Chapter two: Neighborhood

“This is a brand new neighborhood. I designed it myself.” Said Thomas proudly, smiling at Virgil as they walked through the doors of what seemed to be town hall. “Orientation is later today, but we can have a look around for now”.
Forward down the road, a nice small row of colorful buildings was perfectly aligned. They all had french looking white ornaments along the walls.
“Are there other neighborhoods?”
“Ah, yes. Many, many more.”
“It’s uuh... It’s lovely.” Said Virgil, although it was a little sunny for his taste.
“I hoped you would find it. Every neighborhood is designed to the tastes of their residents. All 322 residents were chosen to create a perfect and harmonious balance. You being one of them, there’s a bit of you in here” Thomas gave Virgil a big smile, to which he tried to smile back.
He couldn’t see any Korean restaurants or In-and-Out fast food restaurants, but rather many frozen yogurt shops. He didn’t have anything against frozen yogurt per say... But it wasn’t his favorite. He doubted it was be anyone’s favorite.
There was a lot of bikeways and people on those old vintage bikes with propped backs that made them look posh and unapproachable. He started to worry he wouldn’t make many friends in heaven.
Virgil followed Thomas to a round square, with white benches facing an elaborate fountain. They sat on one of them.
“Alright, now you’ve seen a bit of the town, time for some introductions.” Thomas snapped his fingers. From thin air, a man appeared right in front of them, after a soft bling. Virgil held onto the bench, letting out a disgruntled sound. “Sorry. He’ll do that. That’s his job. This is Logan. He’ll be a helping hand in your existence here.”
“Hello, Thomas. Hello, Virgil.” Logan said, adjusting his tie. “How can I be of assistance?”
“You can ask him for anything”, Thomas revealed.
“Anything?” Virgil asked, to which Thomas nodded.
“Perhaps you’d like to Kaplansky’s conjecture?” Logan suggested. “Or to know where Amelia Earhart ended up?”
“Or an unicorn, if you’re less of a nerd” said Thomas, shrugging. Virgil gaped, thinking.
“Ah… I’m good, thanks”, he said, finally. Before he was even done with the phrase, a baby bat materialized in his lap. He blinked, realized he had thought for a second about asking for it, just to test it. He caught the little thing in his finger and stroked it’s head.
“I know everything in the universe.” Said Logan, as if explaining himself, before making the bat vanish. “Including your fondness of… What did you call them? ‘Winged puppies’”.
“Great”, Virgil tried not to think about not belonging there, clearing his throat.
“That would be enough, Logan. Thank you”, said Thomas, waving him away. When Virgil blinked, Logan was no longer there. “You can call him whenever you want. Whenever you need help. Sounds good?”
“Yep”, Virgil nodded, although the idea of an all knowing entity around him made him nervous. Thomas stood up, straightening his blazer.
“Well, of course. You didn’t think you would live on the street in the good place, did you?” Virgil stood up and started following him. “Just like this neightborhood is all about it’s inhabitants, your house is specially made to reflect your personally. And… Well, also your soulmate’s”.
“Your soulmate. I know, I know. Hard to believe. But soulmates are real. And everyone here is paired with them” Thomas smiled dreamily. “You know that feeling you get when you see otters holding hands when they sleep?”
“Yes?” Virgil said slowly, worrying this was a test.
“That’s how you’re gonna feel… Everyday”.
