There was this post from a few years ago about this woman who started working at the same company as her husband, but it never came up that they were married cause they were in dif depts, and so they would hang out at lunch and be very friendly with each other because - you know- they’re married, but their coworkers started to suspect them of having an affair with eachother and judging them for it until someone had the nerve to bring it up to one of them.

Random Headcanon: The bit where character A walks into a room and finds character B entangled in some utterly ludicrous situation, and after a long, awkward pause, B calmly states “okay, I can explain” is a popular trope in both human and Vulcan comedy, albeit for totally different reasons.

One of the major genres of Vulcan comedy consists of long, complicated explanations or debates establishing that something absurd is, though a series of unlikely contrivances, actually perfectly logical. The moment of comedic catharsis arrives when the audience realises that some seemingly innocuous assumption they’d made about what’s going on is wildly incorrect.

With yet another round of discourse about T’Pring on my dash, I think I figured out why T'Pring hate bothers me so much. I was asking myself honestly if I get defensive of her because I personally like her as a character, but I actually think that’s not it at all. There’s plenty of killing in Star Trek—even Jim and Spock have killed people to achieve their ends. All of that’s forgiven in a typical way: “Oh this is just fantasy, we can have slightly altered moral standards.” But for some reason, T’Pring gets so much more hate than most villains, as well as HEROES who have also been willing to sacrifice pretty much anything, sentient life included, for a higher purpose. So why is it TOTALLY UNFORGIVABLE that T'Pring did what she had to do to preserve her bodily autonomy? It’s because all she had to do was have sex. People feel that because she could have solved Spock’s problem by simply having sex with him, it was unforgivable to put his life at risk. The protection of her body is just never going to be important enough to justify taking a life, even in the relaxed morality of a fantasy. ESPECIALLY a male life. There’s something about the DOMESTICITY of her betrayal, the fact that she is rejecting a man, that makes fans hate her on another level entirely. The reality is that some objectives in this fictional universe are considered important enough to justify the murder of imaginary men. But a woman’s autonomy apparently isn’t one of them.

I feel like its worth noting that Star Trek didn’t become what it is thanks to the writers/producer/creators. Gene Roddenberry wasn’t a saint, he said and did some pretty sexist and horrible stuff. Rick Berman, Brannon Braga, JJ Abrams, and Bob Orci definitely aren’t much better.

Star Trek became what it is because of the actors, because of people like Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, Deforest Kelly, Nichelle Nichols, Gates Mcfadden, Marina Sirtis, Patrick Stewart, Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, Wil Weaton, Avery Brooks, Terry Farrell, Nana Visitor, Alexander Siddig, Kate Mulgrew, Garret Wang, and Jeri Ryan.

And people like Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, and Doug Jung have been continuing that legacy the others left behind. And from what I’ve already heard about the discovery cast, I think this is going to continue on for a while.
