This is Herdsan, my son’s third-level fighter in our Basic Fantasy RPG (he calls D&D) game. He only started playing this week. Excited to play with him some more. The dog’s name is Billy. The Chimera for Chris Gonnerman’s Iron Falcon RPG Handbook of Monsters. I started this around mid March but due to an eventful and tough month, I only went back to it tonight and finished it. This month had taken the wind out of my sails. I’ve become less enthused with drawing, amongst other things. I still want to draw though so I’ll continue to post drawings. But maybe less frequently. Also, I’ll probably be doing drawings that are easier/quicker to execute. The devil-horned dire cat, version 2, coloured. I wasn’t satisfied with how I drew Aaron Kato (I made his proportions more consistent with my other drawing of him) and the way I shaded the drawing in version 1. So I coloured it again using a limited palette in a more cel animation style. I feel like I’ve been relying too much on references and measuring lately. I want to get back to just freely drawing what’s in my head. So for this sketch, I drew the Museum Caretakers characters in different poses that didn’t rely on references. I also resisted the urge to double check the perspective and just completely eyeballed it. I might end up using it in the Tiny Trove supplement I’m working on for Gallant Knight Game’s Tiny Wastelands. I’ll just have to ink it. A necromancer employs the aid of zombies in this piece for the Handbook of Monsters for Iron Falcon RPG. I’ve spent about 10 hours on this piece, including the zombie studies I did to figure out my preferred way of rendering a zombie as a black and white drawing, how to show the moon without black-filling the sky, how to draw the open graves and so on. I’m happy with how it turned out on the end. I needed a powerful magic-user character that will summon zombies for a piece I’m doing. To do something that’s different from the obvious western fantasy wizard or sorcerer, I wanted a magic-user that looks like a learned scholar from the east. For inspiration, I looked to Lord Mu’tamin of Zaragoza as depicted in the 1961 movie El Cid. I’ve always liked that character.
