Taking Stock || Gene & Eliza
The blonde eyed her guard, before nodding to Gene. Luis didnât seem happy with playing babysitter, and hardly seemed intent to adjust to itâafter all, he was only supposed to be temporary from what sheâd been told. âOf course, I think Luis and I would both like that,â she answered. âIâm not sure he likes following me around much, to be honest.â She gave a slight frown, wishing that Gio was still around. The girl had hardly been obedient for her former guard, but he had loyally served for most of her life.Â
Looking up at the older man beside her, Frankieâs go-to person, who even seemed to be her right hand before Sal these days, Gene was familyâbut like most of her family, Eliza had to struggle to think of what all she really knew about the man. Sheâd always been kept out of business, before being entirely naive to what it was her family did, and now not exactly wanting to be involved. But she was involved, even before as she had been seen as a pawn to force Lucianâs hand, and now would she be the same thing for her sister? âGene, how long have you known The Capone family?â she finally asked.
Gene could barely suppress his smile as he waved off Luis, pretending not to see the grateful huff the man gave before turning and stalking off in the opposite direction. He didn't know where his young friend went these days, but he seemed to be in an even darker mood than usual. He would have to discuss finding Eliza a permanent escort with Francis soon.Â
"It has nothing to do with you," Gene assured her. "Luis just likes...well, he prefers tasks that he can be in charge of. Watching after you, he's not in charge, you are. I doubt that he minds what you do, it's simply the idea that sets him on edge. He's very...energetic. But he's also loyal, he defend you with his life." Gene said carefully, trying to address any concern that the young woman may have. "I would do it myself, but I doubt you want to be cooped up in the study with me half the day or being dragged around town. I'm afraid I'm not very exciting company as of late." He sighed.
At her question, Gene shrugged his shoulders. "Your father took me in when I was a boy, barely sixteen. Hard as it may be to believe, but I was a lot like Luis back then. I had a helluva temper." He admitted with a small smile. "Why do you ask?"
