FanimeCon 2015
This post is a little late, but Fanime 2015 was amazing! I would say it was the second best anime convention experience I've had, only behind my first FanimeCon in 2011.
I had only decided to attend Fanime the Tuesday before Fanime (three days before Day 1), and I bought my badge the Wednesday before. I should not have even been able to attend because I definitely could not afford the convention. Alas, I bought a badge and told myself it would all be okay.
Day 1
This year was special because I drove myself, and some friends, to and from Fanime! I picked up Jewell and Nichil and drove an average of 83 mph down 280 all the way to San Jose. When we arrived in San Jose, we went to Safeway and picked up some groceries (sandwich materials) so that we wouldn't starve.
By the time we were done grocery shopping and parked, Micah hadn't gotten our hotel yet, so we had time to kill. Jewell and I attended a panel called "The Dark Side of Magical Girls." The panel was basically a survey of dark themes that are in magical girl anime, such as death and betrayal. It wasn't super deep or analytical (possibly due to the time limitation), but it was a nice introduction into answering *why* such themes exist in anime.
Afterwards, we moved into our hotel room: Sainte Claire 629, a beautiful top-floor room with a fridge! And then Jewell and I went to another panel: Pokemon Men Muscle-thon.
We played a game called Creamshot. And that's all I'm gonna say.
Afterwards, we ate dinner as a group. I got a huge a headache that didn't go away, so I decided not to drink that night. I didn't even stay up past 1:30am. I went to sleep so I could go all out on Day 2.
Day 2
On Day 2, I cosplayed as Serena.

I planned to spend more time walking around the convention, but that did not happen very much either. I spent most of my time at the Pokemon gathering. Since I didn't spend much time at the Pokemon gathering last year, I decided that I would not allow anything to get in my way of being part of the gathering this year. Afterwards, I was hungry for lunch.
The group and I ended up having a 3-hour lunch consisting of Pizza My Heart and Thirstea. We played the A-Z game with anime and video games. It was a lot harder than I anticipated it to be, but boy did it help pass the time.
By the time we got back to the room, I decided that I needed to just be at the convention center more. I didn't drop $75 just to play video games in my hotel room! So I went to the convention center and just sat in the lobby. I got to meet up with Vincent and Nicole!
Later that night, Jewell, Whitney, and I drank and went to the dance (or what everyone else calls a "rave" even though it isn't a rave.) It was a lot of fun! It was my first time ever drinking with Whitney (and Adila had a shot too!) And it was the first time I ever got to party with my Nookies. We're all growing up to become partiers oops
Day 3
On this day, I decided to just dress up cute. I spent some time in the artist alley, and spent time with Derek, Marvin, and Andrew. I also spent some time with Lauren near her hotel, just for funsies.
Afterwards, Jewell and I went to the Dojo to attend a Women's Self Defense workshop. It was my first time attending anything at the Dojo, and it was my first exposure to self defense ever. I'm so grateful FanimeCon provides such a workshop because there's a ton of people who do hit on women, and legally assault them. As much of an overall great community FanimeCon in, there are those people who continuously harass others like myself. Every time I was alone, I was always being hit on by at least one guy. There have been times where I was with someone and had people jump on me physically. FanimeCon is a scary place for a girl. So being able to a self-defense panel was honestly the best decision I made all weekend. Despite it being completely introductory, I learned a lot of skills that may be useful in the future. Hopefully I never have to utilize them, but sadly the odds are statistically not in my favor.
After that, Jewell and I naturally got hungry again and bought food and got boba--playing the A-Z game again. Then we decided to just spend some time in the hotel playing PT, and then later played Mah Jong. I learned how to play competitive Mah Jong and won a couple of times which was fun hehe.
Afterwards, more pre-gaming happened and more dancing happened. You know typical stuff. This time, I brought Cam to the dance. I never talked to Cam in high school, who was a freshman when I was a senior, but we bonded a lot over the weekend!
This night was certainly the best day of convention dancing I've ever had! I met a couple of guys who seemed like genuine down-to-earth chill people. They weren't trying to hit on me or anything--they were just sharing the same space. I met a few people who gave me a gloving show, which mesmerized me. There's just something about raves that make me feel high--even though I've never ever gotten high before in my life. I don't need to when EDM and pretty lights do it for me.
After Day 3 was essentially over, Day 4 was nonexistent. We moved out our lovely home of three days.
After having an extremely fun Fanime, I've realized just how important Fanime is to me, and how important it is that I go every year. There are some people who I only see at anime conventions, and I only go to one or two each year. And even then, sometimes I don't get to meet up with everyone I want to.
So this year, since I had literally only enough money to pay for food and parking, I made it a goal to actually spend time with my convention friends. I didn't realize how many people I have met, and how many of them have grown to actually mean something in my life. They aren't just acquaintances I see (although many of them are simply just that), but many of them are people I can actually converse with and be real with.
Yes, Fanime is expensive. Yes, I know deep down I should not go because I know I can't afford it. But it's also extremely important to me, and honestly, I think spending that $75 was worth it. I took complete advantage of my access to panels, workshops, the dance, gaming hall, and the artist alley and dealer's hall for the two times I went there. And when I wasn't taking advantage of my badge, I was providing that opportunity to another person in my group--someone else who also could not afford Fanime.
It sound so lame that an anime convention is truly important to me, but it is. Every year I attend FanimeCon, I grow in some way or another. FanimeCon has helped reduce my shyness and has brought out an extroverted side of me that only comes out during conventions--especially when I'm in cosplay. FanimeCon has helped me branch out into other realms of art and hobbies that I would have never previously been exposed--even if I don't end up adopting them myself. I've made so many friends and have learned a lot about myself over the past 5 years at FanimeCon. It's truly a magical experience, year after year.
