He who separates himself seeks his own desire, He quarrels against all sound wisdom.
Proverbs 18:1
Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God.
1 Peter 2:16
How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, 'HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!'
Romans 10:14-15
Paradox
The most comfortable thing for me to do is to stay silent and listen.
But it’s also one of the most difficult things for me to do.
In the spirit of not coming off as someone who’s trying to garner pity or sympathy (I’m really not) I will, however, say that I’ve spent most of my high school and early college years trying to break out of the social awkwardness that resulted from my introverted tendencies. I tried a lot of things, like studying my facial expressions in the mirror so that I would be better prepared to “present” my face to the world outside (some of you have heard me admit that my series of “silly” Facebook profile pictures actually began because I was insecure about my real smile). I practiced being confident (aggressive, even) in my speech even when I didn’t know what the heck I was talking about, so that people would listen to me when I had something to say, so that I wouldn’t have to miss the spotlight all the time. My goal was to command respect, and the name of the game was control. And when I finally got it right (or so I thought) — everybody paid attention to me, everybody liked me, everybody wanted to be my friend — I hoisted up a trophy of self-accomplishment and cruised from there.
But isn’t it interesting how God reminds us — gently, yes, but firmly and irresistibly — that in order to crown Him Lord of our lives, we need to give up even the things we value most? And in this instant I’m reminded of Paul’s passion as recorded in Philippians 3:8.
The charisma that I’d spent so long “developing” is so near and dear to my heart because it reflects one of my deepest-seated desires: the need for certainty in an uncertain world. But He coaxes me into letting go of my self-made attempts at control, NOT because He is a demanding, unreasonable slave-driver, but because He knows that ultimately He is the only certainty that will satisfy and fulfill me.
The most comfortable thing for me to do, as a natural introvert, is to stay silent and listen.
But, in all my striving and chasing, it has also become one of the most difficult things for me to do.
And so it’s a work in progress, yes. It’s His work in progress.
And coming to us, he took Paul's belt and bound his own feet and hands, and said, 'This is what the Holy Spirit says: "In this way the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles"'When we had heard this, we as well as the local residents began begging him not to go up to Jerusalem. Then Paul answered, 'What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but even to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.' And since he would not be persuaded, we fell silent, remarking, 'The will of the Lord be done!'
Acts 21:11-14
It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1
But if any has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow not to me, but in some degree -- in order not to say too much -- to all of you. Sufficient for such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the majority, so that on the contrary you should rather forgive and comfort him, otherwise such a one might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. Wherefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him...but one whom you forgive anything, I forgive also; for indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did it for your sakes in the presence of Christ, so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes.
Paul, on remembering the purpose of rebuke in 2 Corinthians 2:6-11 (emphasis mine)
A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin.
Proverbs 26:28 (via lifesgreatestpursuit)
Although He was a son, He learned obedience through what He suffered.
Hebrews 5:8 (via lifesgreatestpursuit)
By forbearance a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue breaks the bone.
Proverbs 25:15 (via lifesgreatestpursuit)
For Your name’s sake, O LORD, pardon my iniquity, for it is great.
Psalm 25:11 (via lifesgreatestpursuit)
Behold, these are the fringes of His ways; and how faint a word we hear of Him! But His mighty thunder, who can understand?
Job 26:14 (via lifesgreatestpursuit)
For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:15-16 (via lifesgreatestpursuit)
Esau said to his father, ‘Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father.’ So Esau lifted his voice and wept.
Genesis 27:38 (via lifesgreatestpursuit)
Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
1 Corinthians 10:14
Therefore let anyone who think that he stands take heed lest he fall.
1 Corinthians 10:12 (via risingofthesun)
Only be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all His ways and to keep His commandments and to cling to Him and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
Joshua 22:5
