July '97, somewhere in Arkansas. Heavy heat and a bed that should be too narrow for two but isn't.
Dean sees the way Sam is looking at him in the midday sun: kid-brother smile, all the worries of spring left behind, his hair wet from the river, shoulders and neck sunburned. The grass is biting patterns into their skin and the birds are circling overhead; they're two content beasts who don't know a thing about the future. Dean looks back at him and grins.
The days are long, the nights warm, and there's nothing to do but wait and see.
