Do you think there’s eridian theatre kids? Do you think they begged and begged and BEGGED for Mr Grace to direct their next show? Do you think they chose a human production just to remind him of home?
The concept of grace sobbing his eyes out watching his pebbles doing their best rendition of cats: the musical just for him.
Everyone knows the first day of Friend Grace’s class is nickname day. It’s the day when every pebble is on their best behavior to try and make sure they get a cool nickname, something unique that they can brag to their friends and classmates about.
Sometimes, Grace will do it without thinking. That’s how Kiddo and Buddy got their nicknames. Often, Grace will nickname students after their coloration. Gaia got his nickname because he’s blue and green, and apparently looks a lot like Earth. Violet got hers because she’s purple. (She was initially disappointed since color means nothing to Eridians, but then Friend Grace showed them violet flowers and said that humans often associated purple with wealth and royalty, and she changed her tune.) Most of the time, Grace will give his students what he calls “regular human names” like Abby, Carl, or Martin.
But the most coveted nicknames are ones named after Earthen creatures. When ♩♪♬ 🎵 ♩♪♬ 🎵 first introduced themselves, Friend Grace immediately perked up and shouted “Robin!” After a bit of explaining himself and a few videos of bird calls, Robin was trilling and chirping happily, excited at having a nickname that felt like a 1-to-1 translation of their own.
Even well after Friend Grace is gone, his legacy remains. A hundred years into the future, when humankind finally launches a new ship with the express purpose of properly meeting their Eridian neighbors, one of the first messages exchanged is “Hello! My name Robin.”

Rocky talks wrong. It takes Adrian a few weeks to realize it properly, because it’s just on the verge of noticeable, but once they do notice, they can’t stop thinking about it. And sure, when excited or distressed Rocky’s always had a tendency to forget to speak in full sentences, but this is not the same.
On bad days his questions aren’t even grammatically a question- just a statement spoken with a different inflection. He remembers himself when called out on it, which should be soothing but it just makes Adrian worry more. (“Adrian go sleep soon?” “Was that question, question?” “Yes was question. Adrian go sleep soon, question?”)
On that note, his sentences tend to be missing certain unnecessary words. “Was question” instead of “it was question.”
In his defense, Rocky has been in space for literal decades- has been completely alone for most of that time and living with a literal alien for another considerable portion of it, so Adrian tries to not make a big deal out of it, but it does keep happening.
Then Adrian gets roped into building the alien’s biodome. Alright, “roped into” isn’t the correct word, because Adrian was the one to suggest it, if only to spend more time with their mate who in turn spends a lot of time with said alien. It makes sense for Rocky to be with Grace- while Grace can understand Eridian very nearly fluently by the time he arrives on Erid, he is physically incapable of speaking it and needs Rocky to translate to other Eridians for him. Adrian stars to learn the alien’s language too, because Rocky can’t be there at all times and construction moves so much quicker with another Eridian being able to translate. (They need to build him a speaking device at some point!)
About six months in to learning Grace’s language, is when it happens. Adrian comes home, notices Rocky who is preparing to leave and asks “Where Rocky going?” With the exact same inflection as a usual question but without the actual Eridian grammar for making it a question. Their sentence is even missing an entire “is” because it was just quicker not to say it.
Funnily enough Rocky doesn’t even notice it, he’s on his way to a very important thrum about the possibility of disseminating Taumoeba to other affected stars so he just hums about the purpose of his hurry and leaves. Adrian on the other hand stops dead in their tracks, having to re-evaluate their entire life, because all of Rocky’s unnatural mannerisms suddenly have a very simple answer. Rocky did it because talking to Grace was easier that way. And it seems to be contagious. For some reason Adrian doesn’t seem to be able to find it in themselves to care.
Eva Stratt doesn’t believe in ghosts, but she doesn’t want to believe she’s losing herself either, so she makes an exception for Ryland Grace as she watches the Hail Mary astronauts launch. He stands beside her, transparent and willowy, dressed in his knit hat and fox sweater, and cranes his neck just slightly to the sky. She sees the rocket’s light reflect in his glasses. His breath doesn’t fog the air. He’s close enough that his warmth should radiate out to her, but she’s still cold. He is exactly as he would have been today if she had not brought the gavel down and executed him beneath this sky three days ago. She stands alone in Baikonur, and he stands with her.
Later, when they try her for her crimes, he stands at the courtroom door and stares directly at her in that knit cap and crème fox sweater. When they drag her off, he walks with her, his pale hands in his pockets against the cold. He sits with her in her cell when they keep her in solitary confinement for twenty days straight, his eyes tired, bent over his knees as they wait for the minutes to tick by together. He never says a word.
Wherever the countries of the world cart her next, passing her around like a scrap of meat they all want to get a bite out of, he follows. When they break her out to save the world again a million times over — to fix their food crises, their wars, their revolutions — he’s there. He never once looks angry, only disappointed. She doesn’t believe in ghosts, but it’s a strange relief for Eva Stratt to be proven wrong.

I’m telling this story again b/c fuck it but anyways I was playing D&D and one of my friends went “brown bear brown bear what do you see” and on cue three of us turn to him and like, death metal screech “ALLLL”.
The dude goes completely pale faced. I saw true horror in his eyes.
He didn’t know the joke.
So apparently dude just had three of his best friends demonically screech at him for no goddamn reason.
I do not think I will ever cause that level of sheer terror and confusion ever again in my life.
