Throwback Thursday Styling Tip this week will be focused on how to create custom glued hairline on a wig from scratch. Now, I know there are tons of glued hairline tutorials out there, but I do it a little differently and I found it to produce a pretty realistic result without the hairline “floating” problem. The wig in this pic is a cheap wig I bought to style into a Kurogane (Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle) wig. I used the same hairline technique to create extremely unique-shaped hairlines for the Vegeta (DBZ) wig and Yusuke (Yu Yu Hakusho) wig as well. Using this technique is easier to get accurate custom hairline which is very difficult to replicate with a lacefront wig, especially if you don’t know how to hand-ventilate hair. - On the inside of the wig, glue a strip of clear vinyl fabric on with Fabri-Tac glue. Hold until it completely dries. I chose to use clear vinyl because it’s waterproof and can be shaped with heat from the hairdryer if need to. Since it’s waterproof, when you wear the wig and apply spirit gum to glue down the inside of the hairline to your forehead area, it will stick better and is easier to clean off the residue later. - Pin the wig on a foam head. Use a marker that’s close in color to your wig and mark the hairline shape you want. You may want to do the marking while trying the wig on to make sure it works for your forehead shape. Cut off the excess vinyl outside the marked area. If you need the vinyl to be larger for more extreme hairline, you can cut in darts and Fabri-Tac glue it so it’s more curved to your forehead shape, and not pointing out straight. - Mix craft glue and water in a cup. I used Elmer’s clear glue. You can use regular Elmer’s glue or school glue, but I find the clear Elmer’s glue to be best for dark colored wigs. Mixing ratio of glue to water is 3:1. Make sure to not use too much water, you want a syrup-like texture after you mix it with a paint brush. - Cut a small piece of hair from loose wefts. Point-cut into the tip of the hair piece to create varying points and thin out the tip. - Brush on the water-downed glue to the tip of the hair piece on both sides. I don’t go above one inch from the tip. Use your finger to squeeze the glue on the hair to help spread it through all layers and to help flatten the piece. - It should look flat and pointy after it dries. You can make a lot of pieces like this and set them to dry on a big plastic bag. I make about 30-40 of these hair pieces for a normal wig’s hairline. It is time-consuming but the result is worth it! - Next, put a thin layer of Fabri-Tac glue on the back of the hair piece. Press down the hair piece to the clear vinyl in the center. Fabri-Tac takes longer to dry than hot glue but it’s more permanent and won’t cause the hair piece to be bulky. - Continue the same step as the last. Make sure to position the hair piece so that the tips go a bit past the clear vinyl. This will help cover the seams and hide the vinyl in the process. - And you’re done! Enjoy fabulous hairline. Make sure to research how to apply and remove spirit gum before wearing the wig.
Did you ever felt Sailor Moon is too popular? I became a fan in 2010 and, I dunno, I liked fandom more in 2010-2012 before revival and nostalgia craze. I just prefer smaller or more calm fandoms I guess. It also feel weird for me 'cause when I started to watch Sailor Moon it was considered old and not good and seemed to be quite forgotten and now it has funkos. It's been 5 years since Crystal was announced and I still feel weird with that.
Hey anon!
I have to admit that I feel totally opposite about it being too popular. When I was growing up, and watching the 90s anime, NO ONE ELSE I knew was watching it. Literally, no one I knew watched, or at least admitted they did, and I faced some ridicule for being a fan, as well, so for years and years, I felt totally alone in this fandom. I knew there were other fans out there, because of fanfics and the like, but social media such as this wasn’t really a thing back then, so I was still pretty isolated.
All that being said, I’m not really sure the fandom has really grown all that much. I know there’s some new fans, which is really exciting to me! But I think it’s more of a thing where we’re all able to connect now, so it just appears to be all that much bigger.
I’m so sorry you feel like it’s gotten too big, but I hope you know there’s always a place for you here? The more Sailor Moon loving people there are, I really feel like the world’s a better place for it <3
I don’t know about anybody else, but I was dragged in against my will in mid-to-late 2015. @smokingbomber innocently made Bronze Age research comments at me for some Golden Kingdom stuff, and then dangled the Shitennou in front of me, and twenty-some years of going “no I got forced to sit through an episode once why would I ever watch that” has since turned into “my brother now makes Tuxedo Mask jokes at me at every opportunity as revenge for the random merch lying around…”
I…..
I have been a fan since 1995 and I feel like anon literally just slapped me across the face.
The fandom is “too big” because Gross Fandom Olds like me heard about the Viz project and got excited and dived back in full force?
Jesus wept. If the Crystalfen hadn’t already all but driven me out of fandom, this would do it. Hope you enjoy a smaller fandom, anon, because I was literally looking over some abandoned fics last night and thinking I’d pick them back up. Fat chance if this is where the fandom is going.
I almost stopped reading at ‘I became a fan in 2010’ lmao if you don’t like big fandoms then probably the largest shoujo fandom in the world may not be for you. From about 2000 to idk when Viz got the rights it was hard just to get new blood because everything was out of print or hard to find and I am SO GLAD I can just link my friends to Sailor Stars whenever I want.
GRANTED there are many niches and types of Sailor Moon fan, I still think it’s really neat that most of us Old Guard ‘I Watched This on TV After/Before School’ fans follow each other :D
You know what?
I take it back.
I’ve survived Save Our Sailors, the death of DiC/Cloverway/Geneon, The Anti-Chibi-Usa Action Force/Chibi-Usa Defense League wars, Yahoo Groups, the fall of Geocities, The Great Fanfiction.net Purge, LiveJournal, Strikethrough, the Sailor Moon Dark Ages, and Sailor Moon Crystal, and I didn’t do it so some pissant who didn’t join fandom until the second manga reprint could tell me I’m only here for the nostalgia and that I make MY FANDOM too fucking big.
If you like tiny hipster fandoms without “old” fans, anon, go find one. You don’t get to rewrite one of the biggest fandoms of all time just to suit you.
I like Funkos and other merchandise for my fandoms. It gives me things to obsessively collect and fill my apt with. :) And more people means more interaction, which is usually a good thing. The only thing is that I do sometimes troll people who disagree with me, but that’s usually meant to be harmless.
I’ve been a fan since it aired in the States back in the summer of 95, and I’ve never left :D
Back then I'd record the show onto VHS (gasp) before going to school in the mornings. As a clarinetist, I made it my mission to figure out the notes to the theme song. I think it might have been easier for band kids to find other fans since all we had to do was play the intro and bam! You could find the other fans :)
My kids were pretty much born into the fandom. The oldest and youngest were exposed to Sailor Moon via Cartoon Network in the room at the hospital before they were 24 hours old. Now we are coming upon Con season and they are going to do a walk on with me during the Masquerade. Our merry little group will be doing characters from Sailor Moon ^_^
I can honestly say I never saw the Sailor Moon fan community die. It did quiet down a lot over the last few years. First with the migration from the usenet groups to Live Journal and Forums, and then with the many fandom pages and rings going dark. For a while all we had sustaining us were more new musicals after the Live Action ended. Over the last 10+ years I have always seen a few Sailor Moon cosplayers at Anime Central. I can see where it would be hard to see a vibrant community though if you didn’t know where to look.
I think everyone is very excited at everything going on right now related to Sailor Moon. I wish there was a bit more filler (never thought I would say that) in Crystal, but I do love the fact that Naoko can finally see her dream come to fruition. When they first announced a new Sailor Moon project I had hoped for something based on the Starlights, maybe the Sailor Wars, or something set around Crystal Tokyo... There were so many directions it could have taken. Perhaps we can be treated to something new like Parallel Moon after Stars ends. I do hope they stretch it out a bit more than they will be with SuperS.
I am glad to see all the new fans that are discovering their love for Sailor Moon. :)
Shelter Music Video
Wow. This is a really neat and emotional anime short.
Lots of talent went into producing this. It's a collaboration with Porter Robinson and Madeon producing the music. Porter also created the story. Storyboard: Toshihumi Akai, Character Design: Megumi Kouno, Rin VA: Sachika Misawa, Art Director: Yusuke Takeda ( GiTS:SAC )
The art is wonderful and the music is pretty neat. It's a little over 6 minutes. http://youtu.be/fzQ6gRAEoy0
Vintage Coldspot Jr. Refrigerator Restoration
Otherwise known as: I want an epic cool vintage looking refrigerator perfect for photoshoots / vids and Grace's Bakery just isn't cutting it. I have been hunting for various kitchen appliances for my daughter's dolls for a long time. One of the things she enjoys doing is setting up restaurants and setting up food related scenes. She also likes to take pictures and shoot mini vids. After some research I thought the old Coldspot fridge would be perfect scale-wise. I picked this one up back in January of 2015. I started the restoration work on it in October/November. In between costume and dress work I was able to finish this around Christmas Eve. As you can see it was in a sorry state when it arrived. The pictures in the auction didn't detail the rusted behemoth I had decided to take on, but I'm no stranger to prop work so I decided to soldier on. I started off with taking apart as much as I could. I decided that I wanted to keep as much of it's charm as I could. The knobs on the freezer compartment were taped off with painters tape to protect them, and the sign on the fridge was safely stowed away for later. I then used a metal brush to get rid of the largest offending rust spots. I had a respirator and safety glasses on the whole time. After I was satisfied with that I used mineral spirits to clean everything up. After all that dried I started the painting process with some Rustoleum Rusty metal Primer. After a few rounds of primer & sanding, I continued with the appropriate colors. White for the refrigerator, black for the base, farm red for the handles and silver for the metal trays. I also fixed the issues with the main door latch, added new feet to the base and fixed the bent and crooked ice cube tray door. Most of it went back together pretty smoothly. The only thing that gave me a real issue was putting the door back. It required quite a bit of force and finagling to get the steel rod back in place w/ proper door closing action. I scraped a bit of the inside in the process. Overall I am very pleased with the overall look and my daughter loves it! Future plans include adding another shelf since one of the originals was missing when I purchased it. I'm including a few before and after pictures.
Pan Am Plaza is a great open space with a beautiful Union Station backdrop. Why is no one shooting flash mob dance videos or movies or fashion shows or anything here?
As I promised, the other anniversary coaster I got.
I tried to get L/G too, I promise. But they were the first issue ones and they’re much harder (and way more expensive) to find.

Slayers - Get Along (8-Bit Mix)
(2.0 version, basically a remake of an earlier attempt of mine.)
OKAY SO. Today an anime store an hour and a half or so from me was having a big pre-Black Friday sale at their warehouse. They wanted to clear out some stock before the next con year started, so we drove down there to take advantage of it. They’re one of the few anime stores in the country that still carries a lot of cels, and so naturally I went for the Slayers cels. A friend spotted this one and showed me, and HOLY SHIT. My FAVORITE EPISODE and still one of the funniest things in the series. And since this was a pan, probably the only cel of this picture that exists? It’s listed as an A-1 (which means a ‘key cel’).
I had to jump it, and I am psyched because even though, of course, it doesn’t actually have any of the main characters on it, it is the BEST THING EVER. And in great condition/with all the layers (the background, foreground, and the original sketch- where the picture frame looks quite different from the final product!). It was also well under one hundred dollars, which is great for a key cel with all the layers.
I am so hyped. DRAGON CUISINE! DRAGON CUISINE! I cannot wait to frame this WORK OF ART and display it on my wall. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Wow! What an awesome cel! You are so incredibly lucky! :D
I needed to see this gifset today..
