I think part of the whole "gen z doesn't know how to work" thing is actually that many of the younger ones have very limited goal oriented interactions with boomers until they get to the workplace and then have no idea how to work around them. Their Gen X parents/teachers were not like super well emotionally regulated but generally were pretty consistent between what they said they wanted people to do and what they wanted people to do, didn't have complete meltdowns if asked follow-up questions. Then they get to the workplace and have these boomer bosses who want something very specific but have no idea what that specific thing is or what it would entail, could never clearly explain it, but also think it is very important that they see you do specific things that often have no relation to successfully completing whatever work actually needs to be done or what they asked people to do.
