Sawyer couldn’t help but let out a laugh, a real one that rumbled from deep inside her, the kind only Gabe could ever coax out of her. “If you ever thought for a single second I’d say no, then maybe you don’t know me as well as I thought you did," Yet, even as she spoke, a grin tugged at the corner of her lips, betraying the words she’d just spoken. “But I suppose I can't hold that against you, considering how goddamn much you mean to me,” she added, her voice softening just enough to show she meant it.
Her eyes flicked to the box in his hand, and with a slow, deliberate nod, she extended her left hand toward him, waiting for him to slip the ring onto her finger. She held her breath, watching him closely, as if the slightest wrong move could shatter everything they had built. As he finished sliding the ring onto her finger, she lifted her hand to admire it. It was perfect in every way, though she knew he could’ve handed her a piece of plastic, and she’d have cherished it just the same. Her smile grew wider, a wild glint in her eyes, as she pulled Gabe in for another kiss, still riding the dazed high from moments before. Finally pulling back, she glanced at him with a mischievous grin. "Think the horse stalls are free?"
Gabe grinned wide as the sound of her laughter reached his ears. A lifelong musician, he’d always been drawn to sound and its ability to quite literally shake one’s soul, but after knowing Sawyer, he’d soon realized that he could live a thousand lifetimes and never hear a sound that both steadied him and excited him like her laugh did. It was like in that half of a heartbeat, his entire world was alright and nothing outside of that moment even mattered. He’d always known Sawyer Decker was the one for him– the first time he’d heard that laugh, he’d felt all the same butterflies, and the security. There’d never been a doubt, and now the universe had finally decided that it was their time. “Listen, I learned a long time ago not to ever get too confident, alright? It’s good to stay humble,” Gabe chuckled, finally feeling himself relax a little as his hands slowly stopped shaking. “Guess this means you’re stuck with me now,” he teased, flashing a wink at her.
Taking the ring out the box, he slowly slipped it onto her finger, all the while holding his breath in fear that he’d completely fucked up the size. But once it settled even more perfectly than he could’ve imagined, he finally took a breath. “Wow,” he murmured, his smile widening as he admired the ring in its rightful spot, “Even better than I imagined.” Following her pull, he leaned down, catching her lips in another dizzying kiss. Laughing as he eased back, Gabe scooped her up into his arms, bridal style, waggling his brows at her as he started towards the horse stalls, “Only one way to find out.”
( END. )
As she let her hands settle in his, Sawyer couldn't help but arch a brow, the faintest hint of confusion crossing her face. She stayed quiet, though—selfishly savoring the moment, not wanting to break this happiness that had seemingly settled over the two of them. After the chaos the last few momths had brough them, this was a rare break in the insanity - even if it were momentary. "Normal?" she echoed, a scoff escaping her lips. "Baby, there’s nothing normal about me. I’m a goddamn wildfire wrapped in a hurricane with a dash of hell." A real laugh broke free, the kind only Gabe could pull from her—raw, unguarded, and full of life. Sawyer's grin sharpened, her eyes narrowing with that familiar spark of challenge. She stepped closer, her voice teasing as she edged him on, "Oh, you were, huh?" For a brief moment, a flicker of nervousness washed over her, but it quickly dissolved into a smile she couldn’t hold back as he continued speaking. It wasn’t until she saw him drop to one knee that Sawyer finally grasped what was happening. Her blue eyes caught sight of the small box in his hand, and in that instant, all her emotions swelled up inside her. Warmth gathered at the corners of her lashes, and before she knew it, tears—happy tears—began to slide down her cheeks.
Sawyer finally exhaled, her gaze locked on him. "Gabriel, you dumb, beautiful, man," she murmured with a faint chuckle, her voice thick with the tension of emotions held too long in check. Her eyes were aflame, but beneath that fire was something rare—vulnerability. She stepped closer, her hand pressing against his chest, feeling the strong, steady rhythm of his heart. With a gentle firmness, she helped him back to his feet. "Gabe, you’ve always been my constant," she confessed, her tone rough yet tender. "The one thing that made sense in a world that never did. I’m not easy to love—hell, I’m a goddamn nightmare—but you... you’re the calm in my storm. You don’t just see me, Gabriel. You see every broken, jagged piece of me, and still, you love me like it’s the easiest thing in the world."
She paused, her voice softening to a near whisper as she continued. "I don’t know how to be anyone’s wife. I don’t know how to be anyone’s anything. But I know how to be yours. I know how to fight for you, protect you, love you—in the only way I know how—fiercely and without apology." A small, bittersweet laugh escaped her as she wiped away a stray tear with the back of her hand. Sawyer leaned in closer, her lips grazing his as she wrapped her arms around his neck, her embrace both a promise and a challenge.
"Yes," she whispered with a nod, a grin tugging at the corner of her lips. "Yes, Gabriel Knox, I’ll marry you." Her voice carried the weight of a vow. "And when that day comes that I outlive you, I’ll spend the rest of my days raising hell in your name, until we’re fianlly together again."
“Normal is a relative term,” he reminded her, lips curving into a soft smile because what might not have been normal for anyone else, was pretty damn perfect according to him. He knew how fierce Sawyer was, how strong and independent she’d always been. It was too much for some men, but some men weren’t Gabe Knox. Unlike them, Gabe had been in love with her since he was a teenager; he’d always known what Sawyer needed in a partner because he truly saw her. He knew her. He might not have had as much to offer to Sawyer, but his love and adoration for her was as authentic as it came and always would be. To him, that was worth its weight in gold and he’d spend the rest of his days breathing life into that belief. Because she was worth it– she’d always been worth it. However, for how fearless she’d always been, he’d never deny how cute it was to witness the surprise on her face the moment he dropped to one knee. It was a rare moment of vulnerability that he felt lucky that he got to see. He knew Sawyer didn’t let hardly anyone in, and so to get to see her this way? It was both an honor and a privilege.Â
Dumb and beautiful– he’d been called at least one of those things before…he wasn’t about to readily admit which one. Feeling her hand on his chest, and then that tug to bring him to his feet, Gabe frowned, a rush of nerves bounding through him. At first glance, this didn’t feel like a yes. She brought him upright– that…that was a bad sign, wasn’t it? Swallowing hard, he tried to mask the way his mind was reeling but the wrinkle of his brow said enough for him. She was saying all the right things, but she’d brought him to his feet– he couldn’t get over how that one move just felt like a resounding no. Call him a tightly bound ball of confliction, to say the least.Â
He held his tongue, knowing if he interjected, it’d make whatever rejection this was even worse. So he just let her talk, and the more she did, the more confused he became. Her words were so beautiful…so how were they gonna go hand-in-hand with a no? Fuck, his head hurt. Loving her was the easiest thing in the world, despite their differences. He did see her. He knew she’d protect him, and love him. So why had she brought him to his feet?
Yes.
Oh. “You could’ve started with that,” Gabe finally breathed, raising a hand to card it though his hair. By now, he figured his face was as pale as it’d ever been, even in the moonlight. Scrubbing a hand across his mouth, he shook his head, “Jesus Christ, I thought you were saying no.” He wanted to puke– was it acceptable to puke? “I’m counting on that,” he continued with a soft smile, feeling the corners of his eyes begin to heat up with tears that were threatening to fall, “Good thing all we’ve got is time.” And as long as they were here– together– Gabe was going to make the most of it. Prying the ring from the small box in his hand, he held it up, then reached for her left hand, “May I?”
Smile was flashed in response to him doing well. "Glad to hear it." Working hard to pay attention so that he wouldn't need to repeat himself, the blonde nodded along as the glasses were laid out in front of her. For once managing to focus rather than get distracted by everything that was going on around her. It seemed straightforward enough and even with her limited knowledge of beers the logic made sense. "Keeping it simple for me, thanks." Words are dry and filled with light self deprecation, smile on her face to show that it's all in jest. "I'm not usually one for playing it safe but on this occasion I'm going to bow to your superior wisdom." Picking up the lightest one she took a tentative sip and then a slightly bigger one when she realised that she liked it. Compliment had been about to leave her lips but instead her attention was caught by Gabe's story, eyes widening along with her smile. "You brewed it for her? Talk about manifesting. What a gesture too - romance really isn't dead. I'm a sucker for a good love story so it's automatically jumped to my favourite now." She laughed as she picked up the second glass, taking a drink before she nodded appreciatively. "And you know what, I was right. This one's even better than the first." Gaze shifted to the bottle in his hand, laughter bubbling up again at the sight of the artwork. "Theo?" She hummed briefly as she considered the name though she was fairly certain he'd be someone memorable from the name of the beer alone. "I don't think I've had the pleasure but he's jumping to the top of my 'need to meet' list from that love of goats alone."
Gabe chuckled softly, “I do what I can,” he said in response to him keeping the tasting simple for her. Lifting a brow, he glossed over the bit about his superior wisdom, choosing to latch onto how he felt like Fliss might be indicating that she was a bit more of a thrillseeker than he’d originally perceived her to be, “That right? You a bit of a daredevil then?” He asked, just keeping the conversation going, but to also learn a bit more about her. Nodding, he couldn’t help the sheepish grin that formed at the corner of his mouth, “Yeah– what can I say, I’m a hopeless romantic at heart.” At least that’s how he felt when it came to Sawyer– how he’d always felt, really. “It’s definitely a fan favorite,” he continued, happy that Sapphire Blonde was so difficult to keep in stock– it meant business was good, and it meant he’d made something special in honor of someone who was definitely worth that level of hype, and more. “He’s a good time,” Gabe began again, shifting towards the topic of his brother. “He bartends here most nights so I’m sure you’ll run into him eventually. He actually has a goat,” he rambled, finding it easy to settle into the flow of most conversations, “Bert. You might get to meet him one day too.”
I’m beginning to recognize that real happiness isn’t something large and looming on the horizon ahead but something small, numerous and already here. The smile of someone you love. A decent breakfast. The warm sunset. Your little everyday joys all lined up in a row.

Theo let the phone hang by his ear as he rested his head on his arm, propped up on the wall.
Theo: Fuck. He cursed under his breath into his phone as he tried to gather his thought. Theo: Okay, Okay. Pausing for a moment, he lets out a strained sigh. Theo: Bro, i'm really fuckin' sorry. I don't even know how this shit happen. Can you just - Can you just not tell momma right now? I don't want her to stress out over this shit, okay?
Hearing Theo's anguish ring clearly through the receiver, Gabe paused, stopping himself from diving in with questions that he figured his brother was likely too frazzled to answer anyway. Gabe: Hey, listen...listen-- don't apologize, alright? We're gonna sort this out. And I'm not gonna tell Mom. She doesn't need to know until we figure out exactly what we're dealing with.
Crowds had never bothered her, but she couldn't deny she was thankful to escape to the outer rim of the grounds. It was a moment to think, a moment to breathe. "You're right," she chirped with a sly grin. "Fucking in a horse stall would be much classier." Moments like these made her realize how much she loved being with Gabe. Hand in hand, just the two of them. These rare moments were her favorite escape from their chaotic lives.
"Rough place to want to pick at," she teased, her tone light and full of jest. She followed him into the ring, brow furrowed slightly in confusion. "Last time we were here," she echoed his words, letting his question process. Memories flickered through her mind, and a faint smile tugged at her lips. "I thought I had it all figured out. I was young, wild, and reckless, thinking the world was mine for the taking," she began, her voice a mix of nostalgia and resignation, eyes briefly flickering to the ground. "But if someone had asked me back then where I'd be twenty years later, I wouldn't have pictured this. Not the scars, not the pain, not the losses." Things they both knew all too well.
As she paused, her gaze met Gabe's, and for a moment, the walls she'd built around herself seemed to crumble. "But I never imagined I'd find my way back to the man who kept a piece of my heart after I left," she continued, her smile widening. "Or the life I built with him. Or that he would stand by me through it all, despite how broken I was." She reached for his hand, squeezing it tightly. "So, no, this isn't what I would've pictured. But it's exactly where I was supposed to end up."
Gabe couldn’t help but snort aloud, having never imagined Sawyer placing fucking in a horse stall and classy in the same sentence. It served as a reminder of how different they were, but also, how aligned they were in all the ways that mattered. The world around them was chaotic at best, but the two of them always found a way to make their own peace in the thick of it, and that was a trend Gabe wanted to continue for the rest of his life. More than that, he wanted to seal it– set it in stone the only way he knew how. The mere thought of posing that question had his free hand involuntarily trembling at his side, and so he stuffed it into the pocket of his jeans, refusing to shine a light on his nerves. But as they walked and talked, he felt less and less afraid– talking to Sawyer had always had a way of doing that, of settling his nerves before he even realized that they needed settling. “Touché,” he chuckled, pausing long enough to undo the chain currently keeping the ring closed off. It was a rough place to want to pick at, but Gabe felt as though it was necessary to go there. Turning around so that he was walking backwards, he took both of Sawyer’s hands in his then and guided her to the middle of the ring, nodding all the while as she spoke. “So, you’re normal,” he deduced, because he figured the vast majority of people at that age were wild and reckless, and thought they had the world by the shorthairs. It was only until life disagreed sooner or later that all of those plans tended to go ass up. No one ever pictured that. But as Sawyer continued and Gabe slowed them to a stop, he couldn’t help but smile as he leaned into every word she spoke. It was all the reassurance he’d ever needed, right there and then. “Was kinda hoping you’d say that,” he nodded, chuckling softly as he caught his bottom lip between his teeth for a moment. “Feel the same way, honestly. When you left, you took a part of me too,” Gabe continued, briefly thinking back to his younger self and how distraught he’d been. Back then, he’d been convinced that was the end, that they’d never find their way back to each other, and yet…here they were. “I looked for you in everyone I met, and when you came back? It just…it felt like some sort of sign, you know? That this was our chance to get it right.” And they had gotten it right, as far as he could tell. “I knew you were the one when I was eighteen, Sawyer. That’s never changed.” Despite the way they’d both built lives independent of one another, they’d still fallen back together, and that was all the proof Gabe needed to know that she was his person. “Things look a little different than they did back then though. I’ve got kids– kids you’ve embraced as though they were your own, kids that love you. I’ve got demons that you don’t even bat an eye at.” He paused then, head shaking softly as a gentle chuckle eased out of him, mostly because he was just in awe of the life they’d been steadily building together, “You’re it, Sawyer– always have been, and my only hope is that I can make your life half as good as you’ve made mine.” Smiling softly, he reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small velvet coated box, “I just hope that you outlive me because I don’t ever want to spend another day without you.” Blowing out a breath, Gabe dropped down to one knee (casually ignoring the way one of his hips popped as he did so) and flipped the little box open, revealing a ring, “Will you marry me?”
Hearing Gabe’s voice had Theo breathing out a sigh of relief.
Theo: Sup, brother?
He chuckled, though there wasn’t much amusement behind it. He paused for a second, before blowing out a strained sigh.
Theo: Gabe, i fucked up. I fucked up big time - like really fucking big. I dunno if they’re gonna post my bail, hell, i dunno if they’re gonna even let me evenmake bail. I had one call man, and I could only remember your number. I’m kinda loosin’ it here, and i dunno what to do.
Gabe narrowly resisted the urge to scoff into the phone at Theo's greeting, but managed and stayed quiet, giving his younger brother a chance to clarify what he meant. Gabe: What do you mean? Actually, wait-- don't answer that. I'm-- He paused, glancing down at the drink in his hand and realizing he wasn't in any state to go to the police station, but he was already leaping up and gathering his wallet and keys with an audible clatter. Gabe: I'm on the way, okay? Don't worry-- I'm sure Sawyer's on her way too. We'll figure this shit out.

Ring, ring A sigh-- And then he presses one. Gabe: Theo? Hey, are you alright? What's goin' on?
Everything was always so light and easy with Gabe, despite the rough patch they had seemingly hit in the last few months. However, Sawyer was grateful for the break—a long enough pause that she could just be with Gabriel and have nothing else on her mind but him. Her brow arched at his question, and her smirk widened. "Okay," she nodded, reaching out to take his arm. "But if you're thinking about a quick fuck in one of those goddamn portapotties, forget it. I'll do a lot of things, but stepping near one of those in the middle of July at a fucking summer music festival isn’t one of them." Her tone was light, but the edge in her voice told him she wasn’t joking. "If not, then lead the way."
Tonight was a welcomed change to how tense he’d felt in recent weeks. Tense wasn’t Gabe’s default– he’d always been so happy go lucky, and so needless to say, the way he’d been as of late wasn’t something he wanted to make a habit out of because if he could sense how much it was affecting him, he could only guess at how it was bleeding over onto those closest to him. So tonight was about trying to let all of that go and pave a path to the future. Snorting a laugh, Gabe shot a pursed lip look over at her, “Oh come on– I’ve got some class– if anything, it’d be in an empty horse stall,” he teased, though in all seriousness, he wasn’t steering her away from the crowd for that. “Nah, just wanted to take a walk with you, pick your brain for a minute or two.” Steering her away from the mass of people clustered all about, he started towards the actual rodeo ring, a spot where he’d spent so much of his youth. He’d always felt the most comfortable here, even more so than Mad Dog, despite how the brewery truly was his pride and joy. But this…rodeo? It might as well have been his entire soul back then. Glancing over at her as they approached one of the empty rings on the outer rim of the grounds, Gabe took off his hat and stashed it on one of the posts, “Last time we were here,” meaning when they'd been far younger, “if someone would've asked you what your life would look like twenty years later, is this what you would've pictured?” Of course, he meant everything, but where he was really going with the question was pertaining specifically to the two of them.

The blonde couldn’t hold back her laughter as she watched him shimmy over, handing her a beer. She took it, raising it to her lips for a sip, her grin widening when he mentioned he was actually having fun. “Well, I’m sweating my ass off in the middle of the desert at a music festival in July, but,” her blue eyes scanned the crowd before landing back on Gabe, her smile returning. “I am actually having fun.” She was surprised she’d let him talk her into coming, and even more surprised that she was glad she did. “I know. Shocker. Alert the media,” she said sarcastically with a smirk. Her nose scrunched at the mention of the smell. “Think I might prefer horse shit smell this time. Though, the weed’s kind of masking the BO smell. Unless you get too close to Cheddar Bob over there,” she said, pointing to the sweaty man devouring chili cheese fries in front of them.
Grinning wide at Sawyer’s response, he gestured at her with a grand sweep of his arm, “Yeah, but you look gorgeous doing it,” sweating her ass off, that was. Really, he wondered how she did it. In a sea of sweaty bodies and frizzy hair, Sawyer still looked flawless. The same hand he’d used to motion at her came to smack against his chest in mock surprise as a gasp blasted past his lips, “You…are having…fun?” He teased, clearly just messing with her. He knew Sawyer could party harder than just about anyone he knew, but he could understand why this in particular might not have been fun for her. But to hear that it was? It just made him even happier that she’d agreed to go– for multiple reasons. Glancing over at Cheddar Bob, Gabe cringed, features pinching into a tight grimace, “That’s what that smell is? Thought it was just old cheese.” Spine shivering, he turned his attention back to Sawyer, unable to help but feel so much lighter than he had as of late, and he knew it had everything to do with the atmosphere buzzing all around, and with her. “Well, if you can stand the horse shit for just a bit, I was wonderin’ if you’d take a walk with me?”

The sight of Gabe swaying to the music in the crowd brought a laugh to her lips as she approached him. "Woah, cool it, cowboy," she smirked, grabbing her beer from him—the one she’d asked him to keep an eye on while she went to get them corndogs. Not that she had any real appetite for the food; it just seemed the simplest option. "If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were having fun," she teased, giving him a playful look before taking a sip from her bottle.
When it came to dancing, Gabe had never been too skilled at it; he'd always been far too awkward, but there wasn't a part of him that cared how he might look while he swayed to the beat. He was enjoying himself, focusing solely on the moment and letting himself slip back into that happy-go-lucky state he'd always been known for. Meeting Sawyer's laugh with a wide grin, he shimmied in her direction just to drive home the point that this cowboy didn't know how to cool it-- can't stop, won't stop. Handing over her beer with a nod, Gabe darted a look around, his smile only growing, "I am having fun," he agreed, happy that they'd decided to come despite having a few reservations early on. "I'm glad we did this," he continued, raising his drink to his lips, "What about you? You enjoying yourself? It's not like you can really smell the horse shit over here," he pointed out with a shrug, "Just...really ripe BO and weed." He wasn't sure that was an even trade, but beggars couldn't be choosers.

Theo couldn't help the confused look that spread across his face. He turned back around and glanced up at his brother. "What am I doing again?" he asked, blinking as he struggled to recall the instructions given to him. Before Gabe could answer, Theo's memory kicked in, and he waved his brother off. "Wait, never mind," he mumbled, grabbing the box and moving toward the cooler. "I'm surprised you're even here tonight, bro. Where's your girl?"
Gabe always loved attending events like this, but he especially love staying busy manning a Mad Dog stand and introducing others to the brews he and his team had poured so much lifeblood into over the years. It meant even more to him with Theo being part of the team, really and truly making it a family business. Snorting a laugh at his question, Gabe just gave him a moment, figuring his instructions would come back soon enough, and when they did, Gabe merely chuckled, "Gonna make a brew master outta you yet," he teased, though part of him was serious if it could somehow mean pulling him away from the club in any capacity. "You kidding? I wouldn't have missed this for the world." Gabe had always been a people person, constantly seeking out any opportunity to mingle and meet more people. "She's around here somewhere, probably with Rowan or Taliah-- or both."
