costume series: 19th century Highland Dress of Clan Cameron (Lochiel tartan), as worn by Capt. Donald Cameron of Lochiel XXIII Chief of Clan Cameron on Gentleman Jack S01E02
Historical Fashion: Crespines and Cauls
Crespines (or crespinettes) and/or cauls were worn from the 13th through the 15th century. Performing a similar function as the hairnet, their purpose was to enclose women’s voluminous hair through their crisscross network and they were made up of gold, silk, or silver. Women divided their hair to both sides of their head and the crespines confined the hair. The hairstyle was held together usually by a fillet over the head made of metal or fabric.
