Are you actually arguing that scientists trying to understand something only want to know so they can eliminate it? Is that really something you believe? Or, is it just that you know for a fact that research isn’t going to say what you want it to say, and so you’re trying to prevent the research from happening by demonizing knowledge and understanding?

This, this is what I’m talking about when I say cult ideology is rampant in liberal circles. The idea that knowledge is inherently evil is a tool that almost every cult uses to control people, and scientists have been treated as evil for long before the concept of eugenics existed. Knowledge can be used for bad things, yes. That doesn’t mean that seeking knowledge is a bad thing, and claiming that wanting to know, wanting to understand, is eugenics, is absolutely disgusting.

Moreover, this concept instantly paints a divide that is used to manipulate people into believing that everyone who wants knowledge wants them dead- or more to the point, that anyone who isn’t you, given the capability, would kill them. That’s just not true. The idea that the world is out to get you like that is fueled by paranoia or manipulation, and only breeds hate.

In short, OP, this ideology has got to stop. Now.

Maybe when transphobia, homophobia, and ableism are eliminated then we might not need to be so cautious, but not until then.

Again, that’s not saying that knowledge is inherently evil, and I cannot believe that you honestly think it is. I am a scientist. I believe in knowledge for knowledge’s sake. But part of being a good scientist is being socially conscious and aware of how certain knowledge can be abused.

you can say “they’re either gay or bi.” You don’t need the phrase -at least- because that does imply it’s a lesser sexuality or “less gay” than gay/lesbian. Bisexuality is its own independent sexuality. It’s not a scale, it’s not a mid way range. It’s a full identity that exists outside of its relation to gayness or straightness.

this is an article about Alvaro Pascual-Leone’s neurology study at Harvard Medical. it’s actually almost a decade old at this point. in this study, he had a group play a simple piano exercise for one week, and he had another group only imagine playing the piano exercise for one week. in group one - the piano-practicing group - a new network of neurons blossomed in the brain to accompany the repetitive motion practiced on the piano. in the group that only imagined playing, the same thing happened.

the brain can and does form new neural connections when you only imagine something, even if you take no action. it doesn’t mean that everyone who’s ever had a bad thought is now a criminal, but this is a legitimate study that suggests that a concentrated, sustained effort – like a hobby, or writing, or shipping – results in real, measurable structural changes in your brain. you shouldn’t even need a study like this to prove “you resemble what you surround yourself with,” but here it is.

As a landlord, I have one condo that I rent out, who, like so many, has become unexpectedly unemployed with no chance of work, how do people purposes I pay my mortgage when my savings run out? People hating on landlords during this whole thing is so tired. No one forced any tenant to sign a lease. The rent amount and lease term are clearly stated. If someone feels they will be incapable of paying the stated rent for the whole lease term, they ought not sign the lease. It’s not a question of consistent investment revenue for the landlord despite all market forces, it’s a question of someone keeping the promises they made. People sign leases (and contracts in general) because situations often arise where one party or another is incapable or unwilling to follow-through on what they agreed to. They are meant to protect tenants from landlords who don’t properly maintain their properties and landlords from tenants who cause damage or don’t pay their rent. Both parties have remedies when the other falls short of their commitment.

Now, if a landlord, out of an act of charity, wishes to give a tenant an extension or wants to forgive one or several month’s rent when a tenant falls on hard times, that is wonderful and laudable. But people need to understand that is indeed an act of charity; it is not owed to the tenant nor can it be demanded in justice. The landlord is well within his rights under the lease both parties agreed to to seek a remedy due to the tenant’s inability or unwillingness to make good on his promises which may or may not include eviction. Some people may ask why the landlord did not build any savings to cover his expenses for several months, but one could very easily ask the same question of the tenant; why must only the landlord plan ahead for possible hard times?

That all being said, any landlord who is financially capable of offering a tenant a break until things get going again should be encouraged and thanked for doing so. Forgiving someone’s rent is charity. Stop questioning people’s intelligence or morality for expecting someone else to follow-through on their promises.

How are people living paycheck to paycheck supposed to save enough for a fucking pandemic? No one was expecting the majority of retail or food service folks to lose their jobs all at once. Planning for that is just not feasible.

It’s not a fair an equitable relationship here, you “choose” to sign the lease because for a lot of folks it is rent or be homeless. It’s pay exorbitant amount for rent (minimum is 950$ for a single bedroom in my city), or live on the street and be criminalized for existing as a homeless person.

Not to mention being forced to live outside in the elements, with potential of freezing to death or getting heat stroke depending on the season. It’s not exactly a free choice to rent. It’s coerced by market forces, and those with the least amount of power don’t have a lot of bargaining power to make their contract better.

Understanding extenuating circumstances should be the standard, forgiveness should be the standard, what you call CHARITY should be the standard.

We are not even living in standard times, we are living in times of crisis. Global crisis. Everyone is getting hit hard right now, no one is exempt from this. People shouldn’t be terrified after losing their jobs, possibly losing family members, possibly getting very sick themselves, that they will be forced into the streets and into the elements where they can infect and be infected by others during a global pandemic. This isn’t…. normal circumstances, you don’t just puddle along the status quo in a crisis.

Isn’t it better to find a way to keep a good tenant through this crisis than try to find a new one when you can’t even meet them face to face to judge if they’re any good?

(I’m not against help for landlords, especially small ones, if they need help paying their mortgage because nobody plans for a high percentage of their tenants suddenly being unable to pay, but…at the same time we need to pull together on this).
