I really wonder at what point - and why - domesticated cats developed different pupils than wild cats.

Yes, I do – the difference in eyes is more a large/small thing than a wild/domestic thing… here are some small wild cats

Studies have found a variety of contributing factors for animals that have vertical pupils; animals with this style of eye tend to be predators (slit pupils in prey animals are often horizontal instead) be ambush hunters be close to the ground, small or short operate in a wide variety of lighting conditions, midday, dusk, midnight, dawn

Most small cats experience most or all of these factors, most big cats only experience one or two. The factor most important in determining vertical slit pupils seems to be size, which may have to do with the type of prey associated - the eyesight best suited to catching a mouse is not the eyesight best suited to catching a deer; one of these things makes small scurrying movements and then freezes hidden by almost any amount of cover, the other is large and likely to run a good distance very fast all at once.
