Actually I don't think it's truly all that rare for one to believe this as long as they have eyes, it's just that it is not pushed at all like the other agendas and in fact the other agendas actively try to bury this as deep as they can. So good luck in the rest of your classical studies and have courage (drawing from your username hehe) because I suppose you're encountering these agendas a lot during your classical studies. We need people like you :)

Yeah I do encounter opinions like these with some regularity unfortunately - mostly from people who want me to validate what they believe and then get mad at me when I inform them that the evidence doesn't agree with their opinions. I'm sorry you have to deal with these views and accusations so often. And that you are receiving so little support from those of us outside your nation.

had a couple people be like "i have no idea what this means" so to clarify: the word penis in latin originally meant tail and only later got the sense of, uh. penis. so this is cicero complaining that nowadays all these hooligans are using the word "penis" for naughty purposes

Yeah, I agree, very decent article. I don't mind that the author says the Odyssey can be viewed as part of Western heritage but I too disagree that they concede that the heritage also belongs to the West. That's false.

It might be an odd analogy but I think it works; Greeks have Ottoman heritage because they were subjects and lived in the Ottoman empire for most of its existence. They were influenced by it whether they liked it or not. As a result, Ottoman heritage is part of their heritage but this does not mean they own the heritage or the heritage belongs to them and they can do with it as they fancy. Greeks can interpret and reinterpret Greek presence in the Ottoman heritage but they cannot change it from the top-down by removing the Turks and placing themselves as the key or sole elements in it.

In the same way, Western intellectuals chose to read, study, be inspired and be influenced by ancient Greek literature and this is their truth. Ancient Greece inspired their architecture, their arts, their studies in science and philosophy, their anthropocentrism, their political systems. This was an impact they allowed on their societies. But it does not give them the right to change the ancient greek legacy from the top down, override the Greeks, claim more direct ancestry or re-interpret everything in a way that makes themselves and their beliefs the center in ancient Greek thinking and identity. It's simple. These are not two-way roads.

I already reblogged the latest related Farya video. Farya remains the most enlightened foreign explorer of Greek identity and culture, of course this does not mean he is perfectly right, as he tends to minimize the impact on the West a little or not be very fond of the west's influence on Greek culture the last two centuries (i.e western tradition in music). Nobody is 100% objective.
