughter move to the city, or she will become a (homosexual/vampire). Within horror, vampires began to be queer coded; Daughters of Darkness (1971), The Hunger (1983), Fright Night (1985), The Lost Boys (1987).
HJ is the exemplar of the 80s vampire - he is a businessman with immense power, he is slick, he is clean shaven and well dressed, he is a confirmed bachelor. He is coded as (homosexual/vampire), and itās interesting to think about whether Lavonte pursued HJ because he was a vampire, or because HJ was a man. It is risky for either of those factors to be what makes him appealing, but the desire alongside the disorder is what makes it a (homosexual/vampire) love story - it would be horrifying to want someone while also being terrified of what they can do to you. It completely makes sense to me that Lavonte, even though Lou played it as a joke, would have reservations about people thinking he was gay. Being gay in the 80s meant being dirty, meant being sick, meant being less masculine or respected, meant being the āother,ā regardless of if heās gay or not (Clark, 2022). Even though I see Lavonte as being totally accepting, being gay himself would be an admission of guilt in some way. Lavonte is focused, charismatic, and doesnāt like hearing ānoā - if someone implied he seduced HJ to gain vampirism, I think that would be his nightmare.
Truly, even though none of their 80s-gay-vampirism coding was intentional, and even though Lou and Ally were playing up the miscommunication as a joke, I think it's interesting to see how character moments make logical sense within meta-horror. Itās been a great season so far.

Riz in college. He has a full scholarship but he works part time at the campus coffee place in order to get extra spending money for adventuring supplies.
He works the super early 4am-8am shift and handles the morning rush like a pro. Once he's there a couple days he's worked out all his regulars routines and will have their coffee ready to order before they get to the counter.
Onces he's been at college a few months he 'quits' since he had his PI stuff bringing in money.
His manager will still call him up sometimes and he'll cover shifts when people are sick.
He does the overnight shift the two weeks before finals when the Cafe is 24/7. Helps people with their studying if it's quiet, always leaves the place immaculate for the morning shift.
Noone who's in his classes realises he's the Barrister goblin because the uniform is a polo shirt, apron and cap. With the tattoos he looks like a typical hipster but he goes to classes in his normal clothes.
His rogue teachers give him extra credit for disguise work not realising its not on purpose.
If you order something that's more syrup than coffee he judges you HARD because that's just a hot milkshake.
