Bigg’s killer whale T065A2 He is currently at a stage in his growth where we refer to him as a “sprouter”. This phase of growth often occours in their early teens, and is characterized by a rapid growth in the dorsal fin. It is not possible to distinguish between male and female killer whales when viewing their dorsals when they are juveniles (the only way to know for sure is if you get a lucky breach photo showing their ventral side and genital slit), leading in many cases to a not know the gender of a given whale for many years. But once the tell-tale signs of sprouting start to happen, it then becomes clear that the whale is indeed a male, who’s fin will continue to grow until their late teens (approx) and can reach a height of 6feet in some cases.

If all goes well, T065A2 here will grow bigger and bigger, taking advantage of the bounty to be found in the waters of coastal BC.
