PUMPKIN!
The cherry tomatoes are finally coming good. We've had a lot of rain lately, causing us to lose about 30% to splitting, but there's been so many it hasn't mattered. Here I managed to half fill the large container, and since we already have a full bowl in the fridge, I gave them to my mother and grandmother.
I needed more cherry tomatoes for my salad than what was currently in the house, so I went and picked a few more. Now I have too many!
We lost a lot of tomatoes recently due to three days of heavy rain, causing lots of the ripening fruits to split. But as you can see, the cherries are so plentiful it doesn't bother me much. And yes, my feline friend came out to help me.
Love the colours of cherry tomatoes ripening.
Pumpkins! Adorably cute little pumpkins!
The tomatoes have really been struggling this year, despite having nine plants in. An abundance of caterpillars, rats and two different diseases have combined to take a hefty toll. Plus two of my stakes have snapped in strong winds.
So these represent the first actual harvest. The four at the back are the appropriately named 'mortgage lifter' variety, and the two little ones at the front are 'tigerella'. The big one on the left is 575g!
The cucumber... is a bit overdone. I told my housemate it needed harvesting a full week ago, but she forgot. It's probably quite bitter now. Not my problem though: I don't eat cucumber anyway!
More freshly harvested zucchini. I can't believe how fast they grow!
The first zucchini! I've been a bit slack this season, usually forgetting to check for newly opened female flowers. This one ended up being fertilised mid-afternoon, so I wasn't sure it would take -but it clearly has!
The second cucumber. Hidden away at the back of the plant, I didn't realise it was growing through the mesh! I grabbed a knife to cut the mesh off, but in the end I was able to pull it away. The cucumber will probably keep it's strange indentations.
Prolific zucchinis!
Cherry tomatoes!
The first cucumber!
Spent some time out in the crazy wind today, staking the tomatoes again. They grow so fast!
The last beetroot for the season, finally harvested. Yes, it's a white beetroot (I grew a mixed variety, so some were red, some were white).
Tiny baby zucchinis! (Aka courgettes.)
Big juicy strawberries. So much more delicious than store bought, and almost effortless.
Spent the morning mowing in and around the main garden. Still plenty of weeding to be done, but hey, progress.
