Unions are why you have 5 day, 40 hour full-time work weeks. Unions are why they have to pay you in actual dollars instead of “company credits” that you can only spend at the company-owned stores. Unions are why there are fucking fire exits at your place of work. Unions are why it’s not okay for your supermarket ground beef to be any percentage human.

You think your company pays you out of the goodness of their hearts? Or even out of “market pressure?” The “job market” is a myth perpetuated by the capitalists. Corporations would pay you nothing if they could get away with it. And you argue “oh, but if they paid me nothing I’d just go to another one.” Wrong. Because to maximize profits, they all want to pay you nothing. Corporations exist to maximize profits while reducing risk for investors. It’s part of their entire function to find ways to cut costs as much as possible, and that includes finding ways to pay you nothing.

Unions are your defense against that. You think all a union does is strike? If you pay union dues, a lot of that is spent on lobbyists in various governments reminding your lawmakers that you have rights as a living human being that a corporation should not be able to stomp all over. Unions hire lawyers so that if you’re fired for bullshit reasons, the union can stand up for you against your boss. They’re called unions because workers are uniting to pool resources so that they can stand up to these corporate overlords with more money than God. Unions exist because you might not have the words, resources, or time to fight workplace injustices all by yourself. That’s the whole fucking point.

And if a business shuts down because a union is striking, it’s because the business was abusing people and didn’t deserve to be in business anyway. Don’t make excuses for the corporations. They already have trillions of dollars and a couple million lawyers to do that for themselves. They don’t need your help.

A lot of union folk very literally fought and died for the workers’ rights we have today. Like no joke, bosses would hire goons to straight-up murder unionizing and striking workers.

All the most basic workers’ rights we have today were all paid for in blood. And conservatives have never stopped trying to take them all away again.

OKAY BUT WAIT. This has happened to me. Recently. Because I am old and I have things out there from previous fandoms with previous pseuds and one day my teenager begins a rant at me about people never finishing any WIPs on the pit of voles (which he does not call the pit of voles because he has No Knowledge of such a thing but yet he still reads on which I didn’t think anyone did any longer) and he points out an example to me of something I WROTE AND LEFT WIPing for ages and he has NO IDEA #1 that his mom wrote this and #2 How much it still haunts me to this day that it will. sit. there. for. eternity. because I am too lazy to pull it down.

Another disc for my collection of your fave and mine Walerian Borowczyk! Is it Arthouse? Is it Nunsploitation? Is it soft porn? A little of all of the above to be honest.

Behind Convent Walls is the first Borowczyk I ever saw, not that I'd have been aware of the director's name back then in the early 80s when some Art School friends and I were drawn into the cinema by the allure of the "Sexy Nun" on the poster (as seen here). We were callow youths and I was not yet the refined, virtuous Cinephile you know today. We knew that these "foreign" films held the promise of mucky stuff and perhaps even the possibility of seeing some naked ladies ("It's called The Tit and the Moon! There's gotta be at least one title in it!") With Behind Convent Walls Mr Borowczyk did not disappoint.

I've rewatched the film a couple of times in recent years via "the internet" and it always seemed oddly edited and the picture quality was disappointing so I'm very intrigued to see how Arrow's transfer looks (2k restoration from the original camera negative), however I won't get a chance to watch it before Sunday, as God intended.

Missing A Blogging Community https://geekosaur.com/post/missing-a-blogging-community/ I kinda miss the days I was on Blogger/Blogspot. Used to have one blog for comics, and another for random geek stuff. It was nice how, specially on the comics blog, we had a nice little community of small blogs, and just kept commenting on each other blogs. I know there's still this on Wordpress, but for some reason I was not able to get the same connection folks had on blogspot. Maybe it's a platform thing, or culture? The comics blog was for Disney and Brazilian comics, in Portuguese, and on Wordpress it was mostly anime. But I'm not sure if it's just that the blogs I commented on were "bigger", or just more focused on posting than being a community. Of course, I have basically been using this blog here as a place to dump some updates, and haven't been much involved. Will try to be more involved in some community from now on. Geekosaur News 33: Addicted to a TV show, starting new manga, Disney new TCG https://geekosaur.com/post/geekosaur-news-33/ TV # After I finished From on Paramount+, I started Evil and... kinda got addicted to it? In less than a week I'm already halfway though season 2. That's very unlike me. embed I'm feeling like I should be watching Schmigadoon! so it hopefully gets renewed for a season 3 but... I just wanna keep watching Evil. On another note, Silo is going to start streaming on AppleTV May 5th, and I'm really excited for it. I loved the first 2 books so much! Maybe I'll finally start the last book in the trilogy. Manga # I started 2 new manga on Shonen Jump: Tenmaku Cinema and Gokurakugai. I didn't get much invested in Tenmaku Cinema, but let's see how it goes. I'll probably read until chapter 4 or 5, and then decide if I'm following it. Gokurakugai had an interesting first chapter, and the second was still good enough. Will catch up - there are 7 available now - and see if I'm still interested. Apart from that, haven't been reading much manga this past week or 2. But I wanna catch up to Nagatoro, and then go back to One Piece, maybe read the next arc/saga: Whole Cake Island. Games # I was not aware, but Disney is releasing a TCG called Lorcana, which should be competing with Magic, Pokemon, etc. I'm not fan of Disney as a company but... c'mon, I just need that Robin Hood card. The cards look great, and I guess one of the advantages is that the game is likely going to be way simpler than what Magic turned out to be. I just hope it doesn't end up being kinda ruined by an adult fanbase like Pokemon. Maybe my wife will be interested and this is something we could play together.
