Lately, Iâve been calling myself a fool.
A fool for believing that my partner meant all those sweet nothings. He begged. He promised. He swept me off my feet only to yank the rug from under me. And when I finally confronted him? He gave me a half ass apology laced with lame ass attacks.
He argues that Iâm an adult... that I made the choice to be with him, insinuating that I should have known what I've gotten myself into. I argue, so if I didn't make the choice to be with you, what would you then say? What would have made you happy, dear?
I sarcastically ask myself, was I wrong for forgiving the same man who held my hand over dinner and told me he wanted to marry me? The same man who said I made him happy? Who once looked me in the eye and said, âIâm begging youâ? Seriously.Â
Yes, Iâm an adult. And yes, I chose to be with him, but I made that choice based on his words, his promises.
Maybe I shouldnât have forgiven him. But does that mean he now gets to weaponize that forgiveness? To turn around and blame me for trusting him? Is that what he's angry about, that I forgave him, and now he has to sit with the discomfort of accountability?
Make it make sense.
The logical part of me knows this is deflection. Heâs defensive because deep down, he knows heâs the problem. Still, I canât wrap my head around how he refuses to see things from my perspective and how lame his responses were. Was I not worth a phone call? Did I receive this message the day before the start of our vacation that you insisted on having?
My eyes are swollen from crying. Thereâs this pit in my stomach that just wonât go away. I am angry. I am heartbroken. I am also disappointed in how this blew up, and how my now ex-partner decided to act like a lame adult.
I feel that this has poisoned my perception of him. I also feel upset that if he were to call, I'd pick up. I also imagine that he will call when he needs to emotionally use someone, and by picking up, I have resumed the cycle I hope to break.
Something about hurting. Something about hope. And something along the lines of being a high-risk, high-reward type of girl.
