wtf did I just watch
Dawson Dawson-Watson
I watched an insane amount of TikTok and other short form videos for the story I'm writing right now. I gotta say, afterwards, I found myself picking up my phone and opening the apps, almost unconsciously. I was walking and I thought about watching some vids at the same time. I was on hold to the ATO... maybe some videos.
I also happen to specialise in gambling addiction (although I'm not practicing in that area right now), and all I could fucking think about was how these fucking apps were conditioning me in the same fucking way gambling apps do. To be constantly plugged in, consuming. To not even think about just picking it up and having a look. To feel bored when I wasn't watching them, to think about watching them when I wasn't watching them....
That shit is fucking evil.
I deleted it. I'm not exposing myself to that.
That shit will fry your dopamine/reward system so fucking bad you will never read a book or watching a movie again without it.
Love yourself and your potential enough to put that fucking shit away. Watch longer form things that require focus and engagement. Listen to podcasts and audiobooks. Read books. DO ANYTHING BUT CONSUME SHORT FORM CONTENT IN AN UNSTRUCTURED WAY.
If you MUST consume it (I'm sure people will be like 'but my classmates' or 'but my own channel'.... etc), do it in a siloed and structured way. 30 minutes between x time and x time on x day. Focus on it. Don't eat and do it. Watch each short form video to completion. Engage critically with the content. ANd never watch them first thing in the morning or last thing at night.
PLEASE. From a gambling professional, short form videos ping your SAME circuitry and you will fuck up your life and your brain so badly if you don't put up guardrails for yourself.

Saw this news and I had to make a rough sketch about it. 🥹 We humans always underestimate the empathy and care of other animals..
Love them <3 I found a post with more info, her name is Josie. and she lived til 2025. "Her two daughters, Dawn and Duffy, acted as her "eyes". They guided her through the bush with soft contact calls, protected her from scavengers, and ensured she fed first after hunts. Even more striking, she lived to approximately 17 years old, significantly exceeding the average wild lion lifespan of 14–15 years."
And bonus fun fact from the comments: "You know those lions in Addo Elephant National Park descend from Kalahari stock chosen deliberately because their genes match closest to the extinct Cape black maned lions that ruled the region over a hundred years ago. The park basically resurrected the OG mane crew."
nevermind, this is the funniest part of the book so far

A recent conversation in a discord group reminded me of something important. If you're on the younger side (under 25 or 30) and you haven't seen all the incredible, dark and disturbing fantasy films that came out in the 1980s and late 1970s, then I would strongly encourage you to do so. There was something so dark about that genre during that time that I absolutely adore and that isn't really around in modern films for children and young adults (once they learned that it traumatized a whole generation of us).
My faves in case you need any recommendations. (Some of these are really not appropriate for children, so keep that in mind lol).
The Dark Crystal - 1982 - the Skeksis will give you nightmares. I am honestly very proud of the remake for being just as disturbing if not more so than the original.
Watership Down - 1978- NOT FOR CHILDREN - Jesus Christ why did so many of our parents show us this film at a formative age? It's all about trauma and death and displacement and there's literal blood and murder. Not a G Rated Film. Still, it's very good. Loads better than that CGI remake from a decade ago.
The Secret Of NIMH - 1982 - Incredible movie. Minor disturbing elements. Probably my favorite on the list. It's just a great adventure story with real world issues (animal experimentation, mental health problems, disabilities) and there's even a lovely romance. Highly recommend.
Legend - 1985- This film is just straight up disturbing. Yes, there's a lot of beautiful shots of unicorns and sexy, 20-something year old (insane Scientology wack job) Tom Cruise and gorgeous Mia Sara, but there's also torture, madness and literally the Devil (Tim Curry is the entire reason you should watch this film)
Labyrinth - 1986 - I only really have two words. David. Bowie. My 10 year old self found out about a lot of burgeoning kinks while watching that man prance around in eyeliner and a codpiece. It's a wonderful adventure as well - if you ignore the blatant romantic and sexual tension between Bowie and an underage Jennifer Connelly (none of us could)
The NeverEnding Story - 1984 - Lots of disturbing imagery in this one! The Nothing was fucking terrifying, and the creatures in this world seemed uniformly creepy, but still incredibly well done. Love the adventure of it.
The Princess Bride - 1987 - Not technically a kids film maybe? Lots of adult themes and adult jokes, but safe for kids imo. I adored it and still do. Incredible performances by Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin. R.O.U.S, Hello! My name is Inigo Montoya! (need I say more?)
The Last Unicorn - 1982 - A beautiful film with stunning representations of innocence, good and evil. Just gorgeous really. I should rewatch it as it's been 20 years or so.

so enemies to lovers and toxic/ dark romance and the whole 'i can fix him' tropes are fun and all... But what about revenge?
Like... evil but hot bad guy does bad things and mc... doesn't fall for them?
mc plots revenge instead?
And it's a really tough fight. But they win. And they win through sheer force of will. Like, feminine rage activated, but it does not give them superpowers. It just makes them angry. Really angry.
Angry enough that it's the only thing keeping them going. Angry enough to take over their life completely. Angry enough that when they are worn down, physically, mentally, when they are confused and hurt and maybe even slightly attracted? they are able to snap out of their downward spiral and deliver a killing blow because anger keeps their head clear and grounds them and fuels them.
Revenge stories. I think they're interesting bc often we're told revenge is not the answer.
But what if it was tho?
do it stressed
do it depressed
DO IT POSSESSED
wait what?
DO IT ANYWAY!
somebody posted this Calvin and Hobbes strip and i cannot overstate just how topical this fuckin thing is
