Why you should watch The Witcher.
(a completely biased TV rec by me)
It is based on a series of novels and video games, though I have neither read or played them so I cannot judge how faithful an adaptation this is. I can only say that the show by itself is awesome.
Also itâs already been renewed for a second season by Netflix.
But back to why itâs totally worth watching.
First of all. Yennefer of Vengerberg.
She is a mage. She is a badass. Sheâs had a very hard past and sheâs sacrificed a great deal to get to where she is. You will see her kick ass, kill people, do magic. But you will also see her be vulnerable and kind (sometimes) and sad. She is the unstoppable force of this series, I know you might think that would go to the Witcher in the show called The Witcher but believe me itâs Yennefer. She does not stop, she never stops, even if it might be good for her, because only she herself decides whatâs good for her and what she wants above all else is to have choices.
The next (and related) reason you should watch this show is Yenâs relationship with Tissaia de Vries, the Rectoress of Aretuza (basically Hogwarts only more shady and more kidnappy).
You will think you know who Tissaia is gonna be and believe me you donât.Â
They introduce an âevil sorceressâ and then you see her smile at Yen and goddamn sheâs actually a mama bear to her girls.
The next reason is Cirilla of Cintra.
She is a princess. Or she was, right up until her entire kingdom got slaughtered and her grandmother sent her off to find Geralt of Rivia.
She is innocent, she is not very experienced. She is the Lion Cub of Cintra. She is also absolutely savage.
And all she wants is to be safe. And every second person she meets wants to adopt her.
Sheâs also the future daughter of Geralt (and Yennefer, I cannot begin to tell you how much Iâm looking forward to that).
Then thereâs the Witcher himself. His name is Geralt of Rivia. Is he a badass? Yes. Do people say that âhis kindâ donât have emotions? Also yes⊠but theyâre morons. Because you know what else he is? A mushy marshmallow with absolutely terrible luck. Like, the worst.
Canât even fall in love like a normal person. Has to make it complicated and all angsty by SPOILER spoiler SPOILER. Itâs amazing. And donât me even get me started on how he acquires his future daughter. Itâs spoiler SPOILER the most amazing thing you will ever see.
He loves his horse, who he has named Roach because why not (if anything ever happens to that horse I wonât have to kill anyone, Geralt will do it for me).Â
And then thereâs Jaskier the Bard. Heâs going to be responsible for getting a song stuck in your head for a chunk of the foreseeable future.Â
Heâs also Geraltâs best friend and advertisement consultant. This happened by sheer persistence and because like I mentioned Geralt is a grumpy marshmallow.
â-
Finally if this has convinced you all you need to know before you begin is that the show takes place in three different timelines that slowly catch up with the present.
Ciriâs POV is the present.
Yenneferâs POV starts out like fourty-five-ish to fifty-ish years before that.
And Geraltâs POV starts out eighteen-ish to twenty-ish years before the present.
It sounds complicated but honestly itâs not that hard to get the gist of it and the specific times arenât actually all that important anyway.
How come I watched this show for Geralt and Yennefer but I stayed for Geralt and Jaskier?
Geralt: There are no snacks left in the kitchen.
Yennefer: Iâm literally right here.
# i watch the witcher on netflix for the plot
"Toss a coin to yo , Wiiiiiiiiicherrrrrrrrđ”"
What makes Geralt appealing for me other than the fact that heâs super relatable as a grumpy introvert whoâs 100% Done With Everyoneâs Shit is that he doesnât want to be a hero, he really wants to live up to the stereotype about witchers being heartless and incapable of human emotion and he wants to believe he only does good deeds for money but nah, he has feelings and morals and he canât help being a hero anyway even though it obviously annoys the fuck out of him

âThe white wolf and the doeâ - Geralt of Rivia x reader
âBurn the witch!â the townsfolk yelled with fury âIn the name of the Eternal fire, burn her!â Geralt made his way through the large crowd towards the pyre in the middle of the square of Novigrad. âThereâs no place for your kind here, witch!â In the middle of the pyre, on a long stake was tied a girl with H/L H/C hair, a F/C dress and a furious expression on her face. She had narrowed her eyes, pursed lips, which she probably had bitten the inside of, otherwise she would be snarling at the crowd as it seems. She looked like a wounded animal, trying its best to scare off the predators that had surrounded it to make the final blow to strike it down.
Geralt normally wouldnât care who was burning who unless there was something in it for him, but seeing this girl burn like a coal for the entertainment of a crowd of ungrateful racists almost seemed like a sin to him. Maybe because she was beautifulâŠmaybe because she was a witchâŠmaybe both made him want to save her. He walked over to the red robed man, holding the torch to light the pyre, who was giving a speech on how evil magic was and how it must be purged from the world âHey, you.â he called out. The other man looked at him âListen, burning a witch wonât do anything than getting a curse on yourself.â Geralt explained, sounding as convincing as possible, because of course, he was making up whatever came to mind. The priest blinked, sinking in his words and for a moment looked split between continuing the deed and letting her go. Apparently he got frightened by Geraltâs words. He shook his head, trying to look as hopeful as he can âThe eternal fire will protect me from curses.â he shot out quickly, but it sounded like he didnât believe it himself. âWanna bet? Why donât you leave it to the professionals?â Geralt offered âHow about I take the girl and kill her instead? That way you wonât get cursed and your fire will have one person less to worry about.âÂ
The crowd went silent. The priest looked like he was considering the offer. âYou are a witch hunter?â he asked Geralt. âAhâŠyes. You can say.â This guy canât be seriousâŠHas he even read a book before in his life?! Or maybe he grew up in a flower pot, while his parents were keeping him oblivious to everything around him. He was just about to buy it, when a woman from the crowd suddenly yelled âDonât listen to him! Heâs a witcher! Heâs on her side and wants to save her!â Geralt looked at the woman, then at the girl, tied to the steak. She was watching him curiously with her big E/C doe eyes, awaiting his next move. Geralt sighed out heavily âWhy do I even botherâŠâ he murmured and with a wave of his hand, casted the Axii sign and again asked âYou will let her go, wonât you?â The man blinked at him stupidly and answered in a calm tone âSure, I will. How silly of me to engage in such dangerous thingsâŠâ and with a tottering step he walked over to the pyre, followed by the angry roar of the disappointed crowd.Â
The girl was free and pushed herself off the steak, rubbing her sore wrists. She sighed out, relieved and stretched, but was cut off by Geralt who grabbed her by the hand and started leading her away quickly from the angry crowd, which never stopped booing them and someone even threw an egg in their direction. Nobody dared get in their way, though.Â
âWait!â the girl panted out, exhausted and tried to pull her hand away from his âUghâŠStop!â Geralt pulled her in a secluded alley and let her go. âWho are you? Why did you save me? I didnât need your help!â she snapped at him. âWell, apparently you did, because you looked like a doe, cornered by hunters.â Geralt scoffed mockingly. âThe situation was under control.â she hissed at him angrily with narrowed eyes. âSee?â she pointed her chin at the nearby torch, which hung from a wall. With the flick of her hand, the fire was out and the torch looked like it was never lit âI would have extinguished the fire and returned it to the crowd of idiots three times more than it was.â. Geralt raised an eyebrow in her direction. âIâd love to see you do that with your hands behind your back.â She groaned and opened her mouth to say something back at him, but no words came out and she closed it again. âYou will want something in return no doubt. Even though nobody asked you to help me.â she murmured in a grumpy tone. âI know how you witchers proceed. So what will it be? Gold?â Geralt shook his head âYour name will be enough.â That caught her offguard and she stared at him, amazed. âI-Itâs Y/NâŠâ She stuttered out âAnd I know you as well. Geralt of Rivia, was it?â she asked and he nodded yes. âNovigrad isnât safe for you anymore. Not that I would mind saving you again, but that would be an inconvenience for the both of us and my advice is you leave here at once.â Geralt told her seriously. âAndâŠwhere will I go?â she whispered âIâŠI donât have anywhere else to beâŠâÂ
A moment of silence stepped in between them. âWe will think of something.â Geralt finally said âI wonât leave things the way they are and if you trust me, I can keep you safe.â Y/N stared at him, wide eyed âButâŠâ she started, but didnât know how to continue. âWill you stay or will you go?â he asked again. âAlrightâŠIâll come with youâŠI donât want anything to do with this city anymoreâŠâ
