This post covers everything from how switching works, how much it will cost, and the best strategy. Luckily for us in Georgia, our natural gas market is deregulated. So we’re free to choose the natural gas provider that works best for us. And those providers have to compete for your business. So, let’s answer your questions about how to switch my natural gas provider now.

Switching Natural Gas Providers: The Process

In Georgia, with our natural gas deregulated market, we can choose from any certified marketer. All you have to do is shop for a new natural gas plan and sign up online. You’ll pay your new supplier for the natural gas you use and the cost to deliver the gas. The pipelines that deliver your gas stay the same and are still maintained and serviced by the utility, Atlanta Gas Light.

Typically when you make the switch, it can take some time. If you request to switch before the 18th or 19th of the month, the change will be effective by the first day of the next month. For example, if you switch before March 19, then your plan will change on April 1. According to the GA PSC, for this to happen, AGL must process these switches by 3 AM on the 20th day of the month.

However, if you switch after the 19th of the month, your switch request won’t go through until the first day of the next following month. In this case, if you decide to switch providers on March 20, your switch won’t go through until May 1.

Keep in mind that as the customer, you have the right of rescission. You change your mind about your new natural gas supplier. After enrollment information arrives from your provider, you have three days to cancel the switch without any penalties.

Finally, your ability and freedom to switch is 100% up to you. The utility doesn’t verify or approve your choice of a new natural gas supplier. But you do have to choose from the certified marketers that work with your utility.

The Cost to Switch Natural Gas Providers

You are free to switch your natural gas supplier at any time. But, there can be some costs involved.

Firstly, if you already have a contract for a fixed-rate natural gas plan, there is often an early termination fee. This fee varies depending on the provider, but can range from $50-$200. Make sure you check the details of your contract before you switch.

Secondly, Atlanta Gas Light can charge an extra $7.50 fee if you switch natural gas suppliers more than once in 12 months.

Rebate amounts are based on the annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE). That is, how efficiently the furnace makes heat. Upgrading to a natural gas furnace with 92% AFUE or higher gets a $300 rebate. Or you can go for max efficiency, or 95% AFUE or higher, for a $400 rebate.

You can also update your natural gas water heater with a model that is rated .82 uniform energy factor (UEF) or higher and get a $200 rebate.

Save More with New Natural Gas Plan

Your new high efficiency furnace is definitely going to drop your natural gas costs. Just think about it. A standard furnace today is about 80% efficient. So, if you go with a 95% efficiency upgrade, that is 15% more efficient at least! Additionally, older systems lose efficiency over the years. Variable rates are typically much higher than fixed rates and change monthly. However, the lower your natural gas use is, the less that higher rate affects you. Plus, if you ride out the summer on a variable rate plan, you may snag a really cheap natural gas rate in the fall shoulder months. So, should you choose a fixed rate plan or a month-to-month for summer? Let’s find out.

Comparing Summer Costs for Fixed and Month-to-Month Plans

Looking at numbers from the GA PSC in 2025, we have a good idea what the average customer might see on their summer natural gas bill.

First of all, the PSC estimates an average therm usage per month in the summer of 23 therms. But some people will use a lot less than this if they don’t have large natural gas appliances. So, for low-use customer, we used an estimate of about 11.5 therms per month in summer. Based on rates from last year, the breakdown of total summer costs for fixed and variable month-to-month rates and for low and high use customers looks like this:

Now, last year’s rates were around 10¢ higher than many of our current natural gas supplier rates that you can lock in today. Plus, the price differences above only amount to a few dollars per month. Still, in any case, the month-to-month rate won’t most likely save you anything outright this summer. But… there’s actually more to consider.

What You Need to Know Before You Choose

Firstly, if you’re a low-use consumer in the summer, the variable rate might only cost you about $30 extra for the whole summer. So, depending on where natural gas prices go this summer, it might be worth it.

With this in mind, the EIA has lowered its projections for natural gas wholesale costs going into the rest of this year and next year. That means our natural gas rates could drop, too. Especially in low-demand shoulder months in the fall.

On the other hand, weather predictions indicate that we’re in for a long, hot summer. That doesn’t exactly bode well for cheap natural gas. Georgians rely on gas-fired generators to make electricity for cooling during hot spells.

If you’re a low-use month-to-month rate customer, it may be a good idea to hold out for a few months, you might see a rate drop in the fall. Now combine that with higher demand for exports from Elba Island. Elba isn’t one of the top export sites in the U.S. However, it was recently approved for a 22% increase in exports by the DOE. This increase puts added pressure on pipelines, but it’s difficult to say how that might hit residential natural gas plans.

The good news is, other elements, like production and storage numbers, look good for cheap natural gas rates. In fact, the EIA dropped their national average wholesale price projection for the rest of the year. Natural gas suppliers may still raise rates if transportation charges go up in response to congestion. High demand periods, like peak cooling and heating season will also compound this issue.

We put together the puzzle pieces of how the Iran conflict is affecting natural gas rates in Georgia and how to shop the best plans.

A deal has yet to be sealed between the US and Iran to wrap up the conflict and the Strait of Hormuz closing. In the US, we have already seen the impacts at the pump. But, looking ahead, how will this all affect natural gas rates? With 20% of the global supply going through the strait, local natural gas rates in Georgia may eventually get hit. But how will the Iran conflict affect natural gas rates in GA? Let’s look at the factors and find out.

Iran Conflict Prompts More Gas Exports

In the US, we don’t import much natural gas at all. That means the Strait of Hormuz closure doesn’t affect our supply too much directly. Currently, wholesale natural gas spot prices have dropped steadily this month. After a warmer than average winter and early spring, demand has been low. This pushes U.S. storage amounts higher and prices go lower.

However, gas supply to many countries in Europe has been cut off due to the conflict with Iran. Recently, the U.S. has increased natural gas exports to these countries to help stabilize their supply. As a result, this has begun affecting natural gas storage and rates in Georgia, all the way down to local natural gas suppliers.

Specifically, Elba Island LNG export terminal got the green light to increase exports by 22%. This facility is near Savannah, Georgia and exports from gas fields in Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi. In Georgia, we get most of our natural gas through pipelines from Alabama. But because there’s only so much pipeline space for this gas, diverting more of it to Elba for export could make shopping cheap natural gas plans harder.

Predictions for this summer will be hot in Georgia. In fact, this looks like it’s the case for the whole south. Although we don’t use much natural gas in our homes during the summer, most of our electricity comes from natural gas. So, that means demand for natural gas will be high throughout the summer just from domestic use as well.

Due to the conflict this spring, we didn’t see lower shoulder month rates. With higher storage and dropping spot prices, that could change in May. But things are still unpredictable with the Strait of Hormuz and forecasts of a hot summer. Still, we expect summer rates may likely be a bit higher than average. Furthermore, fall rates may not be likely to drop much, either. But anything can happen.

Much of the US enjoyed a warmer than average February and March. The warmer weather may send some positive vibes to your wallet in the form of cheaper natural gas plans in April. In fact, the EIA recently slashed price forecasts due to higher supply and lower demand due to warmer weather. Despite the blockade at the Strait of Hormuz, the US is relatively insulated from volatile natural gas prices because we don’t import much. So, we are predicting (fingers crossed) price drops next month! Here are the 12 month plans to watch for the best rates in April.

Natural Gas Plans to Watch for April Drop

To make predictions on which natural gas plans are most likely to drop in April, we looked at several factors. Specifically, we looked at what these natural gas providers did with their prices from March to April in 2024 and 2025. We also took into account whether prices went up or down for the provider already this March.

Based on that information, our best guess is that Constellation is the most likely to drop prices in April. Following the top spot, it’s Georgia Natural Gas®, Xoom Energy, and Gas South. Scana Energy doesn’t make the top 4 likely to drop prices. However, it’s worth noting that this month Scana Energy already has the cheapest rate for 12 month fixed plans.

What These Natural Gas Providers Offer

Let’s take a look at the details of the plans we predict are most likely to drop their rates next month.

Firstly, it’s the Constellation 12 Month Home Natural Gas plan at $0.669 per therm. There is a $6.95 monthly charge and $150 ETF.

Secondly we have the Georgia Natural Gas® 12 Month Fixed plan at $0.749 per therm. There is a $7.99-$8.99 monthly charge. Also, the ETF is $100 the first half of the term and $50 the second half. You also get a 5¢ discount for 12 months with Greener Life for free. Finally, the provider will pay your ETF to switch from another fixed rate contract.

Next up is the Xoom Energy SureLock12 plan at $0.719 per therm. There is a $5.85 monthly charge and $100 ETF.

Following US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February, 28th 2026, Iran retaliated. Among Iran’s initial targets were oil and gas refineries in the region and effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz. These moves stand to have a massive impact on energy prices globally. But how will the Iran conflict impact natural gas prices in Georgia? Let’s get into the details now.

What Iran is Targeting and Why It Matters

The big play in the game so far is definitely the Strait of Hormuz. Shutting down the strait cuts off about 20% of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) and crude oil exports.

But when it comes to natural gas, the US is a big producer. For Georgia, most of our natural gas comes straight from domestic gas fields which keeps GA gas prices low. So, we may not be directly affected as much or as quickly as areas like Asia and Europe.

Iran has also directly targeted its neighbors, like Qatar’s natural gas facilities. Qatar supplies about 20% of global LNG. Due to attacks, Qatar may shut down gas production for a month or more. Even though we don’t get natural gas from Qatar, this still puts a major squeeze on global supply and demand.

And of course, crude oil prices going up pushes up LNG, too. Iran is targeting crude oil infrastructure and the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, US and Israeli strikes are going for Iran’s oil production.

Outlook for Iran Conflict Effect on Natural Gas

Remember that natural gas is a global commodity; so price changes ripple everywhere. Since the beginning of the conflict, Henry Hub spot prices have jumped from $2.86 to $3.16 per MMBtu (as of March 11). But there has been a lot of up and down with these numbers day to day so far. On the other hand, Europe’s benchmark, Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF), rose 76% in a week.

Goldman Sachs recently released projections on the TTF natural gas benchmark if the strait remains closed for one or two months. In one month, we could be looking at prices more than doubling. After two months, we are easily looking at TTF prices more than tripling. This could push US prices higher, albeit to it a limited amount.

Furthermore, keep in mind that storage numbers will sink below averages during the strait shutdown. When things open back up, there will be a rush to refill storage. This will continue to keep global demand high and also affect natural gas companies in Georgia.

Based on marketer filed gas rates from Georgia PSC, many suppliers upped rates for 12 month fixed rate gas plans this month. These hikes come despite rising temperatures and approaching the spring shoulder period of lower demand for natural gas for heating.
