There’s a song echoing softly from inside the chateau. It sounds hollow and melancholy, bouncing off of walls and windows, filtering through the screen door, but JJ still smiles softly and reaches for your hand. His fingers are covered in dirt and just a little bit of blood, and you can hardly remember what they look like without. 

“Dance with me,” he says.

You shake your head, “JJ-” 

“Dance with me,” he says again, this time leaning forwards to grab your hands and pull you from the hammock. He’s already swaying to the song when you stumble against him. He’s at least half a beat off but you can’t really fault him for it. He loves to dance.

You rest your cheek against his shoulder. He squeezes your fingers. 

“I love this song,” you whisper. 

“I know,” he replies, then hesitates before adding: “I wish things were different.” 

“I know.”
