Sony will include a mono microphone/headset with every PS4, reports CVG's Andy Robinson, who was in attendance, via Twitter. Great for all the online gamers!
The machine is even capable in split/screen multiplayer games to use the PS4 Eye to identify where players are sat and move the windows around to be suit each player's location in front of the TV.Â
The DualShock 4's lightbar - the illuminated panel across the top of the controller - will assist player recognition by shining a different colour on each controller in use. The lightbar, Sony said, can also be used for in-game effects such as gun muzzle flash health bars.
Sony showed off cute augmented reality demo featuring little robots living inside the controller. The could player shake the pad and press buttons to interact with the robots.
Sony also confirmed during the presentation that it will raise the PSN friend limit on PS4, according to IGN. It didn't specify what the new limit will be, but currently the PS3 enforces a 100-friend limit.
It also promised that every PS4 will come with a "very large hard drive", but again held off confirming capacities.
IGN also reports that the DualShock 4 controller will come with an extension port on it - likely to provide the possibility for add-ons in future. It will also revert back to regular digital buttons, doing away with the pressure-sensitive buttons on the PS2 and PS3 controllers due to the fact that no one used them on PS3.
THe PS4 will also charge the DualShock 4 (via a USB cable) even when on standby, unlike the PS3, which has to be fully switched on to provide power to drained controllers.
Some great facts now to digest :)Â
NVIDIAÂ has announced that Sony's PlayStation 4 console will support its latest collision detection and physics technology.
The graphics pioneer has distributed its Nvidia PhysX and Nvidia APEX development kits to PS4 programmers to help bolster the machine's visual capabilities.
PhysX and APEX tech can be used to create cutting-edge collision detection in games, as well as simulate rigid bodies, clothing, fluids, particle systems and more.
"Great physics technology is essential for delivering a better gaming experience and multiplatform support is critical for developers," said Mike Skolones, product manager for PhysX at NVIDIA.Â
"With PhysX and APEX support for PlayStation 4, customers can look forward to better games."
Unveiled in February, the PS4 has been compared to a "supercharged PC". It features an x86 CPU, enhanced PC GPU and 8GB RAM.
Ubisoft Explains The Difference Between Next Gen And PS3/360 Versions of Assassinâs Creed 4
Assassinâs Creed 4: Black Flag is a next-gen game and will also contain support for next-gen console features. Ubisoft has revealed some information on the difference between current gen and next-gen versions of the game.
âThe game will also be available on Next Gen consoles,â they revealed. âIn addition to improved graphics and physic, Next Gen versions will bring to the players new connected features allowing them to feel that even if they remain âSingle Playerâ it will be better to be a âSingle Connected Playerâ. âI mean, that Next Gen Consoles will allow players to have a solo experience that benefit the presence of a huge community.â
There also some PS4 controller specific features that they will be revealing later. Microsoftâs next-gen console will most probably be revealed in April, and we may have more information on the game then or at E3.
Say hello to 100GB downloads,The Verge reported this week that Sony Electronics President and Chief Operating Officer Phil Molyneux confirmed 4K video will indeed be supported on the PS4.Â
4K Ultra HD
4K UHD is a resolution of 3840 pixels à 2160 pixels (8.3 megapixels, aspect ratio 16:9). 4K UHD has twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of the 1080p HDTV format, with four times as many pixels overall.
Speculation - with films in excess of 100GB could we see HDD's coming out double, triple the size or current machines? TERABYTES PEOPLE, GET HYPE!
PlayStation 4 interface shown off in HD screenshots
Sony has released high-resolution images of the PlayStation 4 user interface, including its user profiles and Share functions.
The PS4 desktop lets you scroll through available games and apps, such as the console's music services and internet browser.
The profile screen shows a large photo of the user, along with options for text and voice chat, plus links to your recent activity, about me section and friends.
Trophies are given top billing underneath the users' full name and user ID. If a player is online you can watch a live stream of their game in progress, with the option to instantly join them in-game.
Speaking of sharing, the Share screen reveals the three ways you'll be able to show off the game you're playing: via a static screenshot, video clip or live video broadcast.
The images show how players will edit their video - by selecting start and end points via thumbnails and trimming accordingly. It all looks very straightforward.
A shot of the live streaming screen shows an in-progress game being broadcast live on Ustream, along with a live-cam thumbnail of the gamer in the bottom right corner and a comments feed for text chat with viewers.
Sony has also included screenshots of the above working on smartphone and tablet devices, presumably through PlayStation App. Sony announced the Xbox SmartGlass-style application last week during its PS4 conference. It will enable touchscreen-based devices to be used as a second control method.
The first PS4 game has been shown off at Sony's PlayStation conference - Knack. The game, created by Mark Cerny, who has worked on every PlayStation since the original, is a child-friendly action title for PS4.
An action adventure platformer Knack looks like good solid fun, if not quite the next-gen experience we were expecting straight away. Sony did use Knack to show off how players will be able to use Gaikai to stream PS4 games to the PS Vita.
Killzone: Shadow Fall
By far one of the most visually impressive games to be shown at Sonyâs PS4 reveal, Guerrilla Gamesâ Killzone: Shadow Fall showed just what FPS fans could expect. With incredible detail and intricate environments and characters, Shadow Fall impressed with every frame.
But, it also managed to look like actual gameplay, rather than the smoke and mirrors debut of a certain PS3 Killzone 2 video. Here it was obvious that Guerrilla was presenting in-game footage. Even the nifty cover mechanic was back and given whoever was playing the chance to duck behind walls as the Helghast tried to pump them full of bullets.
Driveclub
Another impressive new game that showed just what the PS4 could do visually as well as socially with its new social networking and sharing options. Evolution Studios, the team behind Motorstorm, has revealed the sim racer which is all about driving 'the best cars in the world' and also about people.
The game is the title that has been rumoured recently online, a sim racer developed in the west. The title focuses on team play; the entire game is about racing in real clubs all around the world and rewards you for playing in clubs.
The game will also support challenge integration via phones - '24/7 untethered access to your challenge, any time, home or away', according to Matt Southern, Evolution Studios dev.
The Henessey Venom GT and a Koenigsegg were shown off, with 'each individual thread in the weave of the carbon fibre' and 'lenses that refract the real roads underneath', have been modelled. Evolution also revealed that Drive Club has been in the planning for ten years.
 InFamous: Second Son
After focusing on the increase in surveillance cameras in the UK and how much we as a society are watched by the powers that be Sucker Punch posited the question: what would happen in an overly watched society if people with super powers suddenly revealed themselves?
Well, if the InFamous: Second Son footage is anything to go by, tons of explosions and open world action. Infamous: Second Son seems to be an interesting twist on the super hero genre mixing incredible visuals with a compelling hook.
The reveal video didnât show what kind of game Second Son will be, but itâs more than likely to be a third-person action game, possibly set in an open world just like the other Infamous games.
The trailer showed a heavily militarised Seattle and asks the question âwhat would happen if super heroes existed and how will the world react?â Well, it might involve lots of explosions and tons of action.
Infamous: Second Son is a PS4 exclusive and stars Delsin Rowe as the lead character, who looks like heâs ready to cause all sorts of trouble.
Deep Down (working title)
Capcom revealed that it was working on fantasy-based action game with the working title of Deep Down. It wasnât clear if it was an RPG in the same vein as Dragonâs Dogma or Dark Souls, but it did look very heavily influenced by the recent pair of dark fantasy RPGs.
What it did show was a lone soldier (with amazing facial detail) face-off against a classic, fire-breathing dragon. Smashing through scenery and showing just what could be achieved on the PS4, Deep Down was enough to make any Darks Souls fan drool.
Watch Dogs
Ubisoft wheeled out Watch Dogs again and though it showed gameplay very similar to what we saw last year at E3, it was still very impressive stuff. Ubisoft also revealed that Watch Dogs will launch on PS4 when it is released and will take full advantage of the impressive new graphical capabilities.Â
Watch Dogs will allow players to invade peopleâs privacy in an advanced open world.
The new gameplay footage reveals a stunning open world with an incredible number of unique ways that players can hack into peopleâs mobile phones and manipulating the information.
The gameplay is similar to the E3 demo shown last year, but now that Watch Dogs has been confirmed for the PS4, the impressive footage can really show off what Ubisoftâs game can do.
The Watch Dogs footage showed an amazingly detailed open world with large numbers of NPCs and characters and even a chase through a building that appeared totally improvised. It also showed that players will be able to indulge in a spot of free running.
Using your tech and manipulating the environment around you to evade police appears to be key to success.
 Diablo III(3)
Blizzard revealed that not only is Diablo 3 coming to the PS4, but itâll also be available on the PS3, too. Focusing on couch-based multiplayer, Diablo 3 on the PS4 will let up to four players work together.
Taking the chance to use the PS4âs new tech, Blizzard is also making a few enhancements to the engine, too. Itâs a classic PC franchise used to mouse and keyboard control, but Blizzard is redesigning the controls to work seamlessly with the new PS4 controller.
Though there was no word on whether or not Diablo 3 would utilise the new touch-controls, the very fact that Diablo 3 is on its way to consoles is good news.
Destiny
Bungieâs highly anticipated new game, Destiny, might be defined as âshared world shooterâ, but PS4 players will be happy to hear that Destiny will have content exclusive to the PS3 and PS4.
Though Bungie failed to show much in the way of gameplay - much to the chagrin of gamers the world over - it made up for it today by revealing in-game footage of Destiny on the PS4. Though it wasn't played real-time.
Activision described Destiny as the "perfect fit for PS4", touting the next-gen console's ability to connect to multiple devices as a key reason.
Bungie also came on stage and announced that PlayStation gamers will have access to exclusive content when Destiny launches, with both the PS3 and PS4 earning unique customisation equipment.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
CD Projekt RED has revealed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will launch on the PS4 and deliver the âpinnacleâ of the Witcher series.
Head of CD Projekt, Adam Badowski, said:
âWe were thrilled when asked, several months ago, to be one of the developers who were granted early access to the PlayStation 4. It was an exciting moment to be invited to be in the company of other legendary developers like Bethesda, EA, LucasArts, Ubisoft or Activision as one of the teams working on titles shipping early in the PlayStation 4's lifecycle.â
âWe are able to work with the new console from its birth and this allows our in-house REDengine 3 to push the graphical limits of what the PlayStation hardware can display. The console is fresh and has some innovative solutions that we're looking forward to using in our game.â
The Witness
Braid developer Jonathan Blow was something of a surprise appearance for Sony and his reveal that The Witness would debut on the PS4 was genuinely unexpected. Blowâs new game mixes stunning visuals and unique puzzle/exploration gameplay to produce something entirely new.
With an emphasis on blowing things up and focusing on the quieter moments The Witness is Blowâs middle finger to the triple-A gaming scene and with it debuting on the PS4, is evidence that Sony is keen to offer gaming experiences for all tastes.
Media Molecule âcreativeâ game
We donât yet have a name for Media Moleculeâs spiritual successor to its LittleBigPlanet games, but we did get a tantalising look at what its gameplay might look like.
Showing off how players will be able to use the PlayStation Move to mould characters out of virtual clay (using the new PS4 camera), Media Molecule was clear that anyone would be able to make and share content.
Describing the PS4 as the âcreative consoleâ Media Moleculeâs game will give players the chance at creating content, though itâs not quite clear what kind of content.
LittleBigPlanet was clearly a platform game at its heart, but this new PS4 title seems much more ambiguous. At the PS4 reveal two players were seen creating puppet characters with the Move controllers and then making them dance around in some sort of weird theatre installation project.
Itâs certainly intriguing, but without the simple hook that LittleBigPlanet brought to proceedings itâs difficult to understand exactly what Media Moleculeâs new game really is. But it is obviously hugely ambitious.
New Final Fantasy
Shinji Hashimoto, Brand Director for Final Fantasy, arrived at the PS4 reveal and showed us the same impressive in-engine Luminous Studios demo that was revealed last year at E3, but he did also reveal that Square was working on a new Final Fantasy.
This might be obvious, but itâs still really big news and something fans of the series will have been dying to find out. If it can look like the in-engine demo, then the next Final Fantasy will be on par with Advent Children.
Quantic Dream Title
David Cageâs Beyond: Two Souls is still on its way to the PS3, but that doesnât mean that Quantic Dream arenât working on a game exclusively for the PS4. Cage revealed that only through the power of the PS4 can subtle human nuances and emotions be seen on virtual characters.
In fact, thatâs exactly what the PS4 is allowing Cage to do, to realise his vision for cinematic, emotional gaming. Though Quantic Dream didnât have a game to show off, Cage did show some in-engine footage of an old manâs head. That might not sound great, but this was one incredibly detailed head able to show really subtle emotions and real performances.
(The brain) Sony has ditched Cell. The PlayStation 4's main processor is a single-chip custom processor, a x86-64 AMD "Jaguar" with eight cores. A second chip is dedicated to managing uploads and downloads.
(Graphics) The GPU is a similarly impressive AMD next-gen Radeon-based graphics engine that can make 1.84 trillion calculations a second.
(Thinking power) the PS3 packs a borderline improbable 8GB of GDDR5 memory!
(Storage/Drive)As well as a built-in hard drive (the size is yet to be confirmed), the PS4 also features a 6x speed Blu-Ray drive (compared to the PS3's 2x speed one), an 8x speed DVD drive and USB 3.0 for high-speed transfer.
Console features
Sony says the hardware has been designed with developers' needs in mind, a stark contrast to the early days of the PS3 and the claims that it was notoriously hard to develop for.
A new suspend mode lets you "switch off" the PS4 and store the game's current state in its memory. When you return to the system later and press the power button, the game will instantly carry on where it left off, with no need to boot the system and load the game. Much like the PS Vita.
The new PlayStation 4 menu screen will let you see what your friends are doing, while also recommending games, TV shows, movies and music to you. These recommendations will be specific ones unique to you, based on your previous downloads. For example, if you've spent a lot of time playing FIFA 14, it'll recommend the FIFA 15 demo when it's available.
Much like the Wii U, the PS4 can run multiple apps at once. While playing a game, you can load a web browser to check out walkthroughs or do some online reconnaissance.
PlayStation 4 games will be playable on Vita via Wi-Fi using Remote Play. It's not yet clear whether this applies to every single game or whether it's a game-by-game option that developers will need to activate, as is the case for PS3. All Sony has said so far is that "your favourite PS4 games" will feature Remote Play.
The PlayStation App is a new app that Sony will be releasing on iOS and Android devices, allowing you to use your smartphone or tablet as a second screen that acts as a map or lets you see how a friend is doing in that particular section of the game. It's a similar idea to Microsoft's SmartGlass and, of course, the Wii U GamePad.
It has been confirmed that the PS4 will NOT BLOCK pre-owned games. (Used games may need "online passes" to a certain extent to be able to play. So think of it as a "single player pass/full game pass" ala PC. - Not to divulge from pure facts though. This is speculation)Â
Network features
Digital titles purchased from the PlayStation Store can be played as they download. The system will download the first part of the game so you can start playing it quickly, then continue to download the rest of the game's assets in the background as you play. This also implies there will no longer be a need to install games as with the PS3.
While Sony isn't completely blocking anonymous usernames, it does want to let people play online with their real names, integrating their gaming with social networks such as Facebook.
Gaikai technology will let you instantly try out sections of any game on the PlayStation Store. While the way in which this happens isn't yet clear, it's likely it will come in the form of timed streaming demos, much like the OnLive console offers.
You can broadcast a live stream of your gameplay via Ustream, so that other gamers can see your progress.
If you're stuck in a game you can ask your friends to help you. This can either come in the form of text comments that will appear on the screen like notifications, or they can actually take over the game's controls and beat a section of the game for you.
The PlayStation 4 can be updated while the console is switched off, potentially putting an end to the dreaded lengthy firmware updates that annoyed PS3 owners.
The system does NOT require an always-online connection.
Playstation 4 will not play either retail or digital PS3 games natively. That means not only all of the PS3 discs you have will be redundant on the new consoles(so inform customers if they are trading in their PS3, then to trade all the games and controllers too) but sadly none of the downloadable games will be compatible. That means all of the classic games like Journey and Unfinished Swan wont be downloadable on the new console.
Sony have said that they could work through emulation software that could eventually be added to the system and also through Gaikaiâs streaming services, but nothing out of the gate
The DualShock 4 Controller
The controller features a touch pad on the front, similar to the rear touch pad on the PlayStation Vita. This is a capacitive touch pad (much like that on a phone), supporting two touches at once. This may be useful for mouse-like in control in games such as Diablo III (though it hasn't yet been confirmed if it'll use that control method).
A new "SHARE" button lets you add screenshots and gameplay footage to your Facebook feed. It's not yet clear how long captured videos can last.
An LED Light Bar, similar to the LED ball on the PlayStation Move, sits along the top of the DualShock 4. Much like the Move, it can change colour for various needs (player indicators, damage indicators etc). It can also be used for Move-like controls (see the PlayStation 4 Eye section below).
The Start and Select buttons have been scrapped in favour of a single Options button.
The controller's built-in speaker will let you hear additional sounds much like the Wii U GamePad. Alternatively, there's also a headphone jack which lets you hear these sounds in greater detail as well as friends' voices during chat.
Speaking of chat, the PS4 will come with a mono headset provided.
There's a new built-in sensor inside the pad which Sony promises will enable "highly sensitive motion control". Presumably this means the Sixaxis motion control has been improved.
The controller's existing buttons - most notably the dual analogue sticks and L2 and R2 buttons - have been redesigned in accordance with developers' wishes (and presumably those of the vocal gaming community).
Dual Shock 3 controllers will not work on the system.
 The PlayStation 4 Eye
The new PlayStation 4 Eye new camera, expected to be bundled with the system, appears to be Sony's answer to Kinect (which, in a sense, was Microsoft's response to the first EyeToy). It features two high-sensitivity 1280x800 cameras with wide-angle lenses and 85-degree diagonal angle views which, according to Sony, "can recognise the depth of space precisely".
Sony claims the camera can "cut out the image of the player from the background" or track their distance from the TV, allowing players to move their bodies to play. Players can also sign in with facial recognition.
The PlayStation 4 Eye also includes four microphones, allowing it to accurately detect sound and where it originated from.
Much like the previous Eye worked with the PlayStation Move, the new Eye tracks the LED Light Bar on the front of the DualShock 4 controller (like a more accurate Wii sensor bar), allowing for Move-style controls. With every PS4 owner potentially having Move-like controls instead of it being optional, this could have interesting connotations for upcoming games.
