Thinking about freshman Jack and Shitty struggling to feel like they belong at Samwell but for different reasons.... phew!

YEAH MAN YEAH!!!! for a while I've had this hc that during high school Shitty was one of those kids that was 'friends' with everyone but didn't have any actual close friends? like he was invited to every party but never had anyone to talk to there? but he was really good at setting other people up to be friends bc he knew everyone!

and he gets to Samwell and kind of expects more of the same, he's friends with everyone on the team and in his classes, but at the end of the day he doesn't have any close friends or a best friend, yknow?

but he sees Jack, so alone and standoffish, and he's like "okay, new mission: find this kid some friends!" but the more him and Jack talk about classes and hockey, they start spending more and more time together until they're basically attached at the hip, to the point that Shitty forgets about his original plan to find other friends for Jack.

and one day after wrestling over some dumb shit, when they're both laughing on the floor of Jack's dorm, completely out of breath, Jack turns to him and says something like "Thanks for being, like, the best friend I've ever had" and Shitty realizes they're friends!!! Best Friends!!!

and Shitty just feels so heard for the first time in his life because no one has ever listened to his rambles about feminism or hockey but Jack does!! and he responds!! and he argues back!! and he listens to Jack's rambles about history and photography!!

and they both know how it feels to grow up away from home, to have insane family legacies to live up to, and they just understand each other's shit in a way no one else does!!!

and they're best friends!! they love and understand and see each other!!!!

Ooh ok, I've never really thought about trans Dex before but here goes!

-When Dex was little he always copied his older brother and didn't realize until later that it was because he wanted to be a boy like his brother was

-When Dex is about 6 he asks if he can get a short hair cut and wear boy clothes and his parents are thrilled because short hair means he'll stop get sticks tangled in his hair and wearing boy clothes means he can just start wearing his brother's hand-me-downs which saves them money

-Preteen Dex starts to clue into the fact that he's actually a boy and not just a tomboy so he starts spending time learning his uncles' "masculine" trades to try and be more manly

-Dex starts transitioning right before high school because his family is moving to a new town and that means he can be on the boy's hockey team and go by Will and he can start high school as a boy

-Dex's uncles don't really get the whole transgender thing but they also don't really care because it's easy enough to start calling him Will and they care more about the fact that Will is their only nephew who's any good at appliance repair, or construction, or lobster fishing

-Dex goes to Samwell because of the 1 in 4 but his plan is to only tell the people who absolutely have to know that he's trans, and then he meets Shitty Knight, who kind of scares him at first because he knows "too much", and he's pretty private and standoffish at first because he doesn't want people getting too close

-By senior year though, Dex has finally found enough safety and comfort that he's a lot more open about his experiences because he knows that his team and his friends only want to know about him because they care about him

Whiskey (grew up wealthy) and Kent (grew up poor) figuring out how to raise a kid together is just a series of baffled reactions to the other saying "well that's how my parents did it"

I MEANT TO ANSWER THIS THE SECOND YOU SENT IT AND THEN I FELL ASLEEP BUT THIS IS FROM WHEN @trashynishiki WERE YELLING ABOUT HOW PARSE IS POOR ANYWAY

like their kids is two and Whiskey's like "we should start applying to schools for kindergaten" and Kent is like ???? "he'll go to the one in our school district???" and Whiskey, who went to private school from pre-k through high school is equally confused because "what do you mean you can just register, you don't have to do an interview???" and Kent loses his mind over the fact that they would interview a three year old.

Or like Kent's cooking very much reflects the fact that he grew up without money, he hardly ever buys fresh produce, because frozen vegetables are fine and they're less likely to go to waste and he still can't stand the idea of accidentally letting food rot in the fridge. Whiskey'll be like "oh we're out of tomatoes? I'll go buy some before dinner" and Kent, who grocery shops once every two weeks realizes for the first time that he doesn't have to wait for "pay day" to go shopping because that's just not how his life works anymore.

Or Kent will get a container and put it in the shower while the water heats up and then use that to water the plants because that's what his mom did.

Or when their kid's a little bit older Whiskey has the "20 bucks for every A on your report card policy" because that's just what his dad did with him.

Or Kent is obsessive about looking into scholarships when their kid is in high school, because oh fuck he wants to go to college and how will they afford that??? His mom had jumped for joy when he decided to play in the CHL because it meant that he'd either make it to the NHL or they'd pay for his school afterwards so obviously they need to find some way to put their own kid through school... and Whiskey's like "the money that we have... that's how we'll put him through school" and oh fuck right, yeah, we're okay.

And Whiskey's not a dick about any of it, he's trying and just genuinely confused when Kent talks about how expensive formula is and seems a little panicky about it until he remembers that he's not 14 and trying to scrape together four years worth of saved up birthday money to get new skates anymore. And Kent's not a dick about it either, there's some teasing, but they're both just trying to understand each other and work together, like with everything else they do together.
