All for a shopping mall. Ink on paper 2017
A large scale ink drawing created during a residency in Shanghai. Drawn from memory and recounting how places exist in the mind. It explores the impact of humanity on the natural landscape, a story which relates to everyone across the globe, but on a larger scale in China. A capitalist explosion, with a gigantic abstract shopping mall as a modern day religious monument, reminiscent of a human brain dominating the landscape. Bold lines represent borders and barriers as human-made concepts rather than physical entities, which segregate people and control movements. These same lines also offer a glint of hope as phone lines and messy cables symbolise the inter-connectivity and curiosity of people.
