John Delancey Gray Scale Portrait

This is my most recent demonstration for my illustration students. I chose John Delancey as "Q" from Star Trek because of those riveting eyes. We work with grayscale markers, black and white color pencils, and white gouache or acrylic.

A five hour render tonight with markers, color pencil, and white acrylic. For all those who are neurodivergent-that which makes you different is just your super power. As Ollivander in Harry Potter said "the wand picks the wizard."

Pixel Weather: "Morning Brew"

For all those who need that first cup of java in the morning before anything else can happen this illustration of a storm brewing in the morning as a cup of hot coffee steams should strike a chord.

Pixel Weather: "Heading North From St. Johns"

This grand white oak stands over a pasture north of St. Johns Michigan as you drive north toward Mt. Pleasant.

Pixel Weather: "Slowing Tempo in Gray and Gold"

The question for me is can you find something timeless in the familiar. Andrew Wyeth studied his subjects until he could distill them down to the essential idea. This is an actual farm along M-57. I have driven past it on so many late afternoons. In "Slowing Tempo in Gray and Gold" the daylight is waning, convection slowing, and the cumulus clouds flattening into gray slabs. I have photographed these farms at 60 miles per hour for over 20 years knowing there were paintings hiding in these scenes.

One of the original works that was the genesis of my Pixel Weather style in 2024.

Pixel Weather: "Empires of the Sky"

The midwest is unmatched for dramatic skies. These empires of the sky rise up in the afternoons in summer to frame the farmland landscape with mountains of vapor. This is a real farmhouse and barn along M-57. Simple clean lines, well kept, no frills except when nature puts on a show.

Pixel Weather: Three Silver Silos

I wanted to create classic summer rural Michigan scene with verdant trees and a line of cumulus clouds building in the distance.

Pixel Weather: White Out

M-57 is a straight east west track of perfectly flat farmland in mid Michigan. The wind in winter can blow the snow across the fields for thousands of feet creating a kind of white fog near the ground, and it is cold. I have passed this barn many times at all times of year and its silhouette always catches my eye.

Pixel Weather: Faded Glory

This is composite of many aging red barns I have passed by in Michigan and an archetype of the form. Placing the barn in a late winter scene where the snow is heavy and wet and the thaw creates puddles just seemed to create the right mood.

Starting the 2026 season with digital studies for this year's landscape paintings. This concept is based on one of my road pictures taken while traveling across the M-57 corridor in the center of Michigan. The images capture the rhythm of the road driving through this washboard flat landscape.

The power of violet to create a mood in a landscape scene is always interesting. This was an experiment in a cool violet to magenta color palette to conjure a winter scene.

Edward Hopper meets 8-bit style. There is an elegance in the simplicity of this farm landscape dotted with plain tidy bungalows and carefully cropped lawns. I want to capture this unassuming world of farms and fields.

Dry wheat fields and little rain in late August. Each artwork is an experiment in a different color palette.

"Silent Night Barn Owl"

The barn owl has a ghostly look. I am struck by how streamlined the body is and how easily they remain in in the shadows.

"Silent Night Canadian Goose"

I had to take on this ubiquitous water fowl taking off from a a pond late at night under a full moon. I often hear geese taking off and landing at a nearby lake and honking as they fly invisible against a clear midnight sky on a winter night.
