'"We were at their house, a bunch of us, and they had the Santeria candles you’d buy at the bodega, and they had one that was The Congo Kid, and on it, it said, ‘If you light this candle, Congo powers will be revealed to you.’ And Lux goes, ‘There’s your name, right there.’ Lux was always the one assigning everyone roles. He even made up a role for my mother, who was stylish, and he thought she was great. He said, ‘Your mother is a Mexican vampire actress,’ and her name was Allura Monsanto, because there was this ad for wigs by Monsanto, and the wig was called the Allura! My look kind of metamorphosed. I was still young enough to really want to play with androgyny and just be a thing rather than any one kind of person.
