Deathly Hallows- NMDYB by olafpriol
I have this headcanon that Snape always pretended to not see the Weasley twins doing shit they werenāt supposed to just because he liked them.
Weasley twins setting traps for Mrs. Norris? Well, he never liked the cat to begin with.
Weasley twins planned to stink bomb Dumbledoreās office? He might have dropped the password when he walked by them huddled behind a statue that definitely didnāt hide them at all.
Weasley twins made a whole vat of shrinking solution to shrink Filchās cleaning supplies? He might have told them what ingredients to add to make it last longer.
If they got caught by McGonagall heād vouch for them by claiming they had been with him in detention. Why would she doubt her strict friend that didnāt care for Gryffindors, let alone a Weasley?
The Weasley twins were his favorite students, not that heād ever admit it. And he was their favorite professor that they proudly boasted, whether it was believed or not
Ugh, yessss!
Severus Snape was in a foul mood. A permanent state of being, some might say, but that evening it was especially pungentālike a rotting cabbagy potion left simmering in a neglected cauldron. The corridors of Hogwarts were thrumming with the usual after-dinner chaos, which grated on his every nerve. Worse still, Mrs. Norris was prowling about, mewling like a demented opera singer. If there was anything that put Snape on edge more than the chatter of idiotic students, it was that blasted cat.
Yet, despite his irritation, he maintained his usual inscrutable scowl. A fleeting movement at the edge of his vision caught his attention: two identical heads of flaming-red hair, bobbing behind an ancient suit of armor that was far too skinny to hide them both. Fred and George Weasley. Obviously. How those two had survived five years at Hogwarts without being turned into newts or spontaneously combusting was beyond him. Still, he had to give them credit: heād encountered few students with enough gall to attempt half the pranks they regularly orchestrated. It would have been almost commendableāif he cared to commend anything.
āMerlinās pants, Fred, move overāyour elbowās in my ribs.ā
āShh, George, youāre the one hogging all the space. And keep quiet, Snapeās rightāā
Snape cleared his throat, stepping forward with a theatrical swirl of his robe. āHeās right here,ā he drawled, glaring daggers at them. āPlanning something nefarious, I presume?ā
George coughed. Fred winced. āErāno, Professor, just admiring the⦠uh⦠craftsmanship ofāā
āāthe statue, yes, the fine detail on the gauntlets, truly riveting.ā
Snapeās lip curled. Craftsmanship, indeed. He might have hexed any other student into the next century, but these two? He had⦠a soft spot, if one could call it that, though he preferred to think of it as a professional curiosity. The Weasley twins had a flair for potions-based mischief. It was reckless brilliance, but brilliance all the same.
āNext time,ā Snape said, folding his arms, āensure youāre not so obvious. I shanāt be covering for you if youāre caught by anyone else.ā
Which was, of course, a complete lie.
He sailed away in a swirl of black fabric, ignoring the twinsā identical grins. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the pair glancing at each other conspiratorially, as though they were reading from the same script. Some people found that twin-speak unsettling. He found itāwell, he refused to say āamusingāābut he was rarely bored by their antics.
Later that evening, Snape glided towards the Potions classroom. He had a suspicion that Fred and George were concocting something vile in there, under the cover of darkness. A lesser man might have swept in to confiscate everything, but Snape was not a lesser manāhe was a Potions Master, and a proud one at that. One does not sabotage raw potential, even if it comes in the form of ginger-haired menaces.
Pushing the door open, he immediately spotted them crouched by a large cauldron, their bright heads like beacons in the gloom.
āFred, hand me the lacewing fliesāā
āGeorge, not thoseāthose are ground scarab shellsāā
āāNo, thatās lacewing. Your eyesightās gone barmyāā
āāOr perhaps your labeling is questionable,ā Snape cut in, startling them both. They stumbled to their feet, stammering. He fixed them with a baleful glare, then inspected the cauldronās contents with a critical sniff. āShrinking Solution, is it?ā
Fred cleared his throat. āMore⦠longevity to it, you see,ā he began, attempting solemnity. āLasts longer, Professor. Enough to, oh, shrink Filchās broom cupboard for at least a week or soāā
āāHis cleaning supplies, actually,ā George corrected. āThen the staff is forced to endure his moaning. Diabolical, yes?ā
Snapeās left eyebrow twitched upwards. āDiabolical indeed.ā He picked up a vial and sniffed it. āYouāre missing salamander blood if you truly want prolonged effect.ā
Georgeās mouth fell open slightly. āSalamander blood, sir?ā
Snape swatted Georgeās hand away when the boy tried to retrieve the jar from the supply cupboard. āGently, Weasley, gently. If you add it too quickly, the entire concoction will evaporate, taking your eyebrows with it.ā
He measured out a precise drop of the ruby-red liquid and flicked it into the cauldron, giving it a neat stir. The mixture hissed and glowed a deep emerald. The twins exchanged ecstatic grins.
āProfessor Snape,ā Fred began, with a dramatic bow, āwe are forever in your debt.ā
āDonāt make me regret this,ā Snape muttered, glaring at them. āIf McGonagall catches wind of this, Iāll personally see to it that youāre cleaning cauldrons for the remainder of the year.ā
He turned on his heel and disappeared into the darkness. He certainly did not mutter āIdiotsā under his breathābut he might have formed the word silently.
The next morning, all of Hogwarts buzzed with rumors of how Filchās mops had become suspiciously child-sized overnight. In the staff room, McGonagall eyed Snape over her tea. āSeverus,ā she began, narrowing her gaze. āAny idea who might be behind this āMiniature Mop Mayhemā fiasco?ā
Snape sniffed, feigning supreme disinterest. āI was conducting a thorough inventory of my classroom. Alone. All night.ā His face remained stoic, yet the corners of his mouth twitched, threatening a smile. āIf you doubt me, you can inspect the detention records. I had⦠two students in there as well.ā
McGonagall looked vaguely impressed. āReally? Gryffindors?ā
āMm,ā Snape drawled, noncommittally.
āWhich ones?ā she pressed.
Snapeās eyes flicked to the side. āWeasley twins,ā he answered curtly, straightening his robes with annoyance. āYou know full well I despise those who disrupt my corridors. Why would I lie on their behalf?ā
McGonagall raised her eyebrows. āI⦠see.ā She sipped her tea, looking unconvinced but lacking evidence to the contrary. āWell, I suppose that rules them out.ā
Snape inclined his head stiffly. The faintest flicker of satisfaction gleamed in his dark eyes. Rule them out, indeed.
By lunchtime, the corridors were full of laughter and the rumor mill churned even faster. Someone was whispering about a cunning trap set for Mrs. Norris in the library. Curious. Snape drifted past the Charms corridor and caught a snippet of the twins whispering.
āAh, there you are, Fred, any sign of Mrs. Norris?ā
āNone, George, but we left a nice little cat treat laced with Fizzing Whizzbeesāsheāll be bouncing off the shelves.ā
Snape tutted silently. Honestly, he couldnāt stand that cat any more than they did, but this was borderline⦠comedic. He let them be.
In passing, he deliberately mentioned the new password to Dumbledoreās officeāāSherbet Lemonāāloudly enough for them to hear. They were only half-hidden behind a dusty tapestry, exchanging silent giggles. Surely, theyād have a new scheme by dinner.
If anyone asked, Snape would deny all of it. He would proclaim the Weasley twins a thorn in his side, a nightmare of epic proportions. Yet, in the quiet corners of his mind, he couldnāt help a smug sense of admiration. Their wit, daring, and flair for potions was almost reminiscent of⦠well, no, he didnāt dare finish that thought. They were nothing like him. And he liked themāif one used the word ālikeā so loosely it lost all meaning.
Still, when they boasted to anyone whoād listen that āProfessor Snapeās our favourite teacher,ā and their friends cackled as though it was the biggest joke in Hogwarts history, Severus Snape found himself neither confirming nor denying it. Because, secretly, though heād sooner down a pint of undiluted Bubotuber pus than admit it, the Weasley twins were his favorite too. And that was a secret worth keeping⦠if only for the delightful chaos they brought.
Goes nicely with the other headcanon I posted that Snape is one of the only people capable of distinguishing the twins
has anyone ever before been so comprehensively torn to shreds in their life tho
My favorite part about that line is that it implies that Gilderoy Lockhart was a more competent teacher than Dolores Umbridge. And that may be the biggest insult in the entire series.
Minerva left no fucking survivors with that one.

Long long ago, definitely before The Deathly Hallows was published, there was a fanfic on FictionAlley that I read and I loved. I know FictionAlley no longer exists, but I am hopping the fic was archived. I have lost both computers I read it on and I cannot remember the authorās username. I only have a vague summary and a quote they posted at the end of the chapters.
In the fic Dudley Dursley has a daughter and she is magical. As soon as they realize, they contact Harry to take her. Harry does adopt her but she is a little difficult to trust him. Harry needs to work so he has to put the girl in daycare. Ginny runs the daycare. She is the widow of Neville who died in the war. Harry gets the little girl a stuffed dragon and at the end of every chapter the author asked: Have you hugged your stuffed dragon today.
If you know what I am talking about could you let me know. I will try to reblog this a few times so I can get a wider audience. I donāt need a link. I can search for it on my own, but if you do have a link I wonāt say no to it. If it doesnāt exist anymore that is okay too. I would like to know that too.

George Weasley whose name always came second to someone elseās but who didnāt mind, thatās just the way it worked
George Weasley who followed and perfected and laughed and joked since he was a young boy, but was always more hesitant to do so until Fred laughed first
George Weasley who didnāt like hurting people who didnāt deserve it so he always made sure Fred never took anything too far
George Weasley who liked Percy a lot but sometimes he really got on his nerves so when Fred pulled a prank on Percy, George helped outĀ
George Weasley who loved Quidditch and flying and being on a team and who didnāt mind when his teammates called him Fred by accident because they were so high up in the airĀ
George Weasley laughing at Ron but also apologizing for hurting his feelings more than Fred would
George Weasley bonding with Ginny telling her to come along on trips to the town, but not as much as Fred wouldĀ
George Weasley growing older and starting to realize that he was his own person, but sometimes it was hard to beĀ
George Weasley blushing when girls called him cute because they noticed him without Fred, but thinking they would like Fred better
George Weasley being more submissive and sensitive to things but not showing it because he didnāt want to be weak. Only Fred knew of his sensitivity to some things and he kept that secret
George Weasley losing his ear and laughing because sure he liked being identical and liked switching places with Fred, but he liked being his own person more
George Weasley always used to being second to someone, always following someoneās lead and perfecting their plan, all of sudden being left alone in the world.Ā
George Weasley finally letting his sensitivity show because he liked being individual, but he didnāt like being alone.
Courageous, self-sacrificing people, setting examples for all of us. Everybody loves a hero.
a lot of people, like neville, choose to return to hogwarts for theirĀ āeighth yearā
a lot of them arenāt surprises - hermione, luna, dracoā¦
but what isĀ a surprise is when george weasley peeks his head into nevilleās train carriage and asks if he can sit with them
and, unlike many of the people on the train, he grins and accepts a voucher for a free copy of the quibbler from luna and when he saysĀ ācoolā she looks so happy she might burst
āi thought you left school,ā neville says
āthought iād come back,ā george says, scratching his arm,Ā āfinish learning everything, so my products can be the bestā
thereās something heās not saying, but neville just nods
they share the jelly slugs they get from the trolley, and swap chocolate frog cards because neville has fabian prewett
āi didnāt even know he was on a card,ā george says, raising an eyebrow
the room of requirement shows up to all the eighth years as another common room, for when they need the peace and quiet and time to themselves or time with those who have been through what theyāve been through
neville almost always finds george there, instead of in the common room, and heās surprised, but he doesnāt say anything again, because he knows george is still reeling from being without fred
(the fact heās even come back is a miracle)
but he canāt take that george is always sitting there looking miserable, so after class one day he heads over to george, feeling bold, and asks
āwould you like to come and help me cultivate the dittany?ā
fuck, he thinks suddenly, thatās so stupid, of course he isnāt going to want to do that, he probably thinks itās boring-
but george smiles and nods, getting to his feet
heās surprisingly good with the plants, and he even talks to them, just like neville
between the two of them, they take the dittany cuttings in far less time than neville wouldāve taken alone
āthanks for inviting me out,ā george says, leaning against the greenhouse door as neville pulls off his apron (canāt be too careful).Ā āitās been really hard, and you and luna and hermione have been greatā
neville shrugs:Ā āi just want to helpā
āwell, thank you for itā
nevilleās not expecting it when george tentatively puts his arms up around nevilleās back and leans in close, hugging him gingerly, like heās scared of the contact
heās a little nervous to do this, in case itās wrong, but neville hugs back a little tighter and george melts into him for the briefest of moments
george starts to settle in a little, after; he stops sitting on the sofa on his own staring into space and helps luna out with making posters advertising for quidditch positions for ravenclaw
he even takes up the helm of quidditch commentator, and when neville cheers in the stands with hermione, it almost feels like nothingās happened at all
heās not going to forget the carrows and what they did to hogwarts, not easily, and george is never going to get over being alone in hogwarts, but it feels like - it feels like things arenāt completely awful, like thereās a light far far away at the end of the tunnel, but there, even if itās difficult to reach
thereās a strange and utterly unpredictable mid-october heatwave, and he helps george and luna hand out ice creams to the younger students
george lights up when heās busy, grinning at the first and second years and giving them a reassuring clap on the shoulder when he sends them off with their cute little ice cream cones
neville is struck by how sweet it is, that heās doing his best for them, no matter how he feels on the inside
george is a people person, and always has been
āhey, nev, you want some?ā he asks with a grin
āitās for the younger students,ā neville says stubbornly, but he can tell already that george isnāt giving up on this
ācome onnnn,ā he says, butting his shoulder against neville and giving him a playful look, and neville has to give up with a smile
āonly if youāll have some, tooā
luna takes over, because the rush has died down, so neville and george sit out in one of the courtyards, basking in the peculiar heat (āthe hellās wrong with scottish weather?ā george asks with a fake frown)
āhow are you feeling?ā neville asks, trying not to be awkward
āokay,ā says george.Ā ānot feeling like i want to die, or anything, strangely enoughā
āif you do, iām here, and so is luna, and hermione, and everyone elseā¦ā he nudges george.Ā āmaybe even draco malfoy would be nice to you,ā he says with half a wink, and george giggles
and they spend most of the afternoon out there, even once theyāve finished their ice creams (though george has to finish nevilleās cone), just talking and laughing and reminiscingĀ
they start spending time as a group: neville, george, luna, and hermione, and dean and seamus sometimes join them, but theyāre tight-knit because theyāve been through so much
they can relate to each other
but neville and george start to stick together; neville loves georgeās quirks, and george appreciates that neville wants to help and spend time with him
george helps out around the greenhouse, and neville helps test the products⦠even if that means being turned into a canary again (he didnāt mind so much the first time, really)
they become inseparable
neville worries heās a replacement for fred, but hermione assures him he canāt be, because heās so different and not exactly a bundle of excitement and energy like fred; heās quiet and careful, sits and waters his cacti instead of making big jokes
itās an option in seventh year to help out in the first year classes - not that most people take it, because itās a waste of the time they could be using revising for their dang n.e.w.t.sĀ - but neville has a go, and george waits for him to walk to their next period class, grinningĀ
ānext thing we know, youāre gonna be called professor longbottom,ā he says
āyou think?ā neville scratches his chin, thoughtfully.Ā āthatād be niceā
āyouād be great,ā george assures him
itās not a surprise that they get together - the only surprise is that it took them so long, but with feelings all tangled up like vines, maybe itās understandable (but not to the younger gryffindors, anyway, who have been keeping a betting pool)
itās in mid-december, and theyāre sitting out in the rain in puffy jackets testing out georgeās magical umbrella that creates more of a bubble than an umbrella, keeping the rain off completely, with no having to dump the umbrella in the bath later
neville has a flask heās borrowed from dean, with hot chocolate and marshmallows and heās about to share it with george when he suddenly realises how close they are and how much he wants everything for george
and wants everything about george
he just wants to be close to george, to hug him, to kiss him better
he leans in and touches his lips to george, a little uncertain just like their first hug, and george puts a hand round the back of his neck, pulling him closer
neville can feel the smile against him
they donāt say anything about it afterwards because thereās nothing they need to say to each other that they donāt know, so he takes a sip of hot chocolate
(and they kiss again because theyāve spent this long notĀ kissing; they might as well start making use of their time)
āhow are you feeling?ā neville asks, just before they go back inside
āa lot like i donāt want to die,ā george says, squeezing his hand,Ā āācause i think iāve got something to live forā
