I’m Gary Banksy

I’m 30-something I make zines and collage, sometimes I post words that mean something or nothing. I like making things that feel a little weird. I want people to look at what I make and remember that they can make things too. Creativity isn’t precious, it’s human.

I think about dreaming a lot. I know people say listening to dreams is boring or whatever but I think they’re actually so insightful.

What are you dreaming of?

Uneven progress

Falling into the creator trap, making new things without finishing the old ones; worrying if any of them are worth the time spent anyway. Well, little lady, they’re none worth anything if you don’t finish them.

Have you heard about the phenomenon where you tell people your goals and so your brain thinks you did the thing, because you talked about doing it, so you don’t actually do the thing? Anyway, I think that disproportionately affects me, and so I don’t talk about my goals. (This does not mean I actually accomplish them when I don’t talk about them)

I try to remember that all art is valuable, even just the act of sitting down and getting something out of your brain and onto paper, into song, physical being; that’s the most important thing to me.

(I don’t want to eat and eat and never be full of all the things I consume; I want to regurgitate all the good things I consume and observe into something someone else can consume and regurgitate.)

I’m so forgiving to other people’s art and creativity, why can’t I do that for myself? Why do I think my work is so precious that it must be perfect and hold up to the most intense scrutiny?

If I preach kindness above all I must be kind to myself. Goddamnit, babies, you’ve got to be kind.

All my friends are feeling weird, worried and wiggly. All my friends are buzzing out.

Maybe thirty minutes of practice is good even if it’s all trash and dog shit. Draw what u see, even if it’s just shapes.

RIP Alex chilton, u sure could write a song about being in love for the first time.

The texture of the paper I made makes superfine details impossible, but it loves to take color and the surface lets you imagine little details that emerge naturally which, maybe, is better than forcing the details.

Maybe you can’t expect smoothness. Maybe the texture influences the outcome. What is joy without sorrow? What is perfection without flaw?

I made a teeny tiny sketchbook from the paper I made yesterday. It’s rough but it’s got so much character. I know a lot of good things, people, places, like that. I bet you do too.

It’s Saturday and I’m making paper. Not in the financial sense, that’s absolutely beyond me; but in the crafty ‘I’m going to do it the hard way’ way.

I’d like to make a ton of paper and maybe make some sketchbooks. In the same way a doodle feels more accomplished if you take it a step further (embroidering it somewhere, making it a stamp, printing it in a zine) making your own paper kind of makes whatever you put on it feel more special. Like you worked harder for it. Because you did.

Practicing oils and sketchbook work. I gotta do something real with these animals, they exist.

Some of my zines will be at Biggest Little Zine Fair in Long Beach, CA on May 31st. I won’t, but they will and you can look at them and buy them if you are there, too.

I’m still a little off, not motivated, a touch stagnant; but we’re working though it. I have big dreams and a spiteful heart that won’t give up. That’s ok. I hope you do too.
