Cat’s Eye disappeared into the wrecked ship at the center of camp once they were back, needing a break from the other Gems for a while. Sapphire waved to Salt when ey noticed her, but ey seemed to be busy and didn’t greet the arrivals otherwise.

Chrome shrugged, playing with the ends of his hair. “They’re probably by the spring if they’re not around camp.”

Salt watched Cat disappear, excited for alone time. She was glad to talk to it so extensively, but understood the need for solitude. 

She smiled to Chrome and gave a short thank you before heading off towards the springs. She had wondered how Carn must have been, it’d been a while since they’ve talked. She kept an eye out for them as she walked towards.

Chrome waved goodbye to her, figuring she knew where the springs were and going off to find Poppy and show off his new form.

Carnelian was precisely where Chrome had said they’d be – sitting in one of the springs in the forest, mostly staring into the water and zoning out. The sound of footsteps made them snap their head up, but they didn’t seem entirely in focus yet, and simply muttered, “Oh. Hi?”

Salt smiled as she noticed Carnelian. Once they realized she was there she excitedly said, “Carnelian! Take a look at my new form!” She adored showing off her new form, it was something she waited a very long time to do, and she changed much. 

In the back of her mind, Salt thought about what they may have been doing up there at the springs. There was nothing around them though, so they couldn’t have been working on a project. Perhaps it was just a sabbatical spot for them, she thought.

Chrome brushed the bottom of his hair, his smile growing. He laughed a bit, shrugging. “I’d hope so. There’s not much use in purposely reforming if you don’t like the way it turns out, right?”

He took a glance around when Salt mentioned the shards, nodding in agreement. “Let’s finish it up, then! I’ll let Cat know that we’ll be heading back soon.”

Chrome did just that, though he wasn’t entirely sure Cat’s Eye had heard him until they’d finished with their task and grabbed it to head back to camp. Cat’s Eye was a bit upset that it was being pulled away from its work so close to “perfection,” but it did miss its private corner, back at camp.

Once everything was put back into place, they started back.

After a long walk full of thoughts, Salt arrived at the camp with her party. Looking around, Salt noted to herself how she felt the place was starting to become familiar to her. She’d been here a few times now and started to recognize the layout.

Looking to her companions, she said, “Hey, where do you think I could find Carn?”

Chrome hugged Salt tightly, mostly to make her feel better, but a bit to ground himself as well. He had always been an emotional Gem, and hearing about the war could get him riled up like nothing else. Besides, through all of this, he’d started to feel closer to Salt. He wanted to convey that somehow.

He frowned for a brief moment when Salt pulled away but shook his head to make it go away. He followed her gaze to the tank and saw… nothing interesting. Cat was probably spacing out as it worked. Of course, someone who didn’t see it working all the time likely wouldn’t know that. He was right, for the most part: Cat was just deeply focused on its work.

“I guess that’s something,” Chrome said, smiling a bit. “You’ve done… a wonderful job so far. And you’ve even managed to start helping us at the same time!”

Salt joyfully replied, “I’m glad you like your new form!” Salt was very impressed with Chrome’s commitment to reform. She could only imagine how nervous one would be getting in a fight they knew they would lose. Yet he tried his hardest to combat her.

“We’re pretty close to being done, actually.” Salt said, refocusing to the gem shards.

Chrome nodded, running a hand through his hair. “That’s what I heard,” he mused. “Tiger… my owner, I guess… she didn’t want to get involved. She managed to stay out of the bulk of it, and she didn’t tell us much. I wish… I wish you didn’t have to go through it. I guess.”

He shifted his feet a bit before opening his arms slightly for a hug. He wasn’t sure if she’d accept, but there was no harm in offering, right?

Chrome knew how to console, that Salt knew well. She leaned down and gave him a soft hug. It was a new experience for her to get this close to a gem outside of a fight. She had been in similar situations with humans on numerous occasion, but gems were so rare to confront without aggression.

Breaking away, Salt looked over her shoulder to Cat to make sure it was fine before returning to Chrome to say, “Thanks. It was rough, but now I’m still alive, so I need to make the most out of myself and protect this kindergarten, it is my responsibility.”

Chrome was about to walk off, but he recognized something and instead walked over to where Salt was standing. He took a deep breath, waiting for some sort of explanation, or at least for her to say something.

Of course, when she did, he didn’t really have an answer. He almost reached up to touch the bubble and hold the shards in his hands, but one glance at his left palm destroyed the plan in an instant. “I guess we’ll never really know,” he mumbled. “Sometimes… I’m grateful for. Being where I was during the war. But at the same time…”

He didn’t know where he was going with his words. They trailed off, lost in his own memories.

Salt gave a pained smile for Chrome. She knew some of the rough feelings going on inside of him. She offered in comfort, “I wish I never had to see war. It’s all just chaos. It started in an instant it felt, I had to act so quickly I couldn’t think about my actions. I shattered many gems trying just to protect myself.” The war was rough on her, and being in the kindergarten she saw it start in was difficult, but she felt a responsibility to protect it from anyone wanting to start another war.

Chrome tried to return her smile when Salt was talking about Carnelian, but he could feel his head spin a little. He’d never seen another Gem like himself, another Chrome Diopside, his entire life. Yet here one had been lying, shattered who knows when. It had left him feeling shaken.

“Yeah, you’re right. They’ll be together again… but I’m okay,” he said, waving her off. “Just… we’re. Entertainers more than moderators. Was Homeworld that short on soldiers? Or was this Gem…”

A Crystal Gem. He couldn’t bring himself to say it. He’d wanted to be one, way back when, and some part of him still did. Faintly, he wondered if he would’ve lived through the war. Probably not.

“I’ll keep picking up shards.”

When Chrome handed her a set of shards, she noticed they were already all from the same gem. It didn’t take long for Salt to recognize the gem, it wasn’t missing any pieces. Salt worried and looked to Chrome, calling out, “Do you recognize this gem? 

Salt lost herself in memory as she looked over the gem shards of the Chrome Diopside. Before the war, this Chrome was one of the only things that staved off the boredom for the working class of the kindergarten. Once in a while work would be halted for a break, and she would put on a show wanting to lift spirits, but it usually ended when one of the sourmouth workers started throwing things at the stage. When the revolution took place, Salt thought she had seen the Chrome gem take cover and hid it out, but it looks as though that wasn’t so. With a solemn look at the gem’s shards, Salt said, “Sometimes I wonder if I was the only one to survive the start of the revolution at the kindergarten. Most of the workers sided with the revolutionaries, the ones who attacked me. Not that the homeworld soldiers had much interest in letting me live either.”

Salt closed her eyes for a moment of silence.

Chrome did genuinely want to spend more time with all of his friends; he missed talking to Carnelian already, and he had grown curious enough about the war that he wanted to ask Poppy and Amethyst about it. Perhaps even get Salt to open up. It wasn’t healthy to keep everything bottled up the way she appeared to be. He was a social Gem, after all. He’d been built for crowds of all kinds, and even if he had rejected Homeworld, he still had his purpose deep inside.

He stumbled across a peculiar set of shards as he thought and walked. They nearly matched his own, with the same hue, but he couldn’t put the pieces together well enough to see if the cut was the same. They made him a little sick to look at, making him pass them along quickly.

Salt smiled when Chrome mentioned Carnelian. She had remembered their conversation a while ago. She said thoughtfully, “It’d be good to see him again.” as she walked towards Chrome to get the set of colored gem bubbles. She read the sick look on his face, and wondered if death was difficult to deal with. She tried to say comfortingly, “At least we’re helping them get the rest of themselves together.” She felt worried for Chrome, the sight can wretch a gut. She continued, “Are you okay?”

Chrome liked this work, he found. It was rhythmic but didn’t require much attention beyond recognizing the color of each shard he picked up. He hummed under his breath as he worked, giving each bubble of gem shards to Salt once he’d finished. Occasionally, he saw her put together a full Gem and thought about asking her if she’d known them, but he put the thoughts aside for now. He didn’t want to upset her again.

“That’s good news,” he replied when she gave him the timeframe. After a moment of thought, he called back, “Would… you want to come back to camp with me and Cat after? Even just for a little bit?”

Cat’s Eye had thrown itself completely into its work, blocking out all thoughts except how to fix the machine in front of it. The machine didn’t talk to it, didn’t need reassurance or compromises, just the wiring fixed, dents hammered out, small fixes. Things that Cat’s Eye could do easily.

Salt stopped what she was doing to look at Chrome when he started speaking. She thought about the kindergarten’s safety for a moment, then answered, “I suppose I could let the kindergarten lay alone for a short while again.” Wondering what he was thinking she asked, “Why are you so eager to have me over?”

The kindergarten meant a lot to Salt, but she knew well that it was just a derelict industrial yard in the middle of nowhere to most anyone who’d ever even see it, so didn’t fret over it too much. She had such strong memories tied to the place.  As Salt sorted through the gems, she came across another that she had cracked herself. She never had trouble cracking them in the moment, but the years and years after the action she still has trouble accepting what she’s done. She could remember the game’s job and personality just by looking at it’s cut. Trying to hold her tears, she bubbled the completed gem to the safe room. 

“I dunno,” Chrome admitted, shrugging. “It’s just fun, I guess? And you’re here by yourself all the time, and I’m sure Car’d wanna talk to you again.”

Cat’s Eye looked away from her, offhandedly sticking its tongue out for a moment in a gesture it’d had human children show it. “Yes, but that’s different. These are just… free. The ones we used for power were in a bubble.”

Its eyes lit up a little when it was allowed to work on the tank, nodding and heading off without another word. The tank was quiet, and it could check on the signals it had set up at camp to monitor human activity.

Chrome nodded in understanding, replying, “Got it!” before he went off to start collecting gems. He’d seen some of the bubbles, and sort of figured out how to make his own.

Salt smiled seeing Chrome jump to work so enthusiastically. It was refreshing having a helping hand. As Chrome collected like-colored gems, she organized them by cut, and bubbled any of the ones she could complete.

Salt looked from afar at Cat’s Eye doing it’s hard work on the tank. She pondered why it liked working on tech so thoroughly. Was tech something it was made for, or did it adopt the love on it’s own? Whatever it was, she was glad for it.

Looking over to Chrome searching for shards she was impressed how far he had already cleared. She called out to him, “At this rate we should finish before the sun sets, but not by much.”

He thought back to his shield, and what had happened to her… He almost reached out to her to help, but remembered when Poppy had been in a similar mood, and just waited.

“I’d be just fine with helping,” Chrome said, putting on a smile. “Cat, what about you?”

Cat’s Eye curled its lip, crossing its arms. “I’d prefer not to touch shards if I can help it.”

Salt rolled her eyes at Cat, and sarcastically said, “You had no problem when they were being used for an energy source.” She respected that it didn’t want to do cleaning, but she wasn’t sure what to think of it trying to cop out. She offered a compromise, “Didn’t you say you had more work to do on the tank anyway? You could do that while we clean up.”

Looking to Chrome, Salt felt comfort. He had such obvious respect for her troubles. It began to be apparent to her why Chrome was always paired up with Cat, he had such patience. To him she said “If you can collect up gem shards that are of the same kind of gem, one pile of amethyst, one pile of Jasper, and so on, I can split them into their individual selves.”

The beast screamed before dissipating it’s projected form. Salt was impressed by her strength, and wondered how much her reform empowered her. Now that she knew it was a corrupted gem, she scanned the ground for it’s gem, and bubbled it when she found it.

Snapping back to look at the Pearl, she noticed her trying to sneak away and called out, “You had better stop; I promise you that I can run faster.” Salt appreciated the Pearl’s projected form, the dancing dress made her strides look smooth and confident. It was almost unpearl-like, and she empathized with going against her function.

Pearl was about to turn around the first corner and the Kindergartener had already defeated the corrupted Gem? What kind of warrior was she? She didn’t even have the build to be one! All she wore was some white dress that belonged more in a cosy court than in a dark and dusty Kindergarten!

When she heard the other Gem calling out to her, she slowly turned back and faked a friendly grin at her, slightly sweating as she tried to make something up: “What do you mean? If that’s what you think, I wasn’t going to leave you fight this thing! I was just… looking for an angle to strike it down while you kept it busy!” She hoped she would buy this. “But you didn’t need me after all, so good for you! Well, have a good day!” She waved an hand before hurrying to disappear behind a corner.

Salt darted towards the pearl, she had no desire to lose track of an intruder in her own kindergarten. Following the pearl around the corner she finally caught up and grabbed the pearl by the shoulder, forcing her to face Salt. Salt commanded to the pearl, “Tell me who you are and why you’re in my kindergarten. I assume you’ve no ill intents towards this place, but I am curious.” Salt did not care that the pearl hadn’t tried to help her fight, she wouldn’t expect such a dainty gem to even know how to fight. She hadn’t even a fight to be helped, she took care of the corrupted gem so quickly.

Now closer up, Salt saw the detail in the dancer’s outfit. Who could have possibly used a pearl such as this one? The pearl did not look like she could have lasted long in a fight, to Salt. Yet, Salt saw a familiar death torn gaze in her eyes.

When the Kindergartener’s grabbed her by the shoulder, Pearl’s reaction was instinctive. In a flash, she had turned back, materialized her rapier and dagger and was now pointing them threateningly at the Kindergartener. gemstone-mouse (funny emplacement), the sword’s point being just a few inches away from it. Pearl was so tense, the last thing thing she needed when stranded on this organic dirt ball was someone to enter her personal space without warning.

The Kindergarten’s words were almost hilarious. This territorial Gem was a good fighter, but she was also on the same level of idiocy as a Ruby. Like what interest would a Pearl have in coveting this old Kindergarten?

“Maybe it isn’t obvious to you, but I came into your Kindergarten because I was being chased by the beast you just smoked. You can believe me that, otherwise, I would never have ventured into this ugly place. Now if you don’t mind, I have better things to do, like finding my way out so I can leave you alone and all your holes.”

Pearl realized how aggressive and offensive she had become since her ship had crashed on this planet. It was the whole opposite of what was expected from a Pearl, but she found it quite pleasing and satisfying to provoke these Earth scum while there was no Homeworld authority figure around. Nuumite’s training almost made her feel invulnerable, as though she could make this entire planet kneel to her with enough will and confidence.

In the matter of a few seconds, Salt’s patience wore down almost all the way. Who did this tiny gem think she was? Salt toyed with the idea in her head that she could wipe this pearl from existence with a a strong blow, but refocused on dealing with her problem.

When the pearl summoned her weapons Salt took a step back and readied herself. The pearl would be stupid to try to fight her, but so far Salt hadn’t been impressed by the pearl’s intelligence. Salt tried to politely remind the pearl, “I crushed what was going to be your sour end to life in a single punch. So you’d ought treat me, and my kindergarten, with more respect.”

Salt looked over her weapons. She recognized them from many centuries ago, when humans used them. Salt kept a distance away to make sure the pearl couldn’t surprise her with the rapier. Salt was still more than confident that she could overpower the pearl in a short moment if she needed to, parrying tactics do not work well with an enemy who does not come at you with a blade.

Pearls, as Salt had known, were only ever servants, with no need to fight. Similar to herself. Salt brought out her weapons for the first time only when she absolutely needed them. The curiosity ate at her too far, and she asked, “When did you learn to summon weapons? You are designed as a non-combative gem, yet you hold that sword and that dagger as though you’ve done it countless times before.”

Chrome returned her grin, still buzzing with excitement. He’d already planned out how he was gonna tell Carnelian when they got back and considered asking them to help him train more, so he could use his shield more effectively as a weapon. His head was filled with other things to the point where he almost didn’t hear her reply.

“Oh, do you try to find all the pieces of the same Gem?” he asked. “That’s… actually really nice.”

Cat’s Eye’s gaze shifted up to meet Salt’s but mostly responded with a half-shrug. “Anytime soon,” it said. “I can monitor the humans’ signals at most times of the day.”

Salt looked to Chrome and replied, “I would appreciate the help cleaning up, it’s really hard to look at these everywhere all the time.” Salt looked towards the ground and said less loudly, “It’s easier for me to figure out which shards are which gems’, I knew most of them before they were shattered.” Salt went quiet. She was thinking about the hallucinations Chrome’s shield gave her. She had seen gems who she had recently collected and bubbled.

Salt snapped back to her situation, realizing the silence. She broke it with, “But really, it is tedious work, I’d understand if you declined.”

Chrome was about to voice how he didn’t mind at all, really, he could help pick up the shards just fine, but stopped when Salt’s voice dropped. He thought back to his shield, and what had happened to her… He almost reached out to her to help, but remembered when Poppy had been in a similar mood, and just waited.

“I’d be just fine with helping,” Chrome said, putting on a smile. “Cat, what about you?”

Cat’s Eye curled its lip, crossing its arms. “I’d prefer not to touch shards if I can help it.”

Salt rolled her eyes at Cat, and sarcastically said, “You had no problem when they were being used for an energy source.” She respected that it didn’t want to do cleaning, but she wasn’t sure what to think of it trying to cop out. She offered a compromise, “Didn’t you say you had more work to do on the tank anyway? You could do that while we clean up.”

Looking to Chrome, Salt felt comfort. He had such obvious respect for her troubles. It began to be apparent to her why Chrome was always paired up with Cat, he had such patience. To him she said “If you can collect up gem shards that are of the same kind of gem, one pile of amethyst, one pile of Jasper, and so on, I can split them into their individual selves.”

The beast screamed before dissipating it’s projected form. Salt was impressed by her strength, and wondered how much her reform empowered her. Now that she knew it was a corrupted gem, she scanned the ground for it’s gem, and bubbled it when she found it.

Snapping back to look at the Pearl, she noticed her trying to sneak away and called out, “You had better stop; I promise you that I can run faster.” Salt appreciated the Pearl’s projected form, the dancing dress made her strides look smooth and confident. It was almost unpearl-like, and she empathized with going against her function.

Pearl was about to turn around the first corner and the Kindergartener had already defeated the corrupted Gem? What kind of warrior was she? She didn’t even have the build to be one! All she wore was some white dress that belonged more in a cosy court than in a dark and dusty Kindergarten!

When she heard the other Gem calling out to her, she slowly turned back and faked a friendly grin at her, slightly sweating as she tried to make something up: “What do you mean? If that’s what you think, I wasn’t going to leave you fight this thing! I was just… looking for an angle to strike it down while you kept it busy!” She hoped she would buy this. “But you didn’t need me after all, so good for you! Well, have a good day!” She waved an hand before hurrying to disappear behind a corner.

Salt darted towards the pearl, she had no desire to lose track of an intruder in her own kindergarten. Following the pearl around the corner she finally caught up and grabbed the pearl by the shoulder, forcing her to face Salt. Salt commanded to the pearl, “Tell me who you are and why you’re in my kindergarten. I assume you’ve no ill intents towards this place, but I am curious.” Salt did not care that the pearl hadn’t tried to help her fight, she wouldn’t expect such a dainty gem to even know how to fight. She hadn’t even a fight to be helped, she took care of the corrupted gem so quickly.

Now closer up, Salt saw the detail in the dancer’s outfit. Who could have possibly used a pearl such as this one? The pearl did not look like she could have lasted long in a fight, to Salt. Yet, Salt saw a familiar death torn gaze in her eyes.

“Yes, that was the point!” Chrome said to Cat’s Eye. “I wanted to be different, so now I am.”

Cat’s Eye averted its gaze when Salt complimented it once again, not sure what to think, covering the confusion with its neutral expression. It muttered something along the lines of “It was nothing” under its breath, kicking a rock on the ground. Chrome let out a small snort of laughter, seeing somewhat through its calm facade. “I’m glad!” Chrome cheered. “You can do lots of cool things with it now!”

Chrome thought for a moment, replyin, “Well, do you have anything else to do here? I don’t think Sapph needs us back, or ey’d send Car. We can always help with whatever!”

Salt had done him a big favor, and he wanted to return it in full.

Salt gave Chrome a warm smile. It was a very new feeling for her to have someone she could trust and rely on. Kindly, she said, “I appreciate the offer. Right now though, I am really new to this. I don’t have a lot of tasks planned out yet.” Salt pointed out to broken gemstone shards on the ground as she said, “Lately I’ve just been bubbling these, hoping that it makes them more comfortable to be collected together at least.”

Salt saw through Cat plainly. It tried to hide itself but she knew it meant something. She looked to it and said, “When would you like to be back by camp, anyway?”

Salt looked down the timbering beast. She was unimpressed by it’s size, but was prepared for a hard battle. She scanned over it hoping to find a gem; not many earth beasts looked too much like this. Just before she was going to jump down and strike it, she noticed a thin figure leaving the same hole it was trying to get into. Salt couldn’t believe her eyes, it looked as though to be a pearl. She hadn’t met many, other than when higher ups would visit her in the kindergarten and their pearls came with. Typically, a gem in Salt’s position of work overseeing kindergarten operations had their own pearl, but since Salt was made a short temporary replacement, she never got her own. She saw the pearl trying to run away, but she hadn’t had the time to worry about her for now.

Looking to the beast, who was now decently close, Salt leaped into the air and fell onto it with a solid punch to it’s back. She started off with such a strong hit in hopes of ending the battle as swiftly as possible to confront the pearl before she left.

Pearl was now retracing her steps through the Kindergartner, with the steps of the corrupted Gem marked in the ground to help her. She hoped the Kindergartner hadn’t spotted her while she was sneaking away, because she didn’t wish to deal with another rebel. All she wanted was to leave this creepy place as quickly as possible and distance whoever would win this confrontation - considering both of them would probably go after her once they would be done with their opponent.
