Do you think there's still time for the Magicats to show up or has that theory been scrapped?
As many of you know (and have sighed about), the Magicats are the fandom hill I will die on, so I will keep the prayer candles burning. But honestly? I don’t think they’re going to show up in Season 5.
A lot of people have been hoping to see the Magicats because we want to know more about Catra’s family. Likewise, we wonder if we’re going to get information about Adora’s parents next season. But I am starting to realize that we may never find out about Catra’s or Adora’s origins, and you know what? That would be okay.
Yup. Because She-Ra is about found family. The show is about the connections we choose to create and nurture, and the people we decide are meaningful to us. Of course, it would be wonderful to learn more about Catra’s people and Adora’s family. But even if we don’t, it wouldn’t be to the detriment of their character development.
This whole series has been about individual choice: not blindly following destiny, carving your own path, etc. That extends to the concept of family. Throughout the show, we see how Adora chooses Bow, Glimmer, Angella, and the rest of the Princess Alliance to be her family. In Season 4, Scorpia joins them. Her conversation with Frosta, whose family we also know little about, is a perfect example of how meaningful found family can be:
Scorpia: The Horde always told me I was different, that I wouldn’t fit in with you all, but you’re making me feel the opposite of not belonging, which I guess is belonging?
Frosta: I used to feel that way, too. And then I met Glimmer and the others, and I realized that none of us fit in. We’re all different, but that’s okay.
Magicats or not, you know what we are going to see in Season 5? Catra becoming part of Adora’s family again. The relationship between Catra and Adora is at the heart of the show. Noelle has even said that “they care more about each other than any girl in the world.” (x) As children growing up in the Horde, they were each other’s found family. Even when they are on opposite sides of a war and seem to have irreconcilable differences, Catra and Adora still feel tied to one another.
In Season 5, Catra is in the perfect place to rejoin Adora. She’s realizing that what she thought she wanted, power and control, isn’t what she truly longs for: that’s love and connection. Now, she’s stuck on Horde Prime’s ship with Glimmer and will have to work with her to survive. Glimmer is already part of Adora’s found family; if she trusts Catra, then she can vouch for her to Adora. But first, Catra has to choose the side of good. She has to ally herself with Glimmer, admit her past mistakes, and want to become a better person.
Catra has a long road ahead of her, but her redemption is coming, and it will inevitably involve her choice to reconcile with Adora. The real question is, will Adora choose her in the end?
I would bet on it, Magicats or no Magicats.
