Unpopular black opinion

I feel like this “Oscars Boycott” movement is stupid. Will Smith does not deserve a best actor nomination period point blank. An argument can be made for Idris Elba, but in all honesty the category really has some stiff competition this year. I’m all for black artists being recognized for their work. But at the end of the day, it needs to be completely based on merit. And this year, at least, there were no standout performances by black actors that warrant this type of reaction.

I think the bigger issue is opportunity. Black actors aren’t given much opportunity to star in films, much less Oscar-bait films. It’s the same problem Viola Davis brought up in her Emmy speech. THAT is where the focus should be, not the Oscars. Obviously there are some biases that occur when a lot of old white men are deciding which films/actors are noteworthy, but at the end of the day, you can’t necessarily blame one award show because all the top award nominations happened to be given to whites. That’s not reflective of the Oscars, but the industry in general.

And this boycott will do nothing more than delegitimize the real issues of lacking diversity in the industry and make life more difficult for black actors in the future.

I wish people would realize it’s the people MAKING the movies that aren’t CASTING people of color...not directly the Academy’s fault there is (unfortunately and infuriatingly) no diversity in quality features. Beasts of No Nation is probably the only one people are using as an example that could potentially be Oscar-worthy...but I don’t know what the qualifications for eligible movies are, being that it was a Netflix original and all...Yes, the Academy is grossly composed of mostly white people, as is the film industry, and therein lies the issue of opportunity
