When it comes to designing exteriors, utmost precision and advanced features are prerequisites for architects. These house exterior design s
Exterior design software worth using in 2026 (free and paid) – what's in your toolkit?
We've been working in architectural visualization for years, with exterior renders being a core part of what we do. Over that time we've gone through a lot of tools – some became essential, others didn't last long. We just updated our internal toolkit and thought we'd share what actually made the cut.
Splitting this into pro tools and tools that work well if you're not a 3D artist.
Pro/studio level:
3ds Max + V-Ray – still unmatched for photorealistic exterior stills. You'll spend a while learning it, but nothing else gives you that level of control over materials, lighting, and scene complexity.
D5 Render – this one surprised us. Real-time engine, great outdoor lighting out of the box, and the free community version is solid enough to actually work with. It's growing fast.
Lumion – the quickest way to get a polished exterior scene, especially LiveSync with SketchUp and Revit.
Enscape – works directly inside Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, and ArchiCAD. No exporting, no separate workflow. Great for quick walkthroughs and client reviews.
Twinmotion – strong for presentations. Seasonal and weather changes, drag-and-drop landscaping, VR and panorama output.
For beginners, homeowners, and DIY projects:
SketchUp – still the most accessible entry point into 3D exterior modeling. Huge community, extensive 3D Warehouse, and a gentle learning curve.
Homestyler – browser-based with AI-assisted features and a solid free plan. No installs, no commitment.
Planner 5D – intuitive interface for quick exterior concepts, with AR/VR integration for spatial context.
Hover – take smartphone photos of a house and get a 3D model within minutes. Practical for remodeling estimates and quick presentations.
HomeDesigns AI – upload a photo, get AI-generated redesign options. Fun for exploring "what if" ideas before committing to anything.
On the AI side – Chaos Veras and ArchiVinci are worth watching. Not replacing anything yet, but useful for quick concept exploration in early stages.
We covered 23+ tools with pricing breakdowns in more detail on our blog if anyone wants the full list.
