(He opens the jar, placing the net down.)

Right, where’s the stool—oh, there.

(He sets the stool down, pulling a piece of cardboard from his pocket, and standing on the stool.)

(He prods the spider with the cardboard —it’s slow and arduous, and even harder to control where the spider moves — but easier for him, he doesn’t have to wrestle with the curtain as well. He guides it to the bathroom wall and off the curtain.)

Janice, this is going to suck. But then, I’m going to take you home, and set you on dad, and we’re both going to be incredibly happy.

(He waits for a second. Another second. He feels the spider watching him. Then the jar comes quickly over the spider and he quickly slides the cardboard underneath the jar to trap it.)

(he flips the jar over, the cardboard still covering it.)

Pass me the lid, will you?

(Eggy is wary and silent the entire time, allowing Gary to go through the process unbothered and raising an eyebrow when he mentions that he'll put the spider on dad)

(Kyle hands the lid to him, humming as he does so, and lets loose a sigh of relief when the spider is secured)

Then you take a tissue paper and sneakily grab it. Or, like, if you have any sort of thing to hit it with, and then you kind of pull it towards you and go all ham on that thing. But hitting it is more for ones without wings. Does it have wings? Oh, but if it’s like, a beetle, that’s harmless. You just slide a piece of paper under it and hurriedly put it in a potted plant or something.

(Gary’s hands dig into the fabric of his shorts, his knuckles white.)

(Eggy's eyes are wide at the situation, blinking in surprise the whole time. He's quiet for the moment, before pulling up a chair and taking a seat, nodding slightly)

Sit with me, mate.

First if all, those 'friends' are cunts. Consent is important in everything, yeah? They should respect that. Peer pressure is a thing. Also- I'm sorry, you rolled off a hill? No wonder you look so fucked up, mate. You need more than an icepack, and I might need to take you to a clinic, see if you fractured anything...

(He trails off, lost in thought for a second, and runs a hand through his hair, avoiding eye contact)

I mean, it's definitely possible they saw me at a pub. Things are... Complicated. But I need you to listen to me, yeah? You're not like dad. So, you're angry, or you run your mouth. You're a teenager, for fuck's sake. I was like that when I was a kid, too, y'know? Just like you. You're not gonna turn out like 'im, and, 'ell, you're already showin' more restraint then 'e ever 'as. And you know how much harm 'e's done. I trust that you won't go down that path.

(Gary lets out a breath he didn’t know he was holding, his hands trembling in the fabric of his shorts.)

I-I thought you’d be angrier.

(Gary stares quietly at his lap, trying to ignore the sting in his eyes, wholly avoiding his brother’s stare.)

…you…don’t have to answer me.

but…does it feel good to drink?

is it…like, forgetting things?

(Kyle shakes his head, patting Gary on the back)

Hey, I'm not gonna be angry 'bout this. I'm your older brother, yeah? 's my job to help you through this, and I wanna help.

(he hums, expression going serious for a moment)

Drinking is... Different for everyone, mate. For most people, drinking 'elps numb things, yeah? Others drink it to let loose. It... Breaks a barrier, in your mind, yeah? Weakens your restraint. So for people like dad, it stops him from having to be responsible. Numbs 'im, but makes 'im an angrier person.

Not the same for all people, though. I have a friend who doesn't drink in bars, says their brain gets heavy. Told me that they're fully there, in that time, just physically... Sludgy, they said.

Gotta remember, though, it does come with a price. 'ell, I've had my own fair share of 'angovers.

(his voice becomes bitter, serious)

I can't be too sure of what dad thinks, if I'm bein' 'onest. Don't wanna, either. 'e made 'is choices.

(Gary stares silently at his lap, his head hung low, trying to make it seem as if he isn’t crying. Attempting to hide his face.)

S-sometimes I want to forget.

(He wipes his face and hiccups.)

I don’t want to be a-angry all the time. It—it’s all—Everything hurts. It’s all—sore.

(Eggy's heart breaks as he hears his little brother speak, and an intense rage begins to bubble up in his gut. Not towards Gary - never towards his brother - but rage towards their father. God, Gary deserved a better childhood than this. And Eggy was trying his best to raise him, but it wasn't SUPPOSED to be his job to raise him, it was supposed to be his dad's, and... Eggy wishes that he could've been a better brother. To have fully been able to shield Gar from the childhood KYLE had, to continue to silently take every hit so his siblings would be safe.)

(Kyle's throat tightens, breath growing uneven, and he pulls his little brother into a hug, quietly, holding the back of Gary's head as he cried.)

Yeah.

(Eggy's voice is gruff, and he's unable to hold back the grief in his tone.)

I know what that feels like.

(Gary can’t do anything but cry. His shoulders shake as he clings onto his brother’s shirt, hiccuping through violent sobs. Somewhere in between them is “I’m sorry” and “I’m so stupid, Eggy”, but sounds and words blend into each other and they don’t make sense. He feels awful. Everywhere. His body aches. His eyes sting. His fingers are numb. Every bruise makes itself more prominent as he feels his body tense less with every release of a sob. He’s tired. He’s angry. His ribs hurt somewhere, and he can’t tell if it’s a stitch with the hiccuping breaths, or if he’d actually fractured something. He doesn’t know. It’s all awful. He can’t tell dad anything. He can’t tell Jessie anything, because she comes and goes and she deserves space, but Kyle—Eggy keeps coming back. Eggy comes back and STAYS. He stays even when he could leave. He stays even if there’s no peace found here. Eggy stays because he’s the only one who’s left to care for him and Sally. Gary is terrifyingly aware of that fact. Gary knows Eggy would never blame him for any of it—his immense anger, his running, dirty, bastard little mouth — but it doesn’t stop him from hating himself for everything.)

F-fuck, Eggy, it literally fucking—hurts…like i need a doctor hurt, Eggy.

(Eventually, he lets go of Eggy’s shirt while his sobs quietly subside, tears still streaming down his face. He makes a weak effort to wipe them with his sleeve.)

Everything feels so fucked up.

(Gary's apologies are met with a barrage of "it's not your fault"s from Eggy, tears pricking the older brother's eyes and eventually spilling as he grieves the childhood they could never have, and the childhood that Kyle couldn't protect his brother from. Dad's drunkenness, Mum's death, the abuse... Even as a kid, Kyle swore to himself that he'd do his utmost best to protect his younger siblings from this life)

(And every passing day, Eggy is reminded of how his best isn't enough.)

(The squesze loosens as soon as Gary makes an attempt to pull away, and Eggy uses the back of his hand to wipe moisture from his eyes, undoubtedly leaving them red and slightly puffy.)

Yeah, no, we definitely need to get you to a doctor. I... I know things feel fucked up right now, aight? But... I'm gonna be here for you, yeah? I hope you know that.

(Eggy was about to leave it at that, but his throat tightened as he saw the look in Gary's eyes. A look he was all too familiar with, one that he saw in the mirror. Self-loathing. He couldn't bear to think that his little brother would feel that way about himself)

Hey, look at me. It's not your fault, alright? None of it is. You didn't ask for this, and it sure as hell ain't your fault. There's nothin' wrong with you. Nothin'. Capisce?

(Gary nods. He doesn’t feel it, but he nods. He doesn’t know how to feel better. Maybe if he tries to keep telling it to himself, he’ll believe it. Maybe.)

We’re so fucked up, Eggy.

(He wipes snot from his nose.)

Like, fucking…mental fucked up.

(Eggy snorts, letting out a choked laugh as he pushes the heels of his hands into his eyes, shaking slightly)

You 'ave no idea, mate. But we'll make it, yeah? We've got eachother. You, me, Sally, Jessie, whenever she's around, yeah? We've got eachother.

(Gary nods, letting out some weak sound between a laugh and a sob.)

…yeah.

(He sniffles for a little while, before feeling himself together.)

(His voice is weak, but the conviction behind his words is true.)
