"No!" Isabela beamed.
Maybe that wasn't modern of her, but Isabela had wanted the proper surprise. The kind where they'd had all the important conversations and then she was surprised.
Even after Clayton had done it and it became one of the worst mistakes of her life, she still wanted a surprise.
And, you know what? She stood by that decision. Because when Clayton had proposed to her, Isabela always knew that it was a script. They both had their lines and knew what to say. It had been what Isabela had always expected. However, what Copper had done for her? That was the kind of thing she dreamed about.
And that was how she knew he was the One. The planning, the ring, the spectacle. Making sure she had her shoes on. She had loved every second of it.
It was a scary feeling, but Isabela couldn't stop smiling.
"We talked about marriage in the vague sense. You know: to make sure we were on the same page," she said as if she was reading from a manual.
"But--I had no idea he was evening thinking about it! I mean, he was acting weird the last few weeks, but I just thought--I don't know." Well, she did. She had worried it was her. That he was going to break up with her. How silly that seemed now.
"I certainly didn't think it was this! The pink stones are sapphires. They're his birthstone, isn't that lovely?"

There was no way for Gen to stop her eyes from straying back to the stunning ring on Isa's finger. It was beautiful and the way the light sparkled off it only fueled her jealousy. Of course, she knew that Isabela deserved it. She'd heard about the mess with Clayton, how it had all gone so badly. Her friend deserved the romance that Copper seemed to give her.
There was no denying that this time around the other woman was absolutely glowing with her happiness. It was infectious.
"It's all so romantic," she gushed, smiling earnestly at her friend. As much as Gen wished that she was the one gushing about a proposal or even a relationship, she was happy for Isa. For the fairy tale she seemed to be living at the moment.
Part of her hoped that she would have something like that one day. That someone would sweep her off of her feet in such a way. The last thing she wanted was a marriage like her parents. It wasn't a bad one by any means; she was certain that her parents loved each other somewhat. But it was still a marriage of convenience. Planned by their parents to bring families together and secure stronger ties to a community that was tight knit.
Gen, as childish as it was, wanted love. She wanted someone to be so devoted to her that they couldn't stand the thought of not putting a ring on her finger. She wanted someone that she could share all aspects of her life with; someone that knew the dark parts of her soul and still chose to stay.
It wasn't unheard of but.. well, to be honest, she was paranoid. Secrecy had been instilled in her from a young age. The dangers of what could happen if someone knew the truth and didn't like it. The trouble she could find herself in for trusting the wrong person.
"You know whatever you need help with for the wedding, I'm here. You just say the word."
