Here we see a a desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) hatching from its egg at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Western Ecological Research Center located in Sacramento, California. 

The desert tortoise is a federally listed threatened species only found in the Mojave Desert. Young ones like the little guy pictured above are especially prone to predators like dogs and ravens, whose numbers can increase around areas of human activity and structures. 

Adult tortoises can be killed by car traffic, ingesting trash, and wildfires, and are affected by loss of habitat from urban and industrial development, cutting short their potential lifespan of 100 years.

Palette Earth Fran Gormley

Gormley is particularly interested in exploring photography’s shifting relationship to painting and sculpture. Her focus is on capturing the dreamlike point at which reality becomes abstraction. Gormley’s one-of-a-kind large-scale photographs immortalize the hidden beauty in the otherworldly landscapes from her unique perspective thousands of feet above the earth. Her work provides intimate glimpses of the earth’s palette in remote parts of Ethiopia and Iceland.

Reflective 3 Carlo Brandelli

Titled ‘Reflective 3’, the project’s inception was a familiar architectural blueprint: ‘It’s partly a homage to the paper pattern’, he explains of the cartamodello that is also the backbone of his Savile Row atelier. This Florentine work leads on from ‘Reflective 1’, a film project with photographer Nick Knight for Kilgour’s rebirth, and 'Reflective 2’, which set the scene for an earlier brand campaign.

The Fourth Wall: Stages Klaus Frahm

“The Fourth Wall” is a concept in dramatic theory, often used by actors to signify the invisible stage wall where the audience is seated to view the play. The stage is classically perceived from the audience’s perspective, where they are able to glimpse the action through a “window” into the set—"The Fourth Wall.“

In this series, the direction of the viewpoint is opposite: we take the perspective of the actor. The camera is far behind the iron curtain.

It is the camera’s specific perspective, dissolving the traditional order, which questions the hierarchy of the stage and audience. For the French philosopher Lacan, an image is a gaze pointing outward, as the light-points send out rays to the viewer. In other words, the image looks at the onlooker.

Here, the space reserved for the audience becomes flat, like a postcard, and the real space of the theater, the stage, is explored in many directions. The camera looks up, taking note of the scaffolding and lighting structures: the mechanics of the space. Thus, we become aware of a workspace hidden behind the red velvet curtain. The contrast between backstage machinery and the sea of velvet seats is exciting.

Amazing Transparent Church in Borgloon, Belgium

The architect group, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, built this church in Borgloon, Belgium. It doesn’t look like anything special… from certain angles. From other angles, the structure reveals itself to be something else entirely.It consists of 100 layers of stacked steel, that are equidistantly staggered in a way that illusively change in appearance based on where the viewer is standing.

The median household income in the United States is about $52,000. So go ahead and picture a median-income household. What did you picture? Did you picture a 25-year-old with a decent job who’s maybe worried about student loans but is basically doing okay? Or did you picture a married pair of 45-year-olds who are both full-time workers stuck in kinda crappy jobs? Or did you picture a married couple with one full-time worker and one stay-at-home mom? Or a 65-year-old retiree whose $2.5 million stock portfolio yields him $52,000 a year in dividend income? These people are all in very different situations. But household income says they are all the same. In fact, it says they are all typical households earning the US median household income.

Cabin in the Forest Tomek Michalski 

The vision of the place to clear one’s head targeted at the individuals who need rest, seclusion from other people, the world and daily life. A cold, misty forest in the context of a warm space of seclusion is supposed to help and shape character, as well as invoke emotions and willingness to ponder. Both the building itself and the interiors will be designed to affect the flora and fauna as little as possible.
