Week 2: Genre Analysis : Iconography
Audience: In America, gun control is a very sensitive subject in the eyes of society. As we see headlines daily, guns and gun control are a subject every citizen has an opinion about. Moms demand action is an organization in support of stronger gun laws. With that being said this propaganda is intended to attract audiences who are borderline in their decision of gun control laws attracting people to favor against it.
Purpose: The purpose of this advertisement is to inform the viewer the opinions of the advocate group Moms demand action. This image suggests the American government has mixed priorities in the sense of gun laws. We can infer that laws regarding child obesity in public schools are more structured than gun control laws.
Ethos: In advertisements such as this credibility is immediately determined by the way viewers recognize your organizations name. Moms demand action is a fairly known group against gun sense laws.
Logos: The logic we could clearly see in this photo is the association of children in a classroom with a gun. In this persuasive photograph we could clearly see that a child should not be holding an automatic weapon and that a child holding a chocolate egg is not as dangerous, which criticizes legislation.
Pathos: The way this photograph plays into pathos has the same general ideas as in logos. The way this emotionally affects the view is the lighting in the photo making the children stand out, showing what each child has in their hands: an automatic weapon and a chocolate egg. This is intended to leave a mark on the viewer stating in the eyes of the government a chocolate egg is more threatening that an assault weapon.
