Update

Okay, so, I know there hasn’t been much info about Geek Before Chic, and I’m sorry to those who have been looking forward to it. I went on vacation, back to Texas about two and a half months ago, was there for a month and a half, and then after getting back to Washington, I totally went head on with a bunch of stuff, and Geek Before Chic has sort of been on the back burner. 

But, it’s summer now, and after this week, I will hopefully be in a better place to focus on my YouTube stuff. I have a bunch of ideas, not just for Geek Before Chic, but also with some music stuff that I would love to share with you all. And then, in the next month or so, I should be moving into a new house, and after that I can really start getting into my YouTubing career. X3

Do you know what I hate??

When I was growing up any time my brother upset/hurt/was rude to or downright nasty to me I was told “he’s just doing it to get a rise out of you” “he’s just doing it to annoy you”

Like??? I know?? I know he’s being mean to upset me. I know he’s saying horrible stuff to annoy me. And guess what?? I’m annoyed!!!!

I was literally told not to be upset, because his intentions were to upset me????

How is that not upsetting? Especially to a young girl??

It sounds to me like they phrased it poorly. A proper way to phrase it would be:

‘He’s doing it to get a rise out of you. He’s being obnoxious and if you don’t let him get to you he’ll just feel like an idiot. I’m sorry, but just bear with it for a bit; if we intervened he’d just do it again when we’re not around or even if we are because he wants attention. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to deal with people like that every now and then.’

I'm gonna tell y'all a little story. Once upon a time, I worked for the student government at the school that I go to. And there was this guy named Jeff, who was a 30 year old cis white male. He bullied me endlessly, constantly telling me that I was worthless, and my opinions were worthless. I tried going to the school, but since he wasn't doing anything illegal (just imoral), there was nothing they could do. I spent all quarter trying to fight the school and the system, and he continued to bully me, and even ocasdionaly my friends. It made me feel so bad, I was loosing sleep, and not doing well in my classes. After the quarter, I was asked to go on required leave, because my grades sucked so badly. Nobody cared to ask why that had happened. Nobody cared to see if I was okay. Nobody cared. And now I'm not on track to graduate when I originally wanted to, because I have to leave for three quarters. All because I was being bullied by some dumb boy...

30 black students were kicked out of a Donald Trump rally for standing silently

According to the Des Moines Register, security said they were acting on Trump’s orders to remove the students, who were standing silently atop bleachers at the event. Trump’s campaign is denying the order. In video of their ejection, the students give a valid reason for their presence.

Things womanhood is not

Womanhood is not inherently connected to male-dominant societies’ ideas of what women should be (i.e., societal ideas of femininity). A woman who is extremely gender non-conforming is no less a woman than one who is gender-conforming.

Womanhood is not a specific set of personality traits (gentle, self-sacrificing, nurturing, irrational, vain, shallow). A woman with fewer of the “feminine” personality traits is no less a woman than one who has more.

Womanhood is not inherently connected to any set of talents (language, childcare, cooking) or the lack thereof (math, sports, auto repair). A woman who excels in “masculine” fields and has less ability in “feminine” skills is no less a woman than one who is the opposite.

Womanhood is not weakness. A woman who is muscular and/or displays her strength in ways that her society does not view as “feminine” is no less a woman than one who is/does not.

Hey guys, again. I just wanted to put my channel out there again. I’m a female gamer who does commentary on various video games while playing. I tend to like horror but I also am doing Happy Wheels and The Sims 4 and such. I’ve been posting videos pretty frequently and I assume to keep doing that unless I get really busy with finishing up school. I put a lot of effort into my videos and it’s hard to get started when no one knows you. If you could take a look at some of my videos or if you’re not the gaming type I’d appreciate this being reblogged so others can see. 😊

Rant: Female Gamers

I don’t brag or tell anyone I game because the assumption is that you’re only a “gamer” if you play big name fps. I love playing indie games, classics and their remakes or sequels, and well, anything I’m in the mood for. Yes, I have played big name games like Destiny and Fallout but I’m not any less of a gamer because I don’t play CoD or because I didn’t preorder what everyone else is waiting to be released. We all have different tastes. I like to be different and play under rated games. Some of them hold my attention or turn out better than any mainstream game I’ve played. That’s why there’s such a wide variety of games for everyone to partake and enjoy. Some people are just competitive assholes. They’ve turned video games into a sour high school gym class. -C.K.L. Black History Month -- Support Black YouTube Creators.

It is well-documented that Black people face bias on a consistent level in all fields. YouTube is no different. And a lot of this has to do with YouTube FANS succumbing to their own subconscious biases and only subscribing to people who look like them. 

Tumblr has a strong Black community that is supportive of #BlackExcellence, #BlackGirlMagic, #BlackLivesMatter, #BlackoutDay etc., and it is free and takes just SECONDS to subscribe to a YouTube channel. You want to support Black businesses? Support Black YouTubers. That shit is a job. It takes hours/days to edit and promote a 3 minute video. There are tons of great channels of all races and ethnicities and genders and sexuality, but if we can have a moment of honesty, mediocre white channels still can experience explosive growth where that is simply not possible for Black channels–until now.

I’m imploring you (regardless of race) to SHARE this post and SUBSCRIBE to every channel therein. You don’t necessarily have to like or watch any of their videos, but you probably will and that’s great! But know that BRAND DEALS (read: THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS) go to creators with high subscriber counts, and we as a group have been disadvantaged since the beginning of the platform. 

You lose NOTHING by subscribing to the channels here, but you will be making it possible for hundreds of talented (or at least relatively driven) Black creators to be seen by brands that are only looking at numbers. Help even the playing field!

Absolutely! Anyone who believes that women should be equal to men is technically Feminist however some shy away from the word as they feel it has negative connotations and I have to admit, I used to be one of those people! I was scared to identify as a Feminist because I didn’t want to be associated with the minority of people who believe that feminism is bringing men down rather than raising women up. Now I see that believing that women are equal and should be treated as equal to men is Feminism!

Geek Before Chic GoFundMe Campaign

Hello Internet!

So, yeah, for those of you all who don't know me (and I'm fairly certain that that is all of you), my name is Molly, and some of my friends and I are planning on creating an awesome YouTube channel called Geek Before Chic.

This is stemming from a Independent Learning Contract that I am planning on doing with some of my friends in Spring Quarter of this school year called Geek Before Chic; A Feminist's Perspective of The Geek/Gaming Culture. Long story short, we will be studying about the history of feminism, and it's connection to the geek / gaming culture. We will be showing what we have learned through various types of creative videos, such as skits / parodies, let's play videos, videos about definitions about certain words / ideas, and many more.

Personally, this project / channel is really important for me to start; I have been dealing with a lot of harassment lately at the school that I attend, and even worse, nothing is being done about it. Gaming and comics have been my only way of getting through it. I have also been watching a lot of YouTube videos, and while there are a lot of good channels out there, most, if not all, of the predominantly famous ones seem to be very male centered. And to me, that doesn't seem fair. So, of course, I'm going to do something about it. Hopefully by creating this channel, my friends and I will be able to create a safe sort of space for gammers & geeks who identify as female / non-binary.  Of course, doing this requires a lot of equipment, and that's where this GoFundMe campaign is going to help. my friends and I are planning on using the money we get from this, to purchase two game capturing devices, a green screen kit, a camcorder, a couple of microphones,  a couple of gaming headsets & computer mice, and some video editing software.  Thanks so much for checking this out, and hopefully you can donate; I know We're asking for a lot, but every little bit adds up, so if you can donate just $5, that would be awesome! Let’s get started!!!

Today, November 18th, 2015 (I know, technically I posted this on November 19th, but humor me, okay?), should be a day to go down in history. 

Why, you may ask? 

Because Geek Before Chic was officially birthed on this day... 

Okay, so wtf does that mean? 

Well, I (Molly) officially decided to start a YouTube channel, that focused on geek culture (including, but not limited to, gaming, comics, etc.); I know, I know, that's something that has been done 1,00 times, what makes Geek Before Chic different? Well, GbC is specifically designed a space where female identified people can come, and feel comfortable talking about geeky stuff (whatever you all want to do). 

Well, who are you to say that that space needs to be created? 

Well, as someone who has identified as female for her whole life, and as some who has identified as a geek for most of her life (and someone who has recently gotten into serious gaming), I think I very much have a right to create a space like this, especially since there doesn’t really seem to be one already. 

OK. So, What prompted you to create this channel? 

Well, that’s a long story, that might need to be told in it’s own separate post, but the short version of it is that I am feeling like where I am currently, there is no safe space for female geeks and gamers to come together, and share their experiences in a comfortable environment. So, that’s exactly what I’m creating. 

Cool! What are some things we can look forward to on your channel? 

Well, I have a few ideas on what I would like to get out of this channel / blog, but I am always willing to hear suggestions of what kind of videos you all want to see. I’m willing to do videos on gaming, comics, or maybe just feminist issues in general. Really, I’m down for whatever you all want to see!
