As the clock ticked by and the trickling rain refused to cease, Lukas was beginning to become increasingly anxious. It was beginning to become late - the afternoon quickly melting into the early evening as water pounded upon the pavement outside.

He’d decided to seek refuge from the rain inside, sprawled across a plush couch within the library as he bided his time doing nothing more than gazing out the window with a glazed expression on his face. It felt as if he’d been there for hours, his body starting to feel rather numb as he lay in static. The only change in his surroundings had been the few people who had come and go from the other side of the coach, and it appeared that someone new had just appeared.

She sat down next to him and looked out the window as the rain hit it from outside. For a few moments she sat in silence, listening to the sound of rain hitting the building, the sounds of college students flipping pages in their books, and the hushed whispers echoing in the library, but she couldn’t take it any longer.

She turned her head to look at the male and smiled, “my name is Amelia F. Jones. Second year.”

Yet another outburst shattered the gentle lull of silence that had befallen the library and Lukas was once again forced to acknowledge the other student’s presence. She was blonde, blonde, blonde and unapologetically cheerful, her peppy tone leaving Lukas confused - how could anyone be happy when the weather was just so…depressing? 

For a moment he considered giving her a false name, fabricating a personality from the faint scratches of television he knew, but that would, well, that would make him stand out too much. And if there was anything he didn’t want to do, it was stand out.

“…Lukas. Masters. Second year.”

“Hey, we’re the same year!” She chuckled, “I figured you’d be in your final year of college. At least now it won’t be so awkward,” at least that’s what she hoped. “What are you studying? It must be important if you’re getting a masters degree.”

Amelia had been inside the library doing some homework when the rain struck. At first she didn’t mind since it gave her even more reason to stay inside the building to finish her homework, but now that she was done she was getting annoyed. It seemed the rain would never stop. She thought about reading some books to pass the time, but after hours of reading law books she rather sit in silence and watch the rain.

It seemed though that option was also met with a roadblock. A roadblock in the form of another college student taking up the couch. “Hey,” she poked his cheek, “can you sit up, please? I want to sit down.”

With a wordless sigh, he pulled his legs to his chest, slouching across the couch arm. As ‘interesting’ as company could be, he had been hoping for his last few hours spent waiting for the weather to let up would be spent in solitude. There was something about the way the rain drawled down the frosting windows that begged for moments alone, husked breathes over a bitterly boiling coffee, and the surrounding sound of silence ringing through the chiming air.

But, of course, silence and solitude were hard to come-by in a University. Every second of every moment was filled with scurrying students sweating over a deadline of some sort, rushing and hoping to make it to class on time, just this once.

“Oh, thanks!” She took the crystal from his hand and put it back in her short’s pocket, “it must have slipped out.”

“I mostly play basketball, but I like to play any sport. It’s a very relaxing way to clear ones mind,” she smirked, “I could face you in football. Unless you’re afraid of losing to a girl.” She stuck her tongue out.

"Amelia Jones goes right then left," she quickly ran up behind the young man and jumped on him, "and she goes a tackle! The crowd goes wild!" She smiled at him and kissed his cheek, "hey, cousin~"

Alfred laughed, his glasses going crooked as he scooped his cousin up. His arms still wrapped around her waist, he lowered her back down to the floor, grinning easily, “Hey! How’ve you been?”

She smiled, “sure, it’s on you. I’ll also have you pay for my coffee as well.” She stuck her tongue out before walking on. She felt relieved that the topic was changed. She didn’t want to think about things like that. She just wanted to enjoy her time with her cousin.

“Remember that time when we were little we raced around the house to see who was faster, but then we bumped into someone and got egg salad everywhere?” She chuckled, “mom was so mad, but after awhile she calmed down and laughed too.”

"I like your twintails," she commented before giving a light tug to one of them.

“Ouch-” Alice winced and slapped the other’s hand away, “just because you like them, doesn’t mean you have to touch!”

“Or maybe someone you read the book with was cute, the teacher, or maybe a character in the book,” she pointed out.

Her smile widen. She thought Alice would run away screaming, but she was still there and wanted to keep talking, “nah. I just dug around until I found some. I didn’t have a jar with me like I usually do, so I put them in my short pockets,” she shrugged, “I have to wash them anyway.”

She put the mess down on the table, “a test. I always show girls worms to see if we can be friends. When I was little my mom wanted me to act like a lady, so I did the opposite of what girls my age did to scare them off, until one day a girl actually didn’t run away screaming. We’re still friends now! It’s the perfect way to tell who’s your friends and who isn’t, in my opinion.”

“Ah… I’ll think on that, yes.” She isn’t going to admit anything.

“Oh, I see,” Alice eye balls the worms, “that’s an interesting way to see who your friends are- but my, I garden all the time. worms are useful and they hardly a bother. The poor dears go about their work while I do mine,” still a lady was everything that Alice was. Nice. Proper. WAIT. FRIENDS?

“I appreciate the gesture, by the way.“

“Do you have a garden here?” She asked, “I’d like to see it one day. I might not be into flowers, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like looking at them.” 

She smiled, “well, I guess since you didn’t run off, you might be my new friend. Do you want to be friends?”

“I’ve never heard of that before. Usually when girls get red like this, it’s related to a crush or a lover,” she pulled back, “I could be wrong, since I’m not a normal girl.” She dug into her pocket and pulled out a clump of dirt with worms sticking out. She held it out towards Alice.

Now was the time to see if Alice could become her friend, or just another girl that didn’t want to be around her.

“Oh, I didn’t realize. The book is my lover, then.” OH goodness, did she need to take her mind off of Mr. Darcy.  She almost didn’t even notice the introduction of dirt and worms until it was held towards her. Instinctively she jerked back, having not expecting it, but then truly frowned realizing what this might have meant.

“You haven’t taken that from a garden, have you? Dear me! What’s the purpose?”

She shrugged, “I’ve mostly read the classics: Animal Farm, Lord of the flies, everything they make you read in high school, plus some of my own.” She said, “what about you? I bet you like books like Pride and Prejudice.”

Alice had been nodding along to the books she had been listing off, but utterly froze at the mention of her favorite book. Was her face going red? Probably. Because she wasn’t thinking of how much she loved the plot, no the detailed writing. She wasn’t thinking of the craft, how the story thrived throughout the years and it’s numerous adaptions. She was thinking of one thing and one thing only.

Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.

Yes, her face was red, but she took it in pride, pretending it wasn’t there.

“Oh, that’s my favorite book. As is some Dickens, Jane Eyre-” yes try to get away from the subject of her fictional love interest.

“Oh! I’m sorry, I didn’t see you there! Are you alright?”

It was just his luck.

This was the second time today he’d wound up lying on the ground with his textbooks scattered in the wind and his ass really fucking sore. First time: could’ve been either person’s fault, Second time: it’s probably his fault. Perhaps he should spend more time looking at what’s in front of him, rather than the skies above him.

Ah-but he just couldn’t help it! The scenery, the pure nature was just so breathtaking. It was unlike anything he’d seen before and he couldn’t help but get so very lost in it all. He’d never seen grass this green before, in his entire life.

“Oh hey, look! We’re here.” 

And Amelia was right. It wasn’t a particularly large coffee shop, more of a hole-in-the-wall type than anything else, and quite easily overlooked among the other stores surrounding it. But only the best of coffees passed through their doors, which was exactly why Feliciano kept flocking back again and again.

“Okay, okay! What are you thinking of having? Hot chocolate?”

“And two muffins~” She smiled, but it slowly fell at his look. She pouted, “don’t judge me! I’m going to be playing basketball later, so I’ll work it off.”

He took it, remaining lax as he replied, “Abel, been here a while now.”

God he was so old. She was like a child compared to him. Not that he was calling her childish, simply just too young for him to feel comfortable with; he sometimes forgot there were other years to the place than just his.

Meh, he guessed he just wasn’t the talkative type; company was always best, for him, when you just sat there, enjoying each other’s presence. Except…he also realised this was a social situation. He /had/ to be social.

She smiled, “do you play sports, Abel? You look like the type that enjoys basketball.” In the past she found the best way to get someone to talk was to play a game with them. Perhaps she could use this to get Abel to loosen up and talk more.

She tilted her head to the side and raised an eyebrow, “what happened? Alfred, I’ve only met you twice in my whole life–not counting this moment of course–so how could I know what happened?”

He blinked. This was true. Sure, they’d called and stuff for birthdays and all like normal cousins did, but… Did she really not know? That seemed… a little far fetched.

“My dad? Remember? I’m living with our other aunt and uncle. Or I was.”

Her eyes widen as a memory came back to her: She was fourteen and at a funeral. Everyone was crying except for her stepfather. Her mother was crying because she had just lost...

Amelia gasped as she remembered. Why had she forgotten? Was she so self centered that she couldn’t remember others pain? She looked down in shame, “Alfred...I’m so sorry. I..I must have pushed it away.” She bit her lip.

“Literature most certainly. Light magic is more or less… a curiosity I suppose,” really, it’s a necessity. “Do you have a favorite book?”

“How very nice.” And yet another thing to worry about. Even if shadow magic wasn’t nearly bad as the rest- people like these, thinking they can stop nature (rather, her, nature), made her nervous.

“I’m in my third year and I study literature and light magic. Education…is also of my interest.”

“Work?” Alfred hummed appreciatively at the notion of her actually holding a job. It seemed like too much responsibility for him to think about at the moment, so that was definitely impressive.

Normally Amelia tried to keep a cool and level head, but she couldn’t do that around Alfred. They had only met twice in their live, but he was always fun to play with. Getting the chance to know him just excited her!

Alfred laughed, shaking his head, “Chill, dude, one question at a time. I’m in the uh,” He squinted as if trying to remember, “Toutouwai Village, and I’m majoring in law and aerospace engineering. I’ve been here since the beginning of this semester. How ‘bout you?”
