There was only a select few that knew the truth of what was going on with Scott.
It had started about a month and a half ago, a flu bug that didn't want to let go of him it felt like. He had gone to the doctor and test after test, they just kept coming back with the same thing, it was the flu, he was overworked, etc. But about two weeks ago, he finally got with a doctor who agreed with Scott that something wasn't right and dug further than the others.
He still hadn't been ready for what they told him.
When the doctor was explaining to him what they had found, it was as if Scott suddenly had cotton in his ears. HIs mind immediately going back to his mom, his months of taking care of her as the cancer ate away at her, he had never felt so helpless than he did then. Thankfully his wasn't the same variety of his moms and the doctor seemed very positive about the outcome; Scott did ask one thing.
"Can I at least play until it's time for me to start treatment?"
The doctor had explained since it was thyroid cancer which was slow growing, and what he saw at present was contained - he didn't see an issues in Scott continuing to play until it was time. Labs and diagnosing generally took 2-6 weeks as it was which would give him until at least the play offs. He had let his coach and management know, his teammates he hadn't told yet, he already felt like he was going to be letting them down and didn't want to add to that. He did let Carter and Eric know, but they kept quiet, helping Scott skirt the press for asking questions.
He didn't make the decision to play at the All Star game lightly, seeing it as one last hurrah with his fellow players. But he wouldn't lie that the wind was knocked out of his sails pretty quickly, his exhaustion creeping into him. He thought he had been masking it well when Shane Hollander had came over and asked what was up.
Looking at Shane he said, "huh? Oh." He pulled his shirt on. Of course Hollander spotted that Scott was off his game. He wanted to lie, he didn't want to share his sob story yet again. But he also knew Hollander, and knew the kid was smart as hell. Most of all, Scott respected him.
"Uhm, yeah sorry, haven't been on my game for a few weeks now." Scott said, "It's been rough."
