Harry and Larry’s death scene in Ruthless Route TS! Underswap is as masterful as it is tragic.
Harry (left) and Larry (right) are two cartoonishly evil henchman of an equally cartoonishly evil Baron. Larry is the muscle, while Harry is the “brains”.
They’re both somewhat dumb, and have playful back and forth while they mess around and annoy/bar your path in an average playthrough.
They’re comedic characters who’re meant to be seen only in a comedic light.
This all changes during the game’s Ruthless Route.
This is TS! Underswap’s version of the genocide Route, and the scariest thing is that these characters… don’t change.
While the rest of the underground is locking themselves in their homes or evacuating to safe houses, Harry and Larry keep on doing their “evil” shenanigans.
Even after they’re warned by sans (their “rival”) that the main character is an actual threat and that they should genuinely run away, they just… don’t.
This all comes to a head in the final confrontation you have with them.
In the normal route, a passageway is blocked off by Larry struggling to push a piano. A funny gag, and nothing really more.
But in Ruthless, it becomes horrifying. Harry is desperately trying to make Larry push harder, because Chara keeps getting closer, and closer, and closer…
Eventually, they do get the piano out of the way, and retreat up a large cliffside. You are told multiple times that you DO NOT HAVE TO KILL THEM.
Out of any possible escape routes and no way of calling for help, they fight you. Scared and unsure, they try to defend themselves.
As you lower one of the Goon’s hp, the other heals them. Then, you get an idea…
Harry is distraught. His best friend is just… gone. Dead. He can’t live anymore.
Throughout the whole battle, both of the goons are spareable,
Harry cannot be spared in any way.
You simply have to kill him.
Harry and Larry are comedy characters, trapped in a horror story. They were doomed from the beginning.
