What are all your dashcon experiences? Is what happened in that post true?
My Dashcon experience itself I would give a 5/10. My roommates were wonderful, the rooms weren’t bad, I made a few friends in lines, my panel went alright, and I had deep dish pizza. The rest of the con? That’s a far different story.
Arriving at the convention, at the main hotel entrance, there was absolutely NO signs pointing where you could pick up your badge. I had to ask three different guests before someone could point me in the right direction. When arriving, I picked up my badge without ease and hunted down my room. The rest of my evening was spent in the lobby playing a relatively quiet game is CAH with some other con-goers who arrived early.
Friday morning, I woke early, and headed down to walk around. Nothing started until 1pm, so a lot of time was spent in the lobby yet again. Once everything opened, I checked out the Vendor Area/Artist Alley. The vendors at the con were insanely sweet, and very informative, helpful, and had some great wares to offer. I had no desire to attend any panels until my own, so I decided to hunt down the “game room”. Upon finding that, I saw one TV, not on, and about three people sitting around one table. I couldn’t see any real games in sight. I walked around for a while, snapping some pictures of cosplays, then just waited in my own hotel room until my panel. Now is when the real fun hits..
In the middle of my panel, one of my co-panelists got a phone call from one of the owners of Dashcon. She wondered why she would call, knowing she was in a panel, then ignored it. Post panel, I checked tumblr and saw the post begging for money. I immediately texted my co-panelist, and she informed me that was why she got that call. I headed up to my room, and watched the shitstorm hit tumblr. I refused to donate, due to the sketchiness..and I’m not an idiot. Then, past 10pm, when the payment was “due”, silence from Dashcon. Then, only posts from attendees saying we “earned” the money. Absolutely NO official statement from the admins. Regardless, I had pizza, and not a care in the world. Finally, hours later..Lochlan issued a statement, as I’m sure you’ve all seen. I later learned that Dashcon did NOT have the money, but was expecting to be able to pay everything off with what they could earn on Saturday (professional right!?), so they needed a “loan” from their 15 year old guests. Promises have been made for ALL refunds done, but if you donated, I wouldn’t hold my breath for one.
The next morning, I spent a lot of my time in the vendor area again, just socializing. Snapped some more pictures of cosplays, then joined the line for those with reserved seats for the Nightvale reading. Waited in line for about an hour, then got up to show my ID. Wasn’t on the list. I hunted down my confirmation email to prove it, then was finally allowed to find a seat. I waited until 12, when the panel was supposed to start. I gave a ten minutes leniency before I started to get mad. It took until 1 (when the panel was over) before we got any form of explanation. Roxanne came up to explain that WTNV had walked, and that they “had the money”, but WTNV “wasn’t willing to wait”. When asked about refunds for the seats that were reserved, we got a “we’ll see, idk, we can put up a statement later”. Speed up a few hours, our refund is the “one hour in the ball pit, preferred over general seating at the “concert”, and our names entered into some raffle. As someone who paid for my seat, all I wanted was my $15 back. By that point, I said fuck it.
I spent the rest of my night at the mall, picked up some dinner, watched a movie in my room, spent some time with my roommates, and fell asleep. I wasn’t wasting a single second more of my time with this convention, and how it was being run. I am typing this now on Sunday morning, as I pack up my stuff, and get ready to leave without attending a single panel today.
Everything that has been posted in that main post has been true. Mints were given out as prizes, minors were let into 18+ panels (but NOT BDSM 101), money was missing, admins were nowhere to be found, and there are a LOT of disappointed guests. If reading this, you are debating attending Dashcon 2015, I will happily advise you to throw your money else where..at least then you know where it’s going.
Simply put, if nothing else good has come out of Dashcon, it’s that I can look at all these memes about it, and they’re even more funny to me because I was there.
