Epilogue to chapter one - New Arrivals
When Galvan came too, Rita immediately stopped the leech seeds and pulled them off of Dreigh while putting a feeler to the Scizorâs forehead and smiling a bit. âOkay good, heâs awake, but until we cure the poison inside of him he wonât be able to move his wings. Hello dear, youâre not doing too fine right now so try your best to reserve energy, and the birdie youâre talking about was Tookie, sheâs fine, sheâs fetching some things for you right now as we speak along with our leaders. Do you have a name?â
Galvan was still a little out of it due to his situation, but he was able to respond after a short moment. âR-Right, um⌠Iâll have to thank Tookie.â He said, feeling rather uneasy. Mostly since he is unable to flutter his wings currently. âMy name is Galvan. I-Iâm a chef from Unova.â He introduced himself, giving as good a smile as he could right now.
âGalvan, nice to meet you. Iâm known as Momma RitĂ around here and this is my partner, Dreigh. Right now youâre very sick and if weâre not quick enough about it, you can potentially die. Donât freak out, I have my fastest associates on gathering the materials I need right now and once I get them, I can make you a cure.â The Meganium stated as calmly as possible before standing up and then heading toward a flower patch. She reached her feelers into it and pulled out a wooden bowl and stick then returned to him.
âTell me, did you eat anything from..here? Er-let me reiterate..something in the wild? Native to this land?â
âI-It is nice to meet you Miss Rita, and you too Mister Dreigh.â Galvan then felt a little nervous at the prospect of well, dying. He had just gotten here, and already he had screwed up so badly he was very close to dying. Not exactly the best confidence booster. âW-Well, all I had since I got here were these little round berries, I-I thought they looked safe to eatâŚâ He answered her nervously. âA-Am I in trouble, Miss Rita?â
Dreigh huffed as he was spoken to. The Noivern wasnât much of a social type and only talked to Lark and Swift because his stay was under their lead; In fact,t he only person he was ever truly social with was Rita and sometimes Tookie. His rude response was met with a slight frown from Rita however and earned him a lash from one of her feelers which was mostly ineffective but did send its message.
âYouâre only in trouble if I can make this cure in time, but from the looks of things you have more than enough time. The berry you eat was probably what we cal here a reverse Cheri berry. They look exactly like a Cheri berry with the only clear distinction being a sliiightly darker shade of red. As you can imagine, we call it a reverse Cheri berry because instead of loosening up paralyzed muscles, it makes them tighter and more tense to the point of complete immobilization. If you consume one too many, itâll stop your heart and youâll die within a few seconds, but youâre fine, not fine as in youâre healthy, fine as in youâre not going to die from the poisoning, but if we donât get your wings flapping again youâll die from overheating.â
As she explained this to him, Lark came down quick with a small wooden bucket filled as high as possible with water and not too long after that Swift came with the berries requested. Both birds placed the materials down next to Rita then Swift took a step closer to Galvan and just stared down at him for a moment before looking at Rita. âHe will live?â She asked as Rita took the Pecha berries and placed them inside the bowl then crushed them up with the stick.
âHe will be fine once I get that root from your tree. Now, Galvan, as I was explaining to you. Right now your muscles are not going respond to you at all, youâre not paralyzed though, thatâs a common misconception about the Reverse Cheri. People think it paralyzes, but really itâs a poison attacking your nervous system so you use Pecha solutions to fix this one, now I do warn you. The medicine Iâm going to make you will taste AWFUL, but thatâll pass. After all Iâm sure a bitter taste in exchange for your life is fair, no?â
Lark and Swift looked at each other with expressions of disgust. Theyâve tried Ritaâs medicines before and knew just how bad they can be; Effective, yes, but even they wondered to themselves which was more worth it. While they went about that, Faye finally made her way to the group. In her mouth she was holding a root that she dropped by Rita.
âI hope you know I just got done grooming myself and now I got dirt all over my scarf again..â She complained while crossing her paws to which Rita chuckled and took the root. âI appreciate your sacrifice, Faye, dear. Now.â
Rita squeezed the root tightly till she got a green tinted liquid to spill from it into the bowl. After that she added water to the bowl and mixed it with the stick a little more before finally standing up and approaching Galvanâs face. Carefully she got his mouth opened and poured the liquid down into his mouth. It was just as she said, the medicine was extremely bitter in taste, but it would definitely do itâs intended purpose and help loosen up his body all around Once the entire thing was gone, Rita would place the bowl down next to her then head over to what was left of the bucket of water then proceed to toss it over Galvan.
âThere. He should be fine in a few minutes if not seconds.â
Galvan seemed relieved that he was going to make it. Though he was doing his best now to remember everything Rita is telling him, as he doesnât want to end up in a situation like this again. Thankfully with his experience as a chef, heâd be able to figure out this distinction now that he actually knows about it.
He was about to speak up when the two Togekiss arrived, watching as one of them seemed to be inspecting him closely. It did make him feel a little bit awkward, but that passed soon enough. âY-Yes, I do not mind. A bitter taste is nothing compared to my other fateâŚâ
Though once the liquid actually hit his mouth, the full bitterness hit him like a rock type rolling down a hill. His eyes widened quite significantly, but he was doing his best to drink it all. Thankfully it was over soon, and Galvan took a few deep breaths as he felt his chest area loosen up a bit. Though as his body slowly regained muscle control, Galvan was still in an awkward state from having been paralyzed, so his muscles spaz out a little while his wings come out and start fluttering like mad. âO-Oh dear, I-Iâm sorry if I have little control right nowâŚâ He apologized.
As Galvan regainedâŚsomewhat control of himself, Rita and the others celebrated a mini rejoice while not seeming to mind at all that he was not entirely in control of himself.
âYouâll regain full control of yourself soon enough, my dear.â Rita said as she stood and started a walk off. âIf you need anything else, those two know where to find me. Letâs go dreigh.â
All that was left now was him, Faye, Lark, Swift and Tookie who just for a moment watched him with smiles on their faces then tilted their heads.
âWaitâŚso what now? Where is your home anyway?â Faye asked while the others just nodded to agree with that question.Â
âThank you so much, Miss Rita. I owe you one.â Galvan said with a smile, though his muscles were till kinda twitching. When they left, he saw the other four Pokemon watching him, getting a little nervous until one of them spoke up. âMy home? Iâm from Unova. I mostly stayed at White Forest until I found a job in Castelia City as a chef.â He replied, smiling softly.
âA chef?â Tookie squawked while flying close to him.
Lark and Swift both just looked at each otjer then Faye before finally looking back at Galvan. âHey, I hope you didnât have any intention of getting back to Unova any time soon. This continent is pretty remote from the already known ones so thereâs not really any boats or what not to take anyone back. Ask Faye here, sheâll tell you the same thing and she too is from Unova.â
Faye nods and climbs up on top of Larkâs head. âTis true. A big ol'predator bird snatched me up and next thing I know, after passing out, I woke up hereâŚâ
Swift meanwhile looked at her brother again and whispered something to him which made Lark bring a wing beneath his chin as he looked up and thought then nodded. âOooh, yeah yeah, you have a point..â he said while getting a slight smile on his face before looking back at Galvan. âYouâre always welcome to stay here though! A chef would be something useful to have. We kinda haveâŚa little problem, y'see..â
As Lark made a few incoherent gestures with his wings, his sister rolled her eyes and stepped closer to the Scizor. âWhat my brother is trying to iterate is that we have predators here who eat meat and prey, but the predaotrs tend to Just rip apart bodies and make messes as well as sometimes leave dead carcasses around which stink up the place, but if you can cook meats, they get their fill and yiy elimate that problem for us. How does that sound? In return, youâre protected by everyone here.â
Galvan did initially seem worried at the prospect of not being able to return home soon, but he had left initially to learn about cuisines in new lands. Though this setback of getting stranded here, he was going to make the best of this situation. Though it helped calm his nerves knowing the Cinccino was also Unovan.
âWell, I wasnât carried here by bird, b-but I did get stranded here when a bad storm carried my raft far off where I intended to goâŚâ He seemed a little embarrassed now that he said it out loud. He actually planned going by raft from Unova to Alola by himself. A rather not well thought out planâŚ
âA-Ah, you really mean it? I can stay here?â Galvan looked a little hopeful, and then focused when he heard they had a problem with predators. Now, despite Galvan being a Scizor, he had very little combat prowess, in fact he was downright terrible at that sort of thing if things got ugly. âA-Ah, they arenât going to eat me, are they?â Galvan asked, a hint of nervousness in his voice.
How unfortunate, they all thought. Not that where he landed was bad though, considering that now that he was there they were more than willing to accept him, but seeing how they werenât needed anymore, Swift and Faye both looked at Lark, Swift leaning over to whisper something to her brother which he gave a confirming nod to and then watched her fly off with the Cinccino holding onto her head.
âOkay, back to you.â Lark said with a smile. âOf course youâre welcome here, hopefully youâre not used to living a human life style though, here in this sanctuary we live one hundred percent wild meaning that youâll be cooking over a fire made by sticks and not a oven. Hopefully thatâs alright for you and I donât mean to cut this conversation short, but I must be getting back to my post now, alright? Surely you can make yourself at home by yourself right?â
"O-Oh dear, it will take a lot of time to adjust to cooking that way." Galvan chuckled nervously, hearing how they were completely wild here. Though maybe with a bit of ingenuity, he may be able to make something close enough to be familiar with. But that was for another time. "Once I get my muscles under control again, I should be fine. Thank you very much!" The grateful bug replied with a small smile.
