For me though, my mind goes straight to a trope which I’m very fond of - soulmate aus. Specifically the ones where everyone sees in black and white, but when you meet your soulmate suddenly you’re able to see in colour.
Maybe first meeting wouldn’t work so well for sharksnroses because they met so young, so a clarification on the soulmate logic that maybe it starts on your 16th birthday, and from then when you meet your soulmate, you can suddenly see in that beautiful technicolour.
So Pedro is older, he turns 16 and still sees nothing, because his soulmate isn’t 16 yet.
More than hopes, he’s certain it’s Fermín! Who else could possibly be his soulmate?? They’re perfect together, the best of friends, and hopefully soon they could be more than.
Fermín thinks so too, even if they don’t say it. He’s terrified from the moment Pedro turns 16, dreading a day his friend comes to him with tales of how beautiful the world looks now he’s met some perfect stranger, but of course that never happens.
And so they wait in this unspoken anticipation for Fermín’s birthday, planning to meet in the morning as soon as they wake up.
So Fermín goes running to Pedro’s house, before he’s even touched breakfast or any birthday presents, just so desperate to see his friend and see the world in colour as he knows he’s going to.
Until Pedro opens the door, wearing a matching blinding smile.
And he’s still in black and white.
Fermín doesn’t really remember much after that. He was so certain, so sure, he and Pedro were meant to be soulmates, there could be no one else, so how, why wasn’t it happening?
He fled, of course, arriving home in tears and refusing to talk to anyone, leaving Pedro dumbstruck and devastated in his doorway.
Because Pedro, of course, did see the colours. As soon as he opened the door and caught a glimpse of Fermín’s smiling face, everything exploded in so much colour and beauty, and his heart finally clicked into place. But Fermín ran, he didn’t look happy, didn’t stay to discuss it, his eyes welled with tears and he fled.
So Pedro thinks that Fermín hates it, thinks that Fermín came over to make sure that they weren’t soulmates, and on seeing that they were, he wanted nothing to do with Pedro anymore.
Angst angst etc etc, this is how they fall apart, both heartbroken, Pedro at the cruel rejection from his beloved childhood friend and soulmate, and Fermín at thinking that Pedro wasn’t his to have.
Of course, this is where the colour blind part comes in, they are both soulmates, Fermín happens to have a rare form of colour blindness where everything is seen in grayscale, soulmate or not.
Maybe in the future a doctor finds out during an eye test that he’s colourblind, and they can reconcile.
Maybe they never do, and Fermin lives his black and white life wondering if he’ll ever have a soulmate, while Pedro has to suffer his colourful world alone.
Either way I love stuff like this hehe :D
