You Are Not Immune To Charles' Eyeliner
guys i miss him
i love that dbd acknowledges that edwin and charles have 30+ years of "noodle incidents" to confuse crystal with. imagine the gang is looking through old cases for info they think might be useful and its just:
edwin: check the case of the courthouse
charles: was that the one where we got arrested or the one where we got married?
crystal: im sorry- what?!
edwin: no, the courthouse was the one where you tried to receive your own life insurance
crystal: nonono backtrack a second- when were you two going to tell me about this
charles: ok technically we didn't get married, lewis and gina turner did, but-
crystal: im not talking about that
crystal: im talking about edwin having a criminal record
-two days later-
crystal: wait you tried to get your own life insurance
edwin: he got in a rather embarrassing argument with a receptionist over the issue
charles: its why im not allowed to be the woman anymore
edwin: indeed, we used to play the stationary game for the role
crystal: i have so many questions but lets start with this, the stationary game??
charles: rock paper scissors
love how not a single person thought the pink sparkles crystal and niko saw were from anything other than homosexuality because falling in love at first sight with the girl that you live with is just about the most on the nose sapphic experience in existence
I want CK in s2 hanging around at Dead Boy Detectives office but contributing nothing to the case and just chilling in his cat form
story time with edwin
I hope they solve my case when I die.
we need a season 2 because edwin deserves to be absolutely insufferable about having survived hell twice
i did a thing. i wanted to draw niko in 1910s clothes, but then i was like what if i switch them places w the boys. so, the 1910s niko and 1980s crystal
niko is switched places with edwin, she was sent to a boarding school after her father dies, where she somehow meets her end. i was thinking the same thing as with edwin, except she is sacrificed to the dandelion sprites and she isnt saved in this au
i dont have much notes on crystal but i like to think she's still the mean bitch who hurts people to avoid hurting herself before she dies. probably dies because of something stupid she did, too. she is definitely hurting when she meets niko, but meeting her really helps her in a lot of ways and they solve crime now ever since 1989
theyre in love in case that isnt obvious
note that i am in no way good in research so the outfits probably arent extremely accurate, but they do look neat enough for me, so thatll have to do
Dead Boy Detectives is a stunning series
'You really gave up a potentially tranquil eternity for your friend?'
DEAD BOY DETECTIVES 1.07 "The Case of the Very Long Stairway"
This has probably been said.
But.
The major symptom of entering the last stages of hypothermia - the symptom that should really scare the shit out of you if you are ever cold - is . . . feeling warm again.
Charles hasn't previously done the paradoxical undressing that can come from this (he's actually done a very smart thing, it just wasn't enough, in that he has removed the soaking wet outer layers he was in and replaced them with a dry outer layer - the blanket - it's just that as he was already hypothermic when he got to his refuge it isn't going to be enough, because his body isn't generating enough heat to be worth it); but that's where that comes from.
At the end of death from cold, you feel warm, and you feel tired. At the end of death from blood loss, you just feel weak and tired. At a guess, I would honestly expect the hypothermia to have been the decisive kicker - the ME wouldn't be able to determine that, as after the fact it's just clear that both were a factor, but mostly, if you're already dangerously cold, losing any blood volume is going to make that much worse, since your circulatory system is also a core component of your heating and/or cooling system - so much so that while not a core treatment, body-temperature saline is a significant supportive treatment for hypothermia in hospital, and chilled saline is a major effective treatment for hyperthermia.
So losing any blood volume out of that system - where it keeps getting pulled through your veins and distributed properly - is just . . . gonna make you die of hypothermia even faster.
The point is.
Charles starts his interaction with Edwin probably feeling the worst he has ever felt. This boy steps out of the darkness with a lantern when he feels the pain, and the cold, and the way that the cold is just another pain, and on top of that the betrayal and the anger and the fear and everything else, are their worst.
His reassurance is maybe a bit awkward, but it's still . . . light, and reassurance, and someone else, and a distraction from how much he hurts and how nauseated he probably feels (abdominal bleeding tends to make you feel sick), and then it's a whole new world to think about, ghosts and afterlife and the differences between now and 1916, and all of it is a great distraction and eventually it clearly reaches a point where Charles is having difficulty focusing and just feels very tired, because we see him curled up in as much of a nest as he could make and Edwin reading to him.
That's the point, at the very least, that he would have started feeling warm again. Maybe it was even before that - maybe that's why he figured maybe he could sleep, because the pain had faded (hard to actually sense it when you're dying/dissociating that much) and he felt a bit warmer and Edwin discovered the old magazine and offered to read.
I am extremely sure, among other things, that nobody had read to Charles, for years. That's the kind of thing parents do with very small boys, if they're lucky. It would become baby-ish very quickly after the age of five or so; the implications are his mum was pretty great, but given his dad and the implication that the things that were supposed to make his dad happy were things like "good at sports" (aka a properly masculine pursuit), I doubt she would have been allowed to keep reading to him much after that even if he liked it.
The thing is?
What this means is that Charles experienced dying, his actual moment of death, was of feeling better, and finally being warm, and someone reading him a story - an act of care and affection, and one it's plausible to imagine hadn't been his since he was a kid, and his mum could make the entire world safe.
Over the course of their first meeting Edwin, and what Edwin did, and Edwin's choices, took Charles from the absolutely torturous worst part of his life . . . to closing sleepy eyes in what felt like warmth and the comfort of someone reading a story.
Which Edwin did for a stranger, at both huge effort and, Charles discovers shortly, risk to himself, just . . . because he couldn't leave someone alone in that misery.
Charles remembers his death as a moment of comfort and of the beginning of love, whatever kind it may be, because of what Edwin did. And that is a pretty fucking neat trick.
(It's also not inconsistent with even the angriest-hissiest-wet-scared-cat!Edwin we see in S1 - the thing that Edwin is always very rigid about is that the cases must be ones that only they can solve. There's just flatly too much misery in the world otherwise, too many things that need fixing - but there also exist these things where if they don't do it, nobody will.
This is why he's fine with taking Crystal's case initially, but also - beyond his other discomforts - why he insists she is not their problem anymore once the demon is gone: while there are limited resources out there to get a demon out of a psychic, there are all kinds of resources comparatively whose job it is to deal with Living Teenage Girls Who Are Lost. This is no longer their problem! This is someone else's problem.
It's also why he switches from dubious/resentful about the little girl's case to fixated on it the moment they know what Esther is - the police don't know how to deal with a fucking witch. Now he knows that if they don't fix it, it will never get fixed.
But it's very easy to get fooled by the hostile boundaries he has up for self protection; indeed, they're honestly supposed to fool you, because if you know how deeply he cares about shit you'll be able to use it to manipulate him exactly like Charles does so successfully†, and then he's fucked.)
[†I'm not saying it's BAD manipulation. To some extent all human social interaction is manipulation. I'm just saying it gives a massive opening.]
niko found the cat king!
I've seen a lot of talk about how hell affected Edwin's pain tolerance, but not very much breaking down how it seems to have affected the way he manages emotion. So to that end, here we go:
Edwin Payne vs emotions (and how his no good very bad helltime messed with him something awful)
Dead Boy Detectives does a very good job early on of establishing the fact that Edwin is not particularly good with people. He's stilted, he's repressed, and though he can be incredibly kind to the people he cares about, he can also be quite abrasive, particularly to those he doesn't know well.
Time and time again, we see Charles step in to be the face man. Charles is the one to greet the clients, to take note of their names, to set them at ease. Charles is the one to support Crystal emotionally, and his interactions with Edwin seem to imply that he's done the same for Edwin, over the years. Charles has to remind Edwin to mind his bedside manner, and he explains to Crystal that Edwin forgets how to talk to people sometimes, because of how long he spent in hell.
In short, these boys compensate for each other's strengths and weaknesses in a lot of ways, and Charles is very much the one doing the emotional heavy lifting in this partnership.
And there's a reason for that, laid out in the text and subtext all throughout the show, and the narrative handles it brilliantly.
Edwin's actor does a fantastic job in expressing the character's reactions – or rather, lack of them. Because in the most shocking scenes throughout the show, Edwin often doesn't seem as horrified as the others in the face of events that ought to be horrific. In the Devlin house, he seems as though the murders scarcely affect him. When the jumper at the top of the lighthouse throws herself down, he's downright composed in comparison to everyone else.
And Edwin repeatedly shows or expresses that emotion makes him uncomfortable. When Crystal and Charles are fighting in episode five, he requests that they set their feelings aside until the case is finished. At the end of the episode, he says that the day has been entirely too full of emotions for his taste.
So, what is it specifically about emotion that bothers him so much?
In hell, emotion meant an awful, bloody death.
Panicking over potential incoming horrors? Nope, sorry, too loud. Dead again. Having a sobbing breakdown in a corner? Nope, sorry, too loud. Injured and trying to keep it down so it doesn't get worse? Nope, sorry, that's too loud, too.
Again and again, we see Edwin trying to tamp down on his emotions, but also, tellingly, trying to keep his emotions subdued and quiet.
When Charles finds him in hell, he's crying without making a single sound. When Esther starts to torture him in episode eight, he doesn't scream at first. He's trained himself out of making noise when something hurts or frightens him.
Of course he wants to set emotions aside until the case is done. He's spent seventy years learning what happens if you don't. You take care of business first. If, and only if, there's an after? That's when you let yourself feel.
Early on, when Edwin and Charles need to find the correct book but Edwin is unable to access their office due to the Cat King's bracelet, Edwin is upset. He's frustrated and out of sorts, blocked from making progress on the thing he knows he needs to be doing – hurting himself trying to get his arm through the mirror until Charles stops him. It's Charles who has to step in and help him calm down. It's Charles who has to remind him to breathe through what is very likely a panicked throwback to those times when if he could not solve his way out of a problem, it would very literally get him killed. In this scene, we get a brief glimpse of how Edwin looks when he starts to lose his grip on his rigid control.
And that's before we even get to these things:
Because as awful as the doll spider was, it wasn't the only thing skulking around the Doll House. Charles stumbles across misery wraiths when he goes to rescue Edwin from hell – and we know from the Devlin house episode that Edwin is extremely aware of what they do and how they operate. They were in his space, looking for despair to feed off during a time when he had it in spades.
Taken all together? It's an absolutely heartbreaking picture.
This boy seemed a little socially awkward before his death, from what we see of his time before hell. But afterward? He's had seventy long years of having to teach himself to regulate his own emotions, under pain of excruciating torture if he didn't do it well enough.
With an object lesson like that, over and over again, for literal decades, it's no wonder that Edwin has such a hard time navigating emotions and everything surrounding them.
I love that in most shows the father figure is a random middle aged dude and then in Dead Boy Detectives it’s a goth lesbian butcher
