3DS having “black screen of death” issues

Many consumers have just purchased the new and shiny 3DS, little did they know they would have to experience the “black screen of death!” This is one of the reasons I don't buy new products day one. In case there are problems or malfunctions with the device, you don't have to be the guine pig. Reports from NeoGaf, AVForums, and DigitalSpy are claiming instances of the freshly-christened “black screen of death” error requiring a hard reset of the system. Titles like Super Monkey Ball, Street Fighter IV 3D, Pilotwings, Ghost Recon, Lego Star Wars, and Mii applications have been victims to the error.

Bottom Line: Stay put, I'm sure more info regarding this issue will be out in a day or so.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Confirmed

Capcom has confirmed that the next offering of the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, is in development for the Ps3, 360, and the PC. Capcom promises that this next game will take the series in a new direction, with a style of gameplay completely new to the franchise. As a collaboration with the Vancouver-based Slant 6 Games, Operation Raccoon City will be a third-person team-based shooter, reinterpreting the events of Resident Evil 2 and 3.  You take on the role of an Umbrella Security Services soldier, and your setting and mission turn the events of the games into a triple threat involving you, opposing squads, and a third party made up of zombies and Bio-Organic Weapons.

It is September 1998 and the action centres once more on the ill-fated Raccoon City and the horrific consequences of the deadly T-virus outbreak from the Umbrella facility. With a cover up required, Umbrella orders an elite team into Raccoon City to destroy all evidence of the outbreak and eliminate any survivors. Hearing of this plan, the US Government dispatches its own special forces to uncover any evidence that exposes the cause of the viral infection and Umbrella's actions. Players take on the role of an Umbrella Security Services soldier (U.S.S.), competing alone or in four player co-op in a battle against all the competing forces at play in Raccoon City. Expect the return of original Resident Evil enemies, iconic landmarks such as the Raccoon City Police Department and fan favorite characters, including Leon S. Kennedy, who as a rookie police officer in Raccoon City is on your hit list to eliminate. Players will experience a retelling of classic moments from past titles Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 and watch the events unfolding from the menacing perspective of the Umbrella Security Service, giving fans the chance to rewrite the history of the Raccoon City outbreak.

The game also promises a wide variety of multiplayer modes, that will take advantage of the three-way conflict between the Umbrella Security Service, US Special Ops, and the many monsters (B.O.W's) that the series is known for.

Bottom Line: Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is expected for a winter release.

With Saints Row The Third coming out this fall, we still have a while to wait. To keep us occupied and exited Jonathan Schmidt, lead terrain artist for Saints Row: The Third, will give us a tour of the newly designed city. Bottom Line: With the last Grand Theft Auto being very serious, I strongly became interested in Saints Row 2. The easability of gameplay outperformed GTA4 in my mind. I'm very exited for this new title, and cant wait to see what it holds in store!

Game Industry creates Play For Japan

It's so wonderful to see everybody coming together and helping out Japan. The earthquake/tsunami has devastated thousands, and people are still missing. This tragic event is sad, and seems like something out of a movie. Apart from all this sadness, there is a bright side. The videogame industry is heavily tied with Japan, this is why Playforjapan was created. Play for Japan is an online charity designed to raise awareness and help fund the disaster overseas.

“The goal of Play For Japan is to aggregate and promote online auctions of items culled from the resources of its members – videogame rarities, art, signed games, etc. – in order to generate donations for disaster relief.”

On the site you will find rare collectibles that are for sale on Ebay, the money made from these sales will go directly American Red Cross, Global Giving, International Medical Corps, Save the Children, and UNICEF. If you wish to help, please spread the word check them out on:

Dead Island Logo Censored by ESRB

As you can see from the original logo below, the man who hung himself is supposed to spell out the letter "i." While some people dont really care so much for the cover art, ESRB certainly does. The new logo without the hung man (don't laugh) will be released in America, while the old logo will still go live in Europe.

The video game industry has set guidelines about the types of content that are appropriate in advertising and marketing materials, which includes game box art. According to those guidelines the depiction in the logo was not compliant.We never censor or dictate in any way what type of content can be included within a game. However, a game’s marketing materials are seen by an audience that is much broader than that which actually purchases the game itself, so we enforce industry-adopted guidelines as to what is suitable for inclusion in these materials. - ESRB

Bottom Line: This is totally understandable, and I agree. When kids go to any retailer, they will see the box cover art regardless if they can purchase the game or not. The decision does however take away the scary element on the island. The first logo makes us think that the island is so unbearable that people hang themselves.

Best Buy calls police on a guy waiting for Nintendo 3DS

Many people are very exited for the Nintendo 3DS launch, including this hardcore fanatic in New York. While waiting in line, Best Buy called the police on him for soliciting outside of the store. Once the NYPD got there, he argued that other people get in line for the iPhone and such, so how come he can't do the same for the 3DS. The cops told him to move, and get off the block. Later on he came back and tried to talk to the customer service inside the Best Buy. They told him that there are specific launch events through out the week, like the Chris Brown cd on Tuesday.  Therefore he has to get out of the line if hes not there for that specific item. The poor guy has been in line ever since Sunday, and finally today he finally got his long awaited gadget. Check out the video below, of his interview. Bottom Line: Racial profiling to the max, Haha just kidding!

Need For Speed Shift 2 Launch Video is Live!

EA has just released the official launch video for Need for Speed Shift 2: Unleashed. The video showcases surprisingly fast cars, and high review scores. Sarcasm aside, this video is not too creative EA. The game is set to release on March 29 in the US, March 31 in Europe, and April 1 in the UK for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. Rumor on the street is tha the soundtrack is not that bad either, lets just hope they didn't include Rebecca Black's Friday song. Check out the official website. Bottom Line: With Need For Speed Shift being a successful game, Shift 2 looks very promising. EA has done a good job of bringing back a dying franchise.

Pica-Pic brings back retro handheld games

This is probably the coolest and exiting thing we have seen in a while. Pica-Pic is a kick-ass website that allows you to play retro classics from your childhood. The site was creted by Hipopotamstudio, who are known for their amazing creativity. The website provide an easy navigation to choose your desired classic, and provides visual please as well! On a further note, we apologize for the lost productivity you are about to have. Check out the Pica-Pic. Bottom Line: Pica-Pic is an awesome website that allows you to visit your childhood and play retro handheld games.

Samsung Mobile CTIA press conference keynote Video

Samsung has officially released the GALAXY Tab 10.1, and GALAXY Tab 8.9. Both are fully loaded to enjoy the best multimedia experience. The tablets are both said to be "the thinnest and lightest large-screen tablet in the industry," over taking the iPad 2. With all these new tablets, the market will be flooded in 2011. Just can't wait to compare HP, Apple, Motorola, Samsung, HTC and others side by side. The sound of this video is pretty bad, and presentation is not the best either. Skip to 12 minutes, for the device itself. Bottom Line: Samsung Galaxy looks very promising, can't wait to try it out!

Gamestop hit all-time high sales in 2010

Gamestop keeps playing us and making more and more money! No hate for the used game reseller, but their business models is not that intelligent. Apart from contradicting myself, I have to show Gamestop some respect. They have hit an "all-time high" sales of $9.47 billion for the 2010 fiscal year (ending January 29, 2011,) leaving them a record net profit of $408 million. GameStop plans to "pursue opportunistic growth internationally," and keep "focusing on underserviced markets."

During the investors call, Gamestop mentioned that they would be shutting down over 200 stores due to overlapping. To do this they will use information on customer purchases extracted from from the PowerUp Rewards program. Understanding that they bought EB Games back in 2005, there are still stores next to each other. I know a mall where two Gamestops are within a 30 second walking distance. This is very embarrassing, and a waste of money on their part. One of the biggest surprises, is that Gamestop had a 61 percent increase in "console and PC digital offerings," which brought in $290 million during the year. With digital downloads spreading like wildfire, people expect Gamestop to slow down on their physical sales. One thing we can all agree on is that digital distribution is in our future. But them we won't be able to return the crappy games that we bought!

Bottom Line: Gamestop made over $9.47 billion in 2010. If you're a shareholder, I can bet that you're smiling right now.

Nintendo 3DS costs $101 to make

Many gamers plan to shell out $250 for new shiny Nintendo 3DS. Little did we know that Nintendo could probably manage to offer the device for $199 and still make a decent amount of money. Now, I'm not getting into pricing models, because we all know each company has a different strategy. Licensing, marketing, research and other charges are associated with a handheld device. Everybody has to make their share, and bring in some money. However, you can bet that Nintendo's pricing strategy is aimed to bring in profit from each device on day one.UBM TechInsights has done a teardown of the Nintendo 3DS, and has some surprising results. The Nintendo 3DS's total cost of the hardware is estimated to be around $101. This is $15 dollars more that the Nintendo DSi that went on sale in 2009. Don't forget a few new features likee the 3D screen, gyroscope, and other enhancements. Now that we know these details, we cannot complain. The Price is strategically set to compete with the iPod Touch and future Sony handheld NGP. Bottom Line: Nintendo 3DS costs $101 dollars to make.
