Been rewatching clips of season two for an AMV and I keep thinking back to when Assad said Armand respected Claudia because I genuinely think he did. Armand comes off to me as a person who might not compliment you yourself a lot but will praise you to other people.
Armand compliments her killing, remarking that it’s a shame her body is not equal to her, but still seeing the viciousness in her.
Armand praises Claudia again, telling Louis that she’s far better at blocking her thoughts than him.
The reason Armand spared Louis in the sewers scene is because he could see how much Louis loved Claudia.
I will die on the hill of the reason Armand came to hate Claudia is because he saw so much of himself in her. Armand’s whole thing in the beginning was that Claudia would go mad because of the age she was turned at(think of all the vampires he’s seen burn themselves over the centuries). But I feel like some of that was personal projection on Armand’s part. Louis described Armand as, “a boy masquerading as a gentleman.” Definitely think this is meant to clue into the fact that mentally, Armand isn’t that much older than Claudia was physically. Those two were opposite sides of the same coin.
This could even be why he made Claudia play a role that he knew would wound her so deeply. Armand was expected to stand perfectly still for hours upon when he was Amadeo posing for portraits, he had to dress up too. Except while he was posing Claudia was singing and dancing, both were performing. In Armand’s mind, life is all about waking up and doing shit you don’t want to do. If you aren’t willing to do that, then there’s no point in you ever waking up. I think Armand saw Amadeo in Claudia, and since Amadeo suffered he figures Claudia needs the same “discipline” he was given by Marius.
Amadeo and Claudia were both lost and seeking homes. Amadeo, while surrounded by nice and lavish things, really wasn’t treated any better than he was in the brothel with Marius. So when Armand saw how happy Claudia was, he tried to mold her into her own Armand. Because Amadeos don’t survive in the world, Armands do. Plus, in Armand’s mind, 20 minutes a night is nothing compared to the horrors he was put through on a daily. In Armand’s mind, he probably thought he was being lax. Marius would literally beat and whip Armand, so to him this is nothing, in five decades she’ll have a new role and she’ll be fine.
Two ways Lestat and Armand were similar is that they both saw far too much of themselves in Claudia, decided to treat Claudia the way they thought their inner child needed to be treated, and saw her as competition for Louis.
