13 Reasons Why Not To Buy Into The Hype
I followed the flock. I am a sheep. Iām an angry sheep.
Any publicity is good publicity right? Representation absolutely matters and giving issues like suicide and sexual assault attention though mainstream media is vital. However, it should be done well. And by that I donāt mean quality of the writing or artistry. I mean in a way that is not harmful.
The media has often been accused of glamorising social issues and trivialising teenage concerns. This piece of media is deserving of that.
While individuals live very different lives and no account of mental health illness can compare to every other, the depiction of suicide in this programme is concerning considering the target audience. Suicide contagion is a real problem and presentations of suicide as beautifully tragic contribute to this.
I could go on for ages but I donāt have the time or patience to defend all my opinions so I just want to say this:
- They say that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and they are kind of right. But the only thing suicide solves is life itself. Any problems that you can live through can be solved in other ways, but they cannot if you donāt believe they can be.
- People can feel suicidal for a variety of reasons, the main one being that they feel unable to live anymore. Very rarely is there one event or person or action that cause these feelings. And if someone kills themselves, they end their struggle but they cause pain to those they leave behind. This pain will be severely worsened if they try to work out who is to blame, when it is not fair to make anyone responsible for someone ending their life. People are too complicated to assign that kind of blame.Ā
- It is not possible to get through these kind of feelings without help. Talking to anyone, family, friend, professional, literally anyone at first. Organise your thoughts for yourself and if you still feel overwhelmed, the best thing you can do is get help. Because no matter what influences the feelings, they are in your head and you canāt run from that.Ā
If someone offers help, take it. If no one offers help, ask for it. Be open, be honest, be yourself. And make it so yourĀ āselfā feels worth living for.
